"Sir, ma'am, we'll just iron these clothes for you. Please have a seat for a moment." The sales associate led the two to a seating area and brought them some tea. Her service was impeccable.
"I'm going to the restroom," Lin Xue said, standing up after sitting for a moment.
Zhao Yuan nodded, casually picking up a magazine from the coffee table and flipping through it out of boredom.
Just as she entered the restroom, two more customers walked into the boutique.
These two weren't very old either. The man was dressed in a flamboyant purple outfit, looking quite flashy. The girl had a standard "influencer face," wore heavy makeup, and clung tightly to the man's arm, as if wishing she could permanently rest her head on his chest.
Their outfits and their behavior were so cringey that even the well-trained sales associates could barely stand to look.
After entering, the man scanned the room and was momentarily stunned when he suddenly spotted Zhao Yuan in the seating area.
"Zhao Yuan?" he called out tentatively.
Zhao Yuan looked up, and his face also registered surprise when he saw the man. "Ding Yang?"
"Haha, it really is you! I can't believe we'd meet again, classmate." Ding Yang walked toward him with the girl and said with a laugh, "We haven't seen each other since high school graduation, have we?"
This Ding Yang was not only from Zhao Yuan's hometown but was also his classmate in high school. His family was much wealthier than Zhao Yuan's.
Ding Yang's father was a contractor who'd made a lot of money over the years working on construction sites. As a result, Ding Yang could barely be considered one of the nouveau riche, and he'd been a spendthrift ever since high school. His college entrance exam scores were poor, but his family had money and used their connections to get him into a university here in Rongcheng City.
Meeting an old acquaintance in a foreign land, Zhao Yuan was thrilled. He stood up, ready to catch up properly with Ding Yang.
Unfortunately, Ding Yang had no such intention.
"What are you doing here?" Ding Yang asked.
Before Zhao Yuan could answer, he continued, talking to himself, "Oh, I know. You're here applying for a part-time job, right? Ha, you've really come to the wrong place. Take a good look around. The sales associates here are all pretty girls. You're a guy, and not a particularly good-looking one at that. It'd be a miracle if they hired you!"
Zhao Yuan's brow furrowed slightly.
Back in high school, Ding Yang had been famous for his foul mouth and love of showing off. It seemed going to college hadn't changed that one bit.
He didn't want to stoop to Ding Yang's level. He wasn't angry, just shaking his head as he explained, "No, I'm here to buy something..."
He couldn't even finish his sentence before Ding Yang cut him off with a mocking laugh.
Sizing Zhao Yuan up, Ding Yang said, "Buy something here? You? HAHAHA, that's hilarious. Zhao Yuan, oh Zhao Yuan, I never thought a guy with such honest-looking, bushy eyebrows would learn to lie. A single item in this store costs tens of thousands! You can afford that? What a joke! Next time you want to brag, at least make it believable, okay?"
The girl on Ding Yang's arm also started laughing.
Ding Yang turned his head, gave her a cringey kiss, and then said, "Baby, go pick out whatever you like."
"You're buying it for me?" the girl asked, her face lighting up with surprise.
"Of course!" Ding Yang reached out and squeezed her butt a few times, saying with a sly grin, "You're my girlfriend. You have to have a few designer items to keep up appearances. Otherwise, I'd lose face!"
"Hubby, you're the best!" The girl was overjoyed. She threw her arms around Ding Yang and started kissing him wildly, making the nearby sales associate very uncomfortable. The associate hesitated, wondering if she should go over and remind them to be more considerate of their surroundings...
Fortunately, the girl soon let go of Ding Yang and went to pick out what she wanted.
Ding Yang suddenly remembered something and quickly called out a reminder, "You can only pick one thing! And try to keep the price under thirty thousand yuan!"
Hearing this, the girl was somewhat disappointed, but she still replied in a cloyingly sweet voice that could make your skin crawl, "Okay, hubby."
Ding Yang sat down across from Zhao Yuan, crossed his legs, and said with extreme arrogance, "My chick is a total knockout, right? She's the 'campus belle' of our department. I had to spend a ton of money to land her."
After bragging for a bit, he added, "Alright, Zhao Yuan, I know your situation even if others don't. If you're looking for a part-time job, just say so. I won't laugh at you. Hey, you know what? Why don't you just come work for me as my lackey? I'll give you three thousand a month. You don't have to do much, just hold my umbrella and carry my bags when I'm out shopping. Easy enough, right? You get to earn living expenses, and I get an honor student from a prestigious university as my underling. Tsk, tsk, just thinking about it gives me so much face..."
"No, thank you," Zhao Yuan politely declined. "I'm not planning on getting a part-time job right now."
The rejection made Ding Yang furious, and his expression changed in an instant. "Zhao Yuan, don't be a fool who refuses a favor! I'm offering you this position because I think highly of you!"
Zhao Yuan just smiled and didn't engage him.
Ding Yang was about to lose his temper when his girlfriend and a sales associate walked over with a credit card machine.
Ding Yang temporarily suppressed his anger and asked his girlfriend, "Finished shopping?"
"All done, thanks, hubby." The girl plopped right into his lap.
Ding Yang took out his credit card and paid. Just as he was about to start lecturing Zhao Yuan again, he saw several sales associates walking over carrying numerous bags, big and small. A quick count showed at least ten or twenty shopping bags.
Ding Yang was instantly dumbfounded. Forgetting all about lecturing Zhao Yuan, he turned and roared at the girl, "Didn't I tell you to only pick one thing? Why did you buy so much? Are you trying to take me for a ride?"
In his attempt to look cool earlier, he hadn't even looked at the bill when he paid. Now, seeing so many bags, he broke out in a cold sweat. 'Holy shit, this has to be at least hundreds of thousands! Maybe even over a million!'
Ding Yang's ferocious expression nearly scared the girl to tears. She was also confused, saying with an aggrieved look, "I don't know what's going on either. I only picked out one thing."
Ding Yang's eyebrow shot up. He pushed the girl aside, stood up, and barked at the approaching sales associates, "What's the meaning of this? We clearly only picked one item! How much did you just charge me? If you don't give me an explanation today, I'm going to smash this whole damn rip-off joint!"
The sales associates were taken aback, staring blankly for a moment before they understood.
Inwardly, they were complaining, 'What the hell do these clothes and bags have to do with you?'
Outwardly, they had to force a smile and explain, "Sir, you've misunderstood. These clothes and bags aren't yours."
Ding Yang sneered, "Not ours? Then whose are they? Besides us, he's the only other person in this store right now."
At this, he raised his hand and pointed at Zhao Yuan. "You're not going to tell me he's the one who bought all this, are you?"
