The investigation into the hidden antagonist has hit a dead end. Feng Yuan had to temporarily set aside the idea of investigating further because the antagonist is hiding so well, possibly not even in the vicinity of Maomu City. He couldn’t leave Maomu City, making further investigation meaningless.
"Although there’s still a big problem unsolved, things are a bit better now."
Standing on the plaza outside the department store, Feng Yuan sighed as he watched the slowly bustling plaza. Veronia sat on her Rainbow Bubbles, focused on her phone without lifting her head, saying
"How good can it be? It’s just finding joy in adversity. Even though temples have been established gradually, they still cannot prevent the intrusion of external timelines."
Recently, the construction of temples naturally has not been neglected. Under coordination by Agunas and its companions, each temple receives the blessing of Divine Beasts. Although not every temple’s effect is satisfactory, it’s the best they could manage for now. Cities like Baiman, which have suffered, have sometimes had to temporarily merge with other cities.
There’s no alternative. Baiman City is relatively fortunate, meeting the minimum requirements, enabling the temple’s operation. Other cities aren’t necessarily as lucky. The consumption of Prayer Power means temples capable of using Top-level Divine Beasts’ blessings are exceedingly rare, even Maomu City doesn’t meet the standard.
Of course, Feng Yuan has a way to transform and substitute Prayer Power, but he hasn’t mentioned he has a solution because doing so might easily lead to new chaos, so it’s better to leave it as it is.
No matter the strength of the temple’s blessing, the ability to prevent spatial-temporal invasion is consistent, with no variation in strength. The additional effects might be considered a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, even with these eliminations, after excluding cities that don’t meet construction requirements, many cities still lack materials to build temples. Even in the Great Xia, one-third of the territory remains without temple shelter.
Things are relatively better than before, but compared to their initial expectations, the idea can contain conflicts within specific regions has a significant gap.
"It’s much better than before. At least defense is much easier, and the establishment of defense zones is less troublesome. Although there are still battlefields within the national borders, there’s at least a safe hinterland, right?"
Feng Yuan smiled, unconcerned about this issue. In Maomu City, there’s no city to the southeast to offer a defense, allowing other timelines to invade from that area’s boundaries, while other directions are covered by temples established in neighboring cities.
This change made Maomu City’s defense allocations much easier; at least they didn’t need to face the constant threat of the enemy appearing anywhere.
Of course, despite this, the defense pressure remained significant because of Feng Yuan, as the Imperial Timeline places great importance on Maomu City.
Since many areas have become hinterlands, the need for border-wide defenses has reverted to a similar initial appearance, gradually bringing the wilderness back to normalcy.
Everything seems to be developing in a positive direction. Unfortunately, Feng Yuan and his companions well understood this is but an illusion. The deeply hidden antagonist could shatter this fragile temporary peace anytime.
"Sigh, really, if not for that strange existence, I would probably be enjoying the rare winter sunshine with them joyfully."
Glancing at the people around him, Feng Yuan couldn’t help but sigh. This troublesome issue he did talk about with Agunas and its companions, but because it’s a serious issue, and without a solution, making it public might be pointless. So, ordinary people weren’t aware of the shadow looming over them.
"You could simply pretend this matter doesn’t exist, after all, it doesn’t have much to do with you."
Veronia said casually without lifting her head. Feng Yuan looked speechlessly at Veronia. How could this matter not concern him, since it involved Qi Chen and his companions? No matter what, he couldn’t simply ignore it.
Moreover, making such a commotion, even pulling the war timeline in, Feng Yuan found it hard to believe the hidden antagonist was harmless.
"Really, forget it, but what about Qi Chen and his companions? They’ve been gone for quite a while?"
Feng Yuan shook his head, deciding not to argue with Veronia. After a moment, he looked toward the restroom with a bit of confusion; he and Qi Chen had agreed to go to the department store together to relieve pressure from the investigation reaching no result.
However, if he remembered correctly, they’ve been in the restroom for quite a while?
Thinking of something, Feng Yuan’s expression changed. With a gesture, the Black Ancient Book appeared, and Feng Yuan rushed towards the restroom.
Veronia, who initially didn’t care much, raised her head to watch Feng Yuan disappear in the distance. Tamur gently swayed its body and said
"I didn’t sense anything unusual."
