Chapter 878: Chapter 436: Unable to Extricate Oneself (Second Update)

"Sir, my phone’s dead. Can I borrow your phone to call my dad?"

A bright, crisp voice sounded behind Kenneth Osborne, speaking Mandarin as well.

Kenneth ignored it.

He was never the warm-hearted, gallant type.

Besides, with his Bluetooth earpiece in, he could pretend he hadn’t heard.

Until that person refused to give up and reached out to tug his arm.

Kenneth couldn’t keep pretending he hadn’t heard, so he had to turn his head and glance back.

It was a young woman with honey-colored skin, long narrow brows and eyes, a straight high nose, but very full lips, and when she smiled she showed a mouthful of big white teeth.

She was the typical-looking overseas Chinese girl raised abroad.

Kenneth’s expression didn’t change as he said with a slight smile, "We’re about to land. You can make a call at the airport."

"...But I didn’t bring any money..." The girl had only caught a distant glimpse of Kenneth’s profile in the cabin before; now that she was seeing his face up close from the front, the light in her eyes obviously grew brighter.

"Sir, please, I’m begging you! It won’t be any trouble! How about this: I’ll tell you the number, you dial it for me, and when it connects you put it on speaker so I can talk to my dad directly. I won’t touch your phone, okay?" Even though she was pleading, there was laughter rippling in her eyes.

For modern people, a phone has almost become a second identity, lining up with a toothbrush, car, and wife as things you don’t lend out—maybe even less lendable than a car.

The people around them turned to look, curious.

Kenneth had no choice but to say, "...Number."

The girl lit up with delight and quickly recited a phone number.

Kenneth dialed it.

No one picked up on the other end.

He was just about to hang up when the call suddenly connected.

"Hello? Who’s this?" It was a middle-aged man’s voice; his English was not quite standard, but very fluent.

Kenneth turned on speaker and held the phone out in front of the girl.

The girl hurriedly said, "Daddy, it’s me! It’s Caitlin, I’m back! The plane’s already landed, are you coming to pick me up?"

"Caitlin? Why did your phone number change?"

"My phone’s dead, I’m using... some nice guy’s phone."

"Got it. I’m on my way. I’ll wait for you at Exit Three."

Once he heard it was someone else’s phone, he said a few more casual words and then hung up.

Kenneth put his phone away, and the girl called Caitlin started chatting him up.

"What’s your last name, sir?"

"Osborne."

"So you’re Mr. Osborne. Are you here in New York for sightseeing or on a business trip? People in business class are usually on business. Which company are you an executive at?"

"...I’m here... as a tourist." There was no need for strangers to share too much. Kenneth didn’t want to keep talking, and raised his wrist to check his watch.

When a man does that, it usually means the conversation is over and you can get lost now.

But this girl seemed not to understand what that gesture meant, and went on curiously, "Tourist? That’s great! I grew up here, I know every street like the back of my hand! Mr. Osborne, I can be your tour guide! A free tour guide, no charge!"

Kenneth declined. "No need. GPS is very convenient now; I can just drive myself around."

"Hahahahaha! Mr. Osborne, you’re so funny! ’Drive yourself around’! Hahahahaha!" Her laugh point seemed really low; his comment had her doubled over with laughter.

Kenneth had been used to being hit on since he was a kid; it didn’t stir any particular feeling in him. He didn’t dislike it, but he didn’t enjoy it either; he just treated it as if it wasn’t happening.

But the way this girl laughed so heartily reminded him a lot of Lawrence Winters. Of course, her smile wasn’t as pretty as Lawrence’s.

When Lawrence wasn’t causing trouble, she was practically an angel. He’d wanted nothing more than to hold her in his arms every night and cherish her gently...

It was only after his thoughts had run their course that Kenneth realized what he had just been thinking.

They were already divorced. Wasn’t it nice enough to just treat her like a friend?

What was he thinking?

Annoyed with himself, he shifted his gaze away and tightened his grip on his suitcase handle.

The girl, however, didn’t care about his attitude at all. She carried on in a totally chummy tone, "There’s actually not that much fun stuff in New York. If you want to shop, go to Fifth Avenue—that’s where all the designer stores are. If you like a cultural vibe, you can go to the Metropolitan Museum. I really love it there; I can spend an entire day by myself inside."

"There’s also the Statue of Liberty, that little island. You can go for a visit; it counts as a sight, I guess."

"And of course, don’t forget our historic Chinatown. Every Chinese person who comes to New York goes to see it."

The girl chattered on and on with her introductions. When Kenneth heard "Chinatown," he couldn’t help giving her a look. "You’re very familiar with Chinatown too?"
