Liuyun Temple is an ancient temple, differing from others in that it has only one temple guardian. Of course, given the size of Liuyun Temple, one person is enough.
As for the ritual, it is naturally not held by the temple guardian of Liuyun Temple alone. In fact, the person serving as the temple guardian must be of high moral standing and, unless no one else can be found, should be someone who has made significant contributions to Maomu City.
This is also a unique aspect of Liuyun Temple. Since its establishment, it has been dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives defending Maomu City. Unless the government has independent tablets for offerings, all such individuals can be included in the roster of Liuyun Temple.
Early in the morning, the temple guardian, along with those who came to assist, had made all the preparations. In the normal process, the entire ritual lasts from morning till night and continues until dawn the next day. Given the lengthy duration, those assisting, aside from the temple guardian, take turns.
When Feng Yuan arrived, the previous wave of people who came to offer their respects was leaving. Even though people were coming and going, Changfu Road did not feel noisy, as most people walked by silently.
"Truly unique."
Scanning the crowd around him, Feng Yuan muttered under his breath. Noticing Qi Chen’s parents, Feng Yuan hesitated to go over and greet them, thinking it best not to draw attention in this situation.
However, perhaps due to lingering effects, Feng Yuan’s gaze still caught the attention of Qi Chen’s father, who turned his head and noticed the rather conspicuous Feng Yuan.
There was no helping it; as everyone else slightly lowered their heads and hurried on, Feng Yuan, moving against the flow and curiously looking around, was indeed quite conspicuous.
Seeing Feng Yuan’s arrival, Qi Chen’s father was a bit puzzled. It was obvious that Feng Yuan was unlikely to be there for the memorial service, as Feng Yuan had little connection to Maomu City.
Noticing the other party had already seen him, Feng Yuan couldn’t pretend not to see and walked over, speaking quietly as he joined them in a corner.
"Hello, Uncle and Auntie. Are you heading back?"
"No, we’re just going to get lunch. But what brings you here?"
Qi Chen’s father spoke with a hint of curiosity, scratching his head. Feng Yuan said awkwardly,
"I’ve never seen the ritual before, and there’s nowhere else decent to visit right now. The department store... is not quite to my taste."
After a moment of surprise, Qi Chen’s father sighed and said,
"Then should I ask Xiao Chen to accompany you for a walk here?"
"Hehe, I agreed to meet them by the river."
Feng Yuan chuckled and explained that instead of meeting at the station or elsewhere, it was because Qi Chen and the others seemed to want to go to Liuyun Temple to burn incense, and Feng Yuan definitely wasn’t going to do that.
It’s not that he’s unwilling; rather, Feng Yuan is afraid of causing trouble. Temples that simply require the Power of Prayer are fine, but a place like Liuyun Temple, which leans more towards faith, is trouble if it does have any supernatural aspect. Feng Yuan bowing there would surely cause problems.
Not every deity is worthy of serious worship from Feng Yuan, so he had no desire to join the bustle at Liuyun Temple.
"By the river? That makes sense."
Qi Chen’s father realized, acknowledging that unlike Feng Yuan, as locals, Qi Chen and the others should indeed first visit the temple to burn incense.
After a brief chat, Feng Yuan parted ways with them. Watching Feng Yuan walk away, Qi Chen’s father sighed and said,
"We seem to have overlooked his feelings. We should mention it to Old Yan later. Considering what he’s done, he deserves our attention."
By the riverside, Netherworld’s aura was slowly spreading, and Feng Yuan noticed Long Boduo there as well. Approaching, Feng Yuan patted his shoulder and asked somewhat curiously,
"Why are you here? Joining the excitement?"
Human-formed Long Boduo was lost in thought, not noticing Feng Yuan’s approach, and was startled when suddenly patted. Seeing it was Feng Yuan, Long Boduo patted his chest and said wryly,
"They’re drawing a large amount of Netherworld’s aura using the Crystal Domain this time. Naturally, I had to come over and see what’s going on. You never know if someone crazy might try something against the Netherworld."
