Divine Level Witch Doctor

Chapter 320 - 320: The Heart is Missing

Yu Ke was a woman of action. She immediately said, "In that case, let's get the body to the forensic center right away. Zhao Yuan and I will perform an autopsy immediately and try to determine the cause of death as soon as possible."

Wen Ji nodded. "That's exactly what I was hoping for."

He immediately called over some officers, who placed the deceased in a body bag. They carried it downstairs to the waiting coroner's van to be transported to the forensic center.

The condition of the deceased had already been thoroughly photographed and documented as evidence when the police first arrived, so moving the body now wouldn't affect the crime scene.

"What's this?"

After the body was carried away, Zhao Yuan noticed some small, dark-green specks on the part of the sofa where the body had been sitting. They looked like residue left by something.

Wen Ji and Yu Ke came over to take a look. After a close inspection, they couldn't draw any conclusions. They could only have the crime scene investigator scrape off some of the specks and place them in a small bag to be taken back for analysis.

"Let's go. We're heading to the forensic center."

After calling out to Zhao Yuan, Yu Ke turned and walked out of the room where the incident occurred.

Zhao Yuan didn't leave right away. He scanned his surroundings.

He kept feeling that something was wrong with this room, but he couldn't pinpoint what it was. Even after activating his Qi Observation Technique, he didn't discover anything out of the ordinary.

'Maybe I'm just too nervous and imagining things?' Shaking his head, Zhao Yuan suppressed his suspicions. Urged on by Yu Ke, he left the crime scene and followed her to the forensic center.

Once they arrived at the forensic center, Yu Ke led Zhao Yuan to wash his hands, disinfect, and change into a sterile gown and slippers before they finally entered the autopsy room.

The deceased was already on the operating table. Besides Yu Ke, there was another forensic doctor who was there to be her assistant.

When this forensic doctor saw Zhao Yuan, he frowned and said, "Dr. Yu, why did you bring a student? Hmm... isn't this that Zhao Yuan guy who's been all over the internet recently? Isn't he a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine? What could he possibly know about forensics? Don't let him cause trouble and drag us down."

When the man mentioned Traditional Chinese Medicine, his tone was filled with skepticism and disdain.

Zhao Yuan was all too familiar with this kind of reaction.

In the country today, not only in the medical community but even among the general public, many people regarded Traditional Chinese Medicine as mere superstition.

These people never stopped to think: if Traditional Chinese Medicine was superstition, how could it have spread beyond the country's borders and been accepted in places like Japan, South Korea, and even in Europe and America? Were the people in other countries all fools? Besides, Traditional Chinese Medicine was a discipline that had been passed down for several thousand years, the culmination of wisdom from countless generations. How could it be so easily slandered and discredited?

However, Zhao Yuan hadn't expected to run into someone prejudiced against Traditional Chinese Medicine at the forensic center of all places.

Yu Ke's brow twitched. She shot him down without holding back. "Wei Hao, shut your mouth. No one will think you're a mute if you don't speak!"

Wei Hao's expression immediately darkened. "Dr. Yu, what's that supposed to mean?"

Yu Ke replied coldly, "Zhao Yuan is my student. You have no right to boss him around. Our job today is to dissect the body and find the cause of death, not to debate the merits of Traditional Chinese versus Western medicine. If this is your attitude, please leave. I don't need you as an assistant. With Zhao Yuan here, it's more than enough anyway."

Wei Hao wanted to lash out, but he didn't dare.

Yu Ke had considerable influence at the forensic center; he didn't dare, nor did he want, to completely fall out with her. Besides, if he really left in a huff, he would definitely be criticized for it later.

After taking a deep breath, Wei Hao suppressed his anger and stopped antagonizing Zhao Yuan. He obediently began his work as the assistant.

But he soon discovered that whenever Yu Ke needed something, she didn't call on him at all. She was giving all her instructions to Zhao Yuan.

'Damn it, is she treating me like a decoration?' Wei Hao was extremely annoyed, grumbling to himself. 'The kid is just a Traditional Chinese Medicine student. How good could he possibly be at dissection? You're letting him be your assistant, helping you dissect this body? Just watch, he's bound to screw it up!'

Soon enough, however, Wei Hao's expression changed.

The annoyance and disdain vanished, replaced by sheer shock.

He saw that Zhao Yuan's knife skills were superb—fast, precise, and decisive. He didn't look like a novice at all! In fact, even Wei Hao had to admit his own skills couldn't compare.

'How is this possible?' Wei Hao found this fact impossible to accept.

Working together, Zhao Yuan and Yu Ke quickly opened the body's thoracic and abdominal cavities, preparing to inspect the internal organs.

But just then, Zhao Yuan's expression changed abruptly. He cried out in alarm, "Where's the heart? Why is the heart missing?"

"What?" Yu Ke asked. Her eyesight wasn't as good as Zhao Yuan's, so she hadn't seen inside the thoracic cavity right away.

"The heart is missing? Are you kidding me? The deceased has no wounds on her entire body, so how could the heart just vanish into thin air? Do you think we're filming a horror movie?" Wei Hao scoffed at Zhao Yuan's words. In his view, Zhao Yuan was probably just incompetent and couldn't find the heart's proper location. He couldn't help but mock him, "You can't even find the heart, and you have the nerve to come to an autopsy?"

Zhao Yuan hadn't wanted to bother with Wei Hao, but the guy's constant chattering was incredibly annoying. So, he raised an eyebrow, turned his head, and barked, "Shut your mouth!"

This shout carried the force of a tiger's roar and a dragon's cry. It shocked Wei Hao so much his face turned pale and his heart pounded in his chest. He was stunned into silence, not daring to make another peep.

Zhao Yuan paid him no more mind and said to Yu Ke, "There's no heart inside the deceased's thoracic cavity!"

"How is that possible?" Yu Ke also found it hard to believe. But after searching for a moment, she looked up in shock and said, stunned, "There really is no heart!"

A series of questions instantly flooded Zhao Yuan's mind: 'Why was there no heart in the deceased's chest cavity? She had no external wounds at all, so where could her heart have gone? It couldn't have just vanished, could it? Did the victims in the two previous, similar cases also have their hearts missing?'

Just then, a sudden noise interrupted Zhao Yuan's thoughts.

He turned to see that Wei Hao, overcome with fright, had stumbled and fallen to the floor, knocking over a tray of surgical instruments that had been placed to the side. He stammered, "Oh my god, the body's intact, how could the heart be gone? This... this can't be a real Ghost, can it?"

As his words fell, the temperature in the autopsy room seemed to drop several degrees, making both Zhao Yuan and Yu Ke shiver involuntarily.

Yu Ke composed herself and snapped, "Get up, now! Look at the state of you. We don't need your help here. Get out!"

That was exactly what Wei Hao wanted. At this point, he would rather be reprimanded and punished than stay in this place for a second longer.

This corpse was just too bizarre! He had been a forensic doctor for several years and had never encountered anything so strange. He didn't want—and was afraid of—getting tainted by something unclean because of it.

Zhao Yuan, on the other hand, remained calm.

He turned his gaze back to the opened chest cavity, and suddenly, his eyes lit up. "Huh? What's this...?"
