Adeline’s pov~

"A transfer, huh? Well, this place is a maze, pretty girl," Blake said, shifting his weight smoothly. Once again, he extended his hand toward me, offering his guidance with effortless charm. "So, do you want me to help you look around the campus?"

"Thank you, but I’m fine," I replied instantly. My tone was polite but completely flat.

Blake let out a low, amused chuckle. The sound rumbled in his chest, vibrating through the small space left between us. I guess he wasn’t used to being shut down so easily, and instead of walking away, my rejection only seemed to make him more interested. He took another half-step forward. His massive frame completely blocked my path, trapping me.

Then, his scent hit me. It was a suffocating wave of rich ozone and gathering storms.

Get away from me, my mind screamed, the old, panicked kitchen maid inside me clawing to get out. Don’t look at him. Don’t let him smell the fear.

"You know, the Royal Lycan Academy isn’t like other schools," Blake teased. But his voice dropped, losing some of its playfulness, turning into a low, rumbling warning that vibrated straight into my bones. "It’s not exactly safe for a pretty little thing to wander around alone. Someone needs to take care of a new transfer. Are you sure you want to decline my offer?"

"I’m sure," I said.

I forced my voice to stay deadpan, pulling every ounce of coldness I possessed to the surface. I finally forced myself to look him directly in the eyes. "No, thank you. There is already someone I know here. I’m actually just searching for him right now."

Blake’s eyebrows shot up. A dangerous, competitive glint flashed in his eyes, cutting through his easygoing smirk. The mere thought of another guy having any kind of claim or connection to the mysterious new girl instantly poked at his Lycan pride. Behind him, his followers shifted closer, their casual posture vanishing as they paid very close attention to my every breath.

"Oh? Him?" Blake asked. His voice was laced with pure amusement, but beneath it lived a subtle, challenging growl. "And who exactly is this guy?"

"It’s Raven," I said clearly.

The moment the name left my lips, it was as if the wind itself stopped blowing. The entire bustling courtyard seemed to fall into a dead, suffocating silence.

The teasing smirk completely vanished from Blake’s chiselled face. The easygoing playboy attitude evaporated in a single second, replaced by a sharp, stunned tension that turned his body into granite. Behind him, his followers visibly gasped, exchanging wide-eyed looks of utter disbelief.

"Raven?" Blake asked. All the warmth was gone from his voice now. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, scanning my face for a lie. "You’re looking for Raven?"

"Yes," I replied. I kept my breathing even, refusing to let the heavy, suffocating pressure that had just settled over the courtyard crush me.

Blake stared at me for a long, agonisingly silent second. Then, a slow, completely different kind of smile spread across his face. This one wasn’t charming; it was sharp, knowing, and laced with an intense, predatory curiosity. He crossed his massive arms over his chest, looking me up and down like I was a puzzle he was desperate to tear apart.

"Raven," Blake murmured, his voice rich with a dark kind of amusement. "Well, that’s interesting. He is my best friend. My brother, basically. But he never mentioned he had a sister..."

"No," I interrupted immediately. My heart did a violent flip in my chest, and my eyes widened slightly as I took half a step back. No, no. Don’t let them think that. "He is not my brother."

"Then what exactly is he to—"

"Adeline."

A cold, commanding voice cut through the air like a blade, shattering Blake’s sentence into pieces.

I turned my head sharply toward the sound, my entire body relaxing for the first time since I crossed the gates. Walking down the grand marble steps of the Student Council Tower, his eyes locked entirely on me, was Raven.

Raven walked with a heavy, unhurried grace, each step exuding the quiet authority of someone who didn’t need to shout to be feared. As the Lord Protector, he was the guardian of the academy’s ancient boundaries, its secrets, and its students. His dark hair was neatly cut, and his uniform was immaculate, lacking the casual disarray of Blake’s.

The crowd of students parted instantly, bowing their heads as he passed.

"Raven," Blake said, his smirk returning, though it was sharper now, testing the waters. He didn’t step back from me, but his posture shifted from flirting to a subtle, defensive stance. "You’re late for the council briefing. And it seems you left something behind. Or rather, someone."

Raven didn’t answer Blake immediately. His dark eyes swept over me first, noting my tightly clenched hands hidden inside my sweatshirt pockets and the rigid tension in my shoulders. For a fraction of a second, something dark and deeply protective flashed across his stoic features before his face returned to a mask of absolute stone.

"She is with me," Raven said simply. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a weight that brooked no argument. He stopped just a foot away, his physical presence easily matching Blake’s massive frame.

"With you?" Blake repeated, his voice rich with curiosity. He leaned back slightly, crossing his arms. "That’s a vague answer, bro. She says she’s a new transfer, she’s wearing no house colors, and she doesn’t exactly look like the usual elite nobility we admit here. Care to enlighten the rest of us?"

I held my breath, my mind screaming at me to run, but my legs felt glued to the stone floor. If Raven gave away even a hint of my true identity, Blake would dissect it in seconds.

"Her family has performed an invaluable service to my kingdom," Raven stated, his tone flat and official. "By royal decree of the House of Dravenmoor, her safety and her education here are my personal responsibility. Her status is protected under my name. Is that clear enough for you, Lord Regent?"

Using Blake’s official title—Lord Regent—was a subtle but powerful warning. It was Raven drawing a line in the sand, reminding his best friend that this was official business, not a game.

Blake’s eyes narrowed slightly, the playful glint completely disappearing for a brief moment as he weighed Raven’s words. He looked back at me, his gaze lingering on me for a moment.

"Protected by the Lord Protector himself," Blake murmured, a slow, dangerous smile returning to his lips. "Well, then. I suppose that makes her very special. Welcome to the academy, Adeline. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot of each other."

With a final, lingering look that promised this conversation was far from over, Blake turned on his heel and walked away, his followers quickly falling into step behind him.

The suffocating pressure in the courtyard eased slightly as the crowd began to disperse, whispering fiercely among themselves.

I finally let out the breath I had been holding, my shoulders slumping. I looked up at Raven, the Lycan prince who held my life in his hands.

"Thank you," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

Raven looked down at me, his expression unreadable, but his dark eyes held a deep, heavy gravity. "Don’t thank me yet, Adeline," he said softly, his voice for my ears alone. "This is the most dangerous place on earth for someone like you. Come. We need to get you out of the open."