While everyone knew the odds were low, it was always possible some abnormal minded person might try targeting the Netherworld. Therefore, the divine beasts of the Netherworld had been attentively monitoring various unusual situations.
Here in Maomu City, drawing a vast amount of Netherworld’s aura had made the river surface eerie and ghostly, impossible for them not to notice.
Long Boduo, upon investigating the situation, decided to stay around entirely due to Feng Yuan being in Maomu City, not expecting him to come over but staying to keep an eye on things should these drawn Netherworld auras result in any unexpected events. His presence would be helpful in handling them.
If it hadn’t been for Feng Yuan, Long Boduo would not have gone through such trouble, as it offered him no benefit. However, since Feng Yuan was in this city, helping out a bit was no trouble for Long Boduo.
"Didn’t they do this before?"
Upon hearing Long Boduo’s explanation, Feng Yuan was a bit surprised. After all, it was already well past morning with the sun high, yet the river still felt ominously like dusk due to the Netherworld aura.
Previously, Feng Yuan had presumed that ritual here always had such an eerie atmosphere, but apparently that wasn’t the case.
"Definitely not. Such events can’t go unnoticed by us. If they happened before, we would have known and even warned them."
Long Boduo shook his head slightly. Such disturbances aren’t insignificant, otherwise, he wouldn’t have come over. If they had previously engaged in such practices, the divine beasts of the Netherworld couldn’t have been unaware, and he wouldn’t have needed to investigate.
After all, it’s not unheard of for activities disturbing the Netherworld to occur. Other parties usually notified the Netherworld divine beasts, but here in Maomu City, this was the first time involving such large-scale activity, and nobody knew it would alert the Netherworld divine beasts.
"So what’s your current plan?"
"To guard here temporarily because they lack experience in this matter. But you, this kind of event, aren’t you uninterested?"
Long Boduo curiously observed Feng Yuan. Although Feng Yuan hadn’t donned a special outfit, his typical style was simple, with clothes in black, white, gray, and dark colors, which suited such occasions well.
"Not particularly interested, but it’s nice to have a change of pace. See, even though it’s a self-organized memorial event, almost the entire city is participating."
Clasping his hands behind his back, Feng Yuan turned to the silent crowd and smiled. Although for the deceased it might not carry much significance, what else could they do?
In the face of calamity, there’s very little ordinary people can do.
"Indeed, despite no one formally maintaining order, the organization is remarkable. Humans truly are intriguing creatures."
Long Boduo nodded in agreement with Feng Yuan, admitting that in its impression, human gatherings were usually noisy. Such orderly, solemn collective events were a rare sight for it.
"Qi Chen and Yanlan have arrived. Want to take a walk together?"
Noticing Qi Chen and Dou Yanlan in school uniforms, Feng Yuan invited Long Boduo. Without hesitation, he agreed. After all, being present was merely to facilitate intervention should any complications arise, without being tied to a specific spot.
Naturally, his absence wouldn’t matter, as he acted on his own accord.
"Right now, only the Blessing Lamp is available. The Star Lamp will be lit at night. We won’t have the opportunity, but you do have the qualification."
Upon reunification, Qi Chen suggested Feng Yuan release a Blessing Lamp. Although termed a Blessing Lamp, it was merely a special floating lantern on the river. The material would dissolve in water, yet thanks to another special material, remained water-resistant, appearing as a blossoming lotus. However, a tablet made of special material was placed at its center.
The names of the deceased were inscribed on that tablet.
Releasing the floating lamp was to bless and wish them a better next life.
As for the Star Lamp, it was quite special. Although Feng Yuan hadn’t seen it, he heard some things about it from Qi Chen.
Floating lamps drifted on the river, whereas the Star Lamp floated upward towards the starry sky.
Unlike the floating lamp, any resident of Maomu City could release a floating lamp, but the Star Lamp was reserved for individuals who made significant contributions to Maomu City.
The Star Lamp had no individual tablet but carried blessings and prayers for all. Naturally, Qi Chen and the others lacked the qualification to release a Star Lamp, though Feng Yuan evidently had such a privilege.
"I think I’ll pass, I’m just here to join in, no need for that."
Feng Yuan shook his head slightly and said.
