By the time Feng Yuan and the others arrived, the reinforcements had already reached and were engaging with those strange "people."
"Is this... a Shadow Puppet? No, it doesn’t seem to be that thing. It’s strange, what exactly is this? It looks like a Puppet, yet it has real life."
Looking at those strangely dressed people, Feng Yuan said with astonishment, as Qi Chen and Dou Yanlan stood behind him. Although they didn’t think they could affect the battle, they still directed Ah Mu and the others to prepare for combat.
"No matter what they are, they’re in trouble."
Veronia glanced at Feng Yuan and remarked irritably. Although Captain Yan and the others had arrived before Feng Yuan, sadly, after continuous fighting, they were reaching their limits.
After all, these things were too unreasonable, impossible to completely eradicate. Every time they barely managed to kill them, they somehow recovered instantly.
"Can you trap this thing? I’ll think of a way to completely get rid of these strange creatures."
Feng Yuan said to Veronia while pondering. He wasn’t speaking nonsense; these creatures were too peculiar, leaving Feng Yuan uncertain about how to solve this. Logically, such undying entities shouldn’t exist in the Main World. Even if the Imperial Timeline had some means, creating such a thing was indeed bizarre.
The best option for now is probably to temporarily trap them, which wouldn’t be too difficult for Veronia. The disparity in strength was obvious, and those guys shouldn’t be able to trouble even Veronia. If that were the case, it wouldn’t be a simple matter.
"Strange attire, strangely familiar in a way."
Dou Yanlan murmured in confusion. Veronia didn’t notice Dou Yanlan’s whisper and promptly used the Space of Mirror to trap the group of oddly dressed "humans."
Those "people" disappeared as if erased from the world, startling Captain Yan and the others. Fortunately, Veronia explained in time to prevent a misunderstanding.
"Those clothes..."
Not only Dou Yanlan, but even Qi Chen also felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity. Unlike Veronia, Feng Yuan noticed their words, turned his head suspiciously to them, and asked,
"Do you recognize these things?"
"No, it’s just that those clothes seem familiar, as if I’ve seen them before. No, I remember now! The patterns seem similar to those at the Maomu Temple Fair, just not exactly the same, which is why I didn’t recognize them at first."
Qi Chen clapped his hands as he realized it. He thought those clothes looked so familiar; upon closer examination, the attire seemed akin to a combination of Maomu Temple Fair costumes.
"Maomu Temple Fair? I remember it being an experimental event, but now that you mention it, those dresses do resemble the festival costumes of Maomu Temple Fair."
Hearing Qi Chen’s words, Captain Yan pondered for a moment and said. Initially, he hadn’t thought of it, but upon reflection, there did seem to be a connection.
However, this was puzzling. These things should theoretically have nothing to do with the enemy.
"I don’t recall hearing about the Maomu Temple Fair. Did it stop happening later?"
Feng Yuan looked at Qi Chen and the others in puzzlement, having never heard of the Maomu Temple Fair. Otherwise, with his personality, he wouldn’t have missed it.
"To be precise, the Maomu Temple Fair was only held once. Initially, it was a city event planned to promote tourism and local agriculture products. Sadly, it was a failed attempt, with only locals participating, so it was discontinued."
Before Qi Chen could speak, Captain Yan explained for him. Compared to Qi Chen, Captain Yan knew more about the inside story, as Qi Chen was still in primary school when the Maomu Temple Fair was held.
"And those clothes? I don’t think I’ve seen them before, unless the Maomu Temple Fair costumes were specially designed?"
Rubbing his chin, Feng Yuan turned to Captain Yan, who nodded and said,
"To make the Maomu Temple Fair more unique, they hired people to write a corresponding background and design cultural and decorative clothing. The idea was to create a unique cultural event for Maomu City, but it ultimately failed."
"Although it was never held again, those items were specially commissioned by the city, retaining full rights. Similar items should not appear elsewhere. The city was criticized for this issue for a long time, so they are quite wary of it, even if another event is held, they don’t intend to use them."
Captain Yan said with some helplessness, deeming it a waste. Considerable effort went into organizing the Maomu Temple Fair, including commissioning professionals to integrate Maomu City’s history into an elaborate cultural background for the fair.
However, the event didn’t have a favorable outcome. Perhaps if it were held now, the results might have been different.
Nonetheless, it’s hard to even consider hosting the event again, or even using those specially commissioned costumes and decorations. Nobody dares or wants to bring up the subject.
"No wonder I’ve never seen anything similar since. Turns out it was shelved."
Qi Chen suddenly understood, and as everyone looked at him, he sheepishly scratched his head and said,
"Back then, I wanted to buy the Temple Blessing Flame Wolfhound figurine, but I couldn’t afford it. I didn’t expect it wouldn’t happen the following year. Every year when I was a kid, I’d go to Dongming Street for that figurine."
"Temple Blessing Flame Wolfhound? I always thought the Temple Blessing Wind Spirit Cat was cuter. Still, it’s a shame these things were shelved for that reason."
Dou Yanlan’s eyes lit up as she spoke, disappointed. Like Qi Chen, she hadn’t expected the Maomu Temple Fair to be a one-time event and missed out on the Temple Blessing Wind Spirit Cat figurine.
Qi Chen gave an awkward smile and didn’t argue. Feng Yuan glanced at the two, then turned to Captain Yan, asking,
"So, those costumes are unique."
"Exactly. Since they were costly, they couldn’t have been mere patchwork creations. Those patterns were based on historical Maomu designs and crafted around a pre-written backstory, ensuring each pattern had a credible source."
"But, it eventually proved to be a waste."
Smiling self-deprecatingly, Captain Yan evidently felt the initial heavy investment was unnecessary.
"So, those patterns are supposed to be proprietary, yet they’ve appeared on their clothes. This is quite curious."
Feng Yuan stroked his chin, observing the few of them. Those guys shouldn’t be from this world, but why would they dig up a history that seemingly no one cared about anymore?
Could it somehow be in the timeline divergence? Although Feng Yuan found it unlikely, maybe this was the truth?
But, if so, that would spell trouble because it would imply the mastermind might be linked to Maomu City.
"Interesting, these unique existences are appearing outside Maomu City as well, and they seem related to nearly forgotten items in those areas."
Just then, Veronia spoke, and Feng Yuan turned to her, asking,
"This is happening elsewhere too?"
"Yes, but they seem unable to handle it. They want to contain those things, but lack the strength, which is quite frustrating."
"You must’ve sent Divine Beasts to know this? Even they can’t handle it?"
Feng Yuan asked curiously since Veronia wasn’t an omniscient Divine Beast; her information could only have come from the Divine Beasts’ information network.
"Not that it can’t be handled; they’ve temporarily contained those things. But like me, they can’t completely eliminate them."
Her gaze passed through the void, looking at the strange figures in the Space of Mirror. Veronia said this with an inexplicable expression. Scratching his head, Feng Yuan said,
"True enough. Their unkillable nature is quite peculiar. Who knows where they came from?"
Honestly, Feng Yuan found these creatures to be quite troublesome. Such undying entities are extremely rare in the real world; once they appear, they’re very difficult to handle. Just like now, Feng Yuan has no idea what means to use to eliminate these undying enemies.
