Lu Qing's tone was somber and chilling; there was clearly a story there.
Unfortunately, this wasn't the time to press for details. Although Zhao Yuan was curious, he could only suppress his questions and wait to ask later.
He hurried to catch up with the paramedics pushing the gurney. After glancing at the ID badges clipped to their white coats, he said, "City Second Hospital. You know where that is, right?"
Lu Qing replied, "I know. I'll get there as soon as I can."
After hanging up, Zhao Yuan followed them to the ambulance and helped the paramedics lift the girl, who had already passed out from the pain, into the vehicle.
"Thanks for your help." One of the doctors, a man named Guan Tao, was a friend of Pan Mei's. After thanking them, he was about to ask Zhao Yuan and Pan Mei to get out of the ambulance.
"We're going with you to the hospital," Pan Mei said. "This isn't a typical acute abdominal condition, nor is it food poisoning. It's most likely that new type of parasitic disease. She needs surgery to remove the parasite as soon as possible. Zhao Yuan is more familiar with this new parasite; he might be able to help during the operation."
"A new type of parasite? You mean the one the CDC has been warning everyone about recently?" Guan Tao asked in surprise.
"That's the one," Pan Mei confirmed with a nod.
After a moment of consideration, Guan Tao agreed. "Alright, you can ride with us back to the hospital." He then closed the back doors of the ambulance.
The driver hit the siren and sped off in the ambulance, rushing toward the nearest hospital, City Second Hospital.
Meanwhile, inside the ambulance, Guan Tao was sizing up Zhao Yuan. "You look really familiar. Have we met somewhere before?" As he said this, he suddenly recalled Pan Mei's earlier introduction, slapped his thigh, and exclaimed, "Zhao Yuan! You're *the* Zhao Yuan! That monster from West Hua Medical University!"
'What? A... a monster?'
Dark lines instantly appeared on Zhao Yuan's forehead.
Guan Tao realized he'd misspoken and quickly corrected himself. "Sorry, sorry! I didn't mean it like that. I just meant you're incredible."
Zhao Yuan gave a wry smile. "It's fine. I'm used to it."
He really was used to it. Ever since defeating the Jinling Zhao Family, he'd heard that kind of assessment quite a lot.
Even though Guan Tao practiced Western medicine, he'd heard of Zhao Yuan's skills. He immediately said, "With your help, we'll have a much better chance of successfully treating this patient. Oh, right, does she really have that new parasitic disease?"
"One hundred percent," Zhao Yuan answered without a shred of doubt.
A little over ten minutes later, the ambulance pulled into City Second Hospital and stopped outside the emergency department of the main clinic building.
Everyone worked together to lift the gurney out of the ambulance and push it into the emergency department. The male student hurried off to pay the fees and handle the paperwork.
A middle-aged doctor in his forties walked over and asked, "What's the situation with this patient?"
Guan Tao quickly replied, "Director Song, when we got to the patient, she had already fainted from severe abdominal pain. In the ambulance, we took her blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitals. We found that the readings were fluctuating, none of them within the normal range. We also drew blood in the ambulance and were about to send it for analysis. According to Zhao Yuan's diagnosis, the patient is very likely suffering from that new type of parasitic disease the CDC has been warning about!"
Director Song was taken aback. "Zhao Yuan? Which Zhao Yuan?"
Guan Tao answered, "The one from West Hua Medical University. The one who's amazing at Traditional Chinese Medicine."
Director Song had heard the name Zhao Yuan before. He frowned and asked, "A new type of parasitic disease? Are you certain?"
"I'm certain!" Zhao Yuan stepped forward. "Director Song, I can guarantee it. She has the new parasitic disease. She needs surgery immediately to remove the parasite, or her life will be in danger!"
"And who are you?" A flicker of annoyance crossed Director Song's face.
Zhao Yuan introduced himself, "I'm Zhao Yuan."
Director Song looked Zhao Yuan up and down, surprised by his youth. Director Song had studied Western medicine and worked in emergency care; he had no interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although he'd heard of Zhao Yuan's accomplishments, he'd never seen any videos of him, so he didn't recognize him.
"So you're Zhao Yuan. I've heard about you. However, whether or not the patient has a new type of parasitic disease isn't decided just because you say so." After lecturing Zhao Yuan, Director Song turned to Guan Tao and ordered, "Run a blood test and a stool analysis on the patient to see if she has a parasitic infection."
"Yes, sir," Guan Tao replied, about to go write up the orders.
But Zhao Yuan interjected, "That's useless! This new type of parasite is different from ordinary ones. I'm afraid blood and stool tests won't be able to detect it."
Guan Tao paused in his tracks. Director Song arched an eyebrow. "Then how did you diagnose her with this new parasitic disease?"
Zhao Yuan smiled wryly to himself. 'I can't just tell him I diagnosed it using the Qi Observation Technique, can I?' He could only say, "I made the diagnosis based on the four diagnostic methods—the patient's symptoms, facial complexion, pulse, and other signs."
"So blood and stool tests are useless, but your so-called 'four diagnostic methods' are? Young man, you need to be practical and base your conclusions on facts. Don't just spout nonsense!" Director Song shook his head, clearly not believing a word Zhao Yuan said.
Director Song was already biased against Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Zhao Yuan's youth only made him more suspicious and distrustful.
Zhao Yuan picked up on this.
He knew that at a time like this, words were useless. He had to show him something concrete. Otherwise, if they delayed treatment, the price would be a human life!
Zhao Yuan's mind raced, and he came up with a plan.
In a single bound, he lunged toward the gurney that a nurse was pushing. He grabbed the gurney with one hand, while his other hand quickly dipped into his pocket, using the movement as cover to take out a slender Golden Long Needle.
The nurses pushing the gurney were stunned. After Zhao Yuan grabbed it, it felt as if it were weighed down by a thousand pounds, and they couldn't push it another inch.
Director Song, Guan Tao, and the others were also astonished, as they had no idea what Zhao Yuan was planning to do.
But they found out in the very next second.
Zhao Yuan's right hand shot out, and with lightning speed, he plunged the Golden Long Needle into the unconscious girl's abdomen.
Seeing this, Director Song was beside himself with rage. He lunged toward Zhao Yuan, trying to grab the hand holding the needle while shouting, "What are you doing? Stop that this instant! Security? Where's security? Get in here and restrain this man for harming a patient!"
Zhao Yuan's hand holding the needle was as steady as Mount Taishan. No matter how hard Director Song pulled, it didn't budge an inch.
Not only that, but Zhao Yuan turned his head and said to him, "Director Song, calm down for a moment and look at the patient's abdomen."
'Look at the patient's abdomen?'
Director Song froze for a second, his eyes instinctively drawn to the unconscious girl's abdomen.
One look was all it took. His expression changed dramatically, and he gasped in shock, "What in the world is that!?"
