Densely packed and countless, insects crawled out from the flowers, trees, and soil, swarming like a tide toward the Ligusticum striatum Powder Zhao Yuan had scattered and instantly submerging it!
The insects were of all different shapes and species, but every one of them showed immense interest in the Ligusticum striatum Powder. They even started fighting amongst themselves for a single bite, showing no camaraderie whatsoever.
Lu Qing was stunned.
She never would have imagined that this seemingly normal lawn and garden was hiding so many Gu Insects!
Even though she didn't have trypophobia, the sight still made her skin crawl, and she couldn't help but shiver.
At the same time, a wave of delayed fear washed over her. 'If Zhao Yuan hadn't noticed what was going on in the yard and they had rashly climbed the fence, they would've been instantly swarmed by these Gu Insects and eaten alive!'
The scene also reminded her of the moment they'd tried to capture a murderer three years ago.
'The police plan had been covert, but when they moved in, they found the killer knew every detail. He had laid specific traps for them, causing heavy casualties while he retreated with arrogant ease. Back then, they'd suspected a mole on the force. Now, thinking about it, the one who tipped off the killer probably wasn't a mole at all. It was these insects!'
'Since a Gu Master could raise and command Gu Insects, they must have a way to communicate with them!'
Lu Qing was stunned, but Zhao Yuan remained calm.
Fearing that the Hundred Insects Gu fighting amongst themselves would alert Ying Ji in the villa, he quickly grabbed several more handfuls of Ligusticum striatum Powder and tossed them over. At the same time, he urged her, "Don't just stand there gawking! Come and help!"
"Oh, right." Lu Qing quickly nodded. Mimicking Zhao Yuan, she grabbed a handful of Ligusticum striatum Powder and tossed it into the yard behind the fence.
That handful of Ligusticum striatum Powder was instantly devoured by the Hundred Insects Gu.
For the next several minutes, Zhao Yuan and Lu Qing kept tossing Ligusticum striatum Powder into the yard until every last one of the Hundred Insects Gu had eaten some and fallen into a stupor.
Lu Qing tossed one more handful of Ligusticum striatum Powder. Seeing no reaction from the Hundred Insects Gu, she stopped and asked curiously, "Are they all dead?"
"No, they're just unconscious," Zhao Yuan explained. "I was worried there might be a special connection between the Gu Insects and their Gu Master. Killing them could have alerted her, and that would have been bad."
"I see." Lu Qing finally understood. It also explained why that killer years ago had sent Gu Insects to the police station to conduct reconnaissance. He must have sensed it the moment they killed those flying insects that crawled out of the victim's body, and he had already made his preparations.
Lu Qing couldn't help but sigh. 'If only we'd had someone like Zhao Yuan back then, someone who knew the truth about Gu Insects. So many of my comrades wouldn't have died! And he... he would definitely still be alive...'
"Let's go inside," Zhao Yuan said. He glanced over at a nearby security camera and asked, "Officer Lu, are you sure this spot is out of the camera's line of sight?"
Lu Qing composed herself and replied, "Don't worry. It definitely can't see us. Otherwise, do you think you could have been so casually tossing around Ligusticum striatum Powder? We would've been discovered ages ago."
"Good point." Zhao Yuan smiled sheepishly. He grabbed the fence with both hands, braced his feet, and vaulted over in one smooth motion.
Lu Qing followed, vaulting into the yard in a similar fashion.
Meanwhile, in a room on the villa's second floor, blackout curtains were drawn tight, blocking all sunlight. Only four candles, one in each corner, cast a faint glow. As the flames swayed, the light flickered and danced, making the already eerie room feel even more bizarre.
In the center of the room, a large Rune was drawn on the floor in an unknown material. In the dim light, its dark red color made it look like the gaping maw of a Demon.
Ying Ji was sitting in the center of the Rune, her face as pale as paper. She was panting for breath, looking utterly weak.
"I never expected that man to be so powerful. He couldn't just see you; he managed to injure me *through* you," Ying Ji said softly, wiping a trickle of blood from the corner of her mouth.
The reason the Ghost Spirit had been able to go to the hospital during the day wasn't because its Level had increased to the point of being immune to sunlight. Rather, Ying Ji had used the Rune Array beneath her to channel her own Yang Qi, forming an invisible umbrella of Qi over the Ghost Spirit's head that shielded it from the sun.
When Zhao Yuan struck the Ghost Spirit, he had also damaged the invisible Qi umbrella, injuring her in the process.
Just then, the candlelight flickered violently. An ethereal, gloomy voice whispered in Ying Ji's ear, "That man's power is at least at the Qi Listening Realm. Otherwise, there's no way he could have detected my movements. What's more, he's carrying several Buddhist Sect treasures. The moment they hit me, I felt my Spirit Body destabilize. I almost dissipated completely!"
Ying Ji's brow furrowed. "Buddhist Sect treasures?" she muttered to herself. "Is he a Cultivator from a Buddhist Family? No, that can't be right. Why would a Buddhist Family Cultivator be studying Evil Gu?"
The Ghost Spirit's voice spoke again. "Miss, I fear that man will come for you. You must make preparations!"
Ying Ji paid it no mind. She shook her head, brimming with confidence. "You escaped quickly, and the man didn't give chase. There's no way he knows I live here. Besides, I've set up my Hundred Insects Gu outside. Even if he does show up, the moment he sets foot on the property, they will detect him and report back to me."
The Ghost Spirit said, "Miss, it's still best to be cautious. I have a feeling things won't be over this easily..."
"Of course it won't be over this easily!" Ying Ji snarled, grinding her teeth. "This man didn't just injure you further, he injured me too! I will absolutely make him pay a terrible price! A fellow Cultivator will be here shortly. When we join forces, even if that man truly is a Qi Listening Realm Cultivator, we'll be more than a match for him!"
Consumed by her desire for revenge, Ying Ji never would have imagined that Zhao Yuan had already snuck into her yard.
And the Hundred Insects Gu she considered an inescapable trap had not only failed to alert her, but had been completely neutralized by Zhao Yuan with Ligusticum striatum Powder...
Once in the yard, Zhao Yuan and Lu Qing carefully navigated around the unconscious Hundred Insects Gu and approached the front door of the villa.
Lu Qing had intended to pick the lock, but a glance down revealed it was a top-tier, high-security fingerprint lock. Her lock-picking skills were completely useless against it.
Zhao Yuan looked up, scanning the villa. He pointed to an open window on the second floor and said, "We'll climb in through there."