"Perhaps that’s precisely why he’s worried."
Veronia snorted, controlling her Rainbow Bubbles to catch up with Feng Yuan. There were several public restrooms around the plaza in front of the department store, but the direction Qi Chen and his companions went only had one, so Feng Yuan quickly arrived at the restroom.
However, he didn’t discover any sign of Qi Chen and his companions there. Just as Feng Yuan’s expression changed and he prepared to open the Black Ancient Book to find them, Qi Chen’s voice appeared, shouting
"Feng Yuan! Over here!"
Looking towards the direction of the voice, Feng Yuan found Ah Mu had somehow returned to its original form, with Qi Chen standing on the trunk of a giant tree, waving at him.
Below was a small ornamental grove. Though it was a grove, it didn’t obstruct the view. However, in front of the grove, people gathered, all looking ready and waiting, seemingly confronting something.
Seeing Qi Chen unharmed, Feng Yuan sighed with relief, summoning the Black Sickle and allowing the Black Ancient Book to float beside him. The situation over there wasn’t clear for now; caution was needed.
With preparations made, Feng Yuan walked directly towards the crowd. Upon seeing Feng Yuan draw a weapon, people made way involuntarily, even though Feng Yuan appeared younger than many.
"What is...?"
Upon seeing the One-leaf Fox being walked like a dog by Cotton, Feng Yuan was stunned. The state of this group of One-leaf Fox was unusual, very fierce, and had peculiar attributes; normal One-leaf Foxes didn’t have such sinister attack methods.
"What’s going on?"
Feng Yuan went to Dou Yanlan’s side, asking puzzledly. The state of these One-leaf Foxes was abnormal. Dou Yanlan glanced at Feng Yuan and said
"I don’t know. Just now, this group of One-leaf Fox suddenly attacked the nearby tourists. Even surrounded by us, they remain very aggressive, strange indeed, but what’s really happening, we don’t know."
"Moreover, there are many of these One-leaf Fox."
Pointing to the side, Dou Yanlan seemed a bit troubled. Over there, numerous One-leaf Fox lay down, with several Beastmasters vigilantly watching the fallen One-leaf Foxes. Just then, a Beastmaster guarding nearby seized the opportunity and knocked out the group of One-leaf Fox chasing Cotton.
However, in the next second, another group of One-leaf Fox rushed out, continuing to chase Cotton.
"What’s this strange situation? They seem to be suddenly appearing?"
Feng Yuan blinked in disbelief. These One-leaf Fox were emerging on their own? Yet, in his perception, these One-leaf Fox appeared similar to regular Spirit Beasts.
Wait! That’s wrong; the attribute power wasn’t right. Normal Wood Attribute Power shouldn’t be so peculiar. What’s happening here?
"They look like One-leaf Fox anyway, but how come those ultimate moves aren’t ones a One-leaf Fox could learn?"
Watching a One-leaf Fox throw out Netherfire, Veronia said in surprise. One-leaf Fox are Wood Attribute Spirit Beasts; where did Ghost Series ultimate moves come from? Though learning non-native attribute moves isn’t entirely impossible, this leap was enormous.
Life-type Spirit Beasts wanting to learn and master Ghost and Death Series ultimate moves isn’t easy. Similarly, those powerful life-force endowed moves used by Life-type Spirit Beasts are hard for Ghost and Death Series to grasp.
What’s really going on with this group of One-leaf Fox, why are they using ultimate moves they shouldn’t be able to?
"Appearing continuously? I want to see just how many of these One-leaf Fox are there."
Gripping the Black Sickle, Feng Yuan muttered, instructing Dou Yanlan to relay orders to Cotton, before stepping forward and vigorously swinging the sickle.
The black Death Storm was unleashed, directly sweeping the group of One-leaf Fox. As before, as this group of One-leaf Fox fainted, new One-leaf Fox emerged again.
However, Feng Yuan’s summoned Death Storm didn’t vanish, continuously tossing aside fainted One-leaf Fox. Soon, the clearing was piled with unconscious One-leaf Fox.
This situation continued for several minutes before Feng Yuan canceled the Death Storm, seeing no more One-leaf Fox emerge and thus said in surprise
"There must be thousands of them, right? What’s going on here."
