Adeline’s pov~

"And by the way... stay away from Blake, Keiran, and Zyran."

"Include your name on that list too!" I spat, my chest heaving as I crossed my arms defensively over my chest. "I don’t want your pity, I don’t want your blood, and I damn sure don’t want your protection anymore, Raven!"

Raven didn’t yell. He took a slow, heavy step into my personal space, his towering frame cutting off the cold night wind.

"Let’s go get you something to eat," he repeated, his gravelly voice dropping into a low, quiet register. "You haven’t eaten anything since morning."

My breath hitched in my throat. How did he know that? How could he possibly know I hadn’t touched a single plate of food today?

I forced my chin up, hiding the sudden spike of panic beneath a cold wall of anger. "No. I don’t want anything from you."

Raven stared down at me for three agonising seconds, his expression unyielding.

"Are you walking," he rasped, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, dark light, "or should I carry you?"

A wave of humiliation and anger flushed through my cheeks.

"No, I am fine," I replied coldly, glaring at him with pure venom.

"Then walk," he commanded.

Raven reached out, his large, calloused hand wrapping around mine. He didn’t crush my fingers or bruise my skin; his grip was almost surprisingly soft, yet completely unyielding, and he started walking toward the main academy building.

"Let go of my hand!" I hissed, tugging against his hold as I tried to keep pace with his long strides. "I said I will walk! I am not running anywhere!"

He ignored my protest completely, his long fingers remaining firmly locked around mine as he led me down the winding stone corridors toward the central dining hall.

The anger boiled inside me, but it had nothing to do with Raven. But this isn’t taking me anywhere good. I just want to stay away from him, from everyone.

We stepped through the massive wrought-iron doors into the cafeteria—or whatever the highborns wanted to call it.

In reality, it was less like a student mess hall and more like a massive, royal luxury restaurant hidden inside the Royal Lycan Academy, complete with vaulted ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and polished marble floors.

I avoided coming here when Sierra asked me to join her for lunch because I wanted a low profile, not to be the centre of attention.

The moment the heavy doors swung open, the ambient noise in the grand hall died instantly.

Every single head turned in our direction. Highborn, noble alphas, and elite students froze mid-conversation. But they weren’t looking at my face, and they weren’t looking at Raven’s lethal expression.

All eyes were locked onto our hands—specifically, where the Prince of the Second Throne had his thick, calloused fingers wrapped firmly around the wrist of a scentless, wolfless nobody.

A sudden, suffocating wave of embarrassment and terror washed over me. Gasps and furious whispers began to ripple through the tables like wildfire. Panicking at the public scrutiny, I violently tried to shake my hand free from his grip.

Raven didn’t let go. He simply tightened his grip, his iron fingers securing me in place without breaking his stride. He didn’t even bother looking at the staring crowd; his dark eyes flicked down to me, cold and absolute.

"Stop struggling," Raven warned softly, his deep voice carrying a dark, dangerous promise that sent an involuntary shiver straight down my spine.

I stopped pulling against his iron grip, not because I was obeying him, but because the sheer weight of a hundred highborn eyes burning into my skin made my throat close up.

Whispers tore through the grand hall like a swarm of hornets. Noble girls in tailored academy blazers lowered their crystal glasses, their eyes wide with disbelief and raw, poisonous envy.

Male alphas from the upper houses leaned forward in their leather booths, their dark gazes darting from Raven’s lethal face down to his calloused fingers locked around my bare wrist.

Look at her... isn’t that the wolfless outcast? Why is Lord Raven holding her? Did The Prince of Second Throne just bring a rogue into the Royal Hall?

I kept my head down, the shadow of my hoodie hiding the furious, hot flush creeping up my neck. I felt like a parade exhibit—a weak, scentless anomaly being dragged by one of the most dangerous, royal lycan princes in the territory.

Raven didn’t care. He didn’t look at a single person in the hall. He strode right past the central tables as if the noble elite surrounding us were nothing more than dust on the marble floorboards.

He pulled me toward a secluded, high-backed booth tucked into the dark corner of the hall, near the massive glass windows overlooking the courtyard.

Without asking, he pushed me gently into the soft velvet seat, his towering shadow blocking any exit. Before I could slide out the other side, he sat down directly opposite me, his broad shoulders easily devouring the space.

"Stay," Raven commanded quietly, his gravelly voice cutting through the distant chatter of the room.

"I am not a dog, Raven," I spat in a harsh whisper, my voice trembling with suppressed rage as I pulled my wrist back onto my lap.

The skin where he had held me was red, warm, and tingling with the lingering static of his alpha magic. "You dragged me into the middle of the Royal Hall! This is not protection, this is a way of creating new death threats to me. Do you have any idea what these people are going to do to me the second you turn your back?!"

Raven leaned back into the dark leather booth, resting one arm casually over the backrest. His pitch-black eyes fixed onto mine with a heavy, suffocating intensity that made the air in my lungs feel thin.

"They won’t touch you," he said, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that carried an unshakeable certainty. "Not unless they want the Second Throne to wipe their bloodlines off the map."

A bitter, humourless scoff escaped my throat. "You can’t protect me twenty-four seven! I have classes! I have dorms! You’re just making me the bigger target in this academy! Do you want me to get killed? Because from where I am seeing right now, it does feel like it."
