Chapter 453 | The Confession Arc

Chapter 453: 453 | The Confession Arc

She closed the door. Soft. No slam, no finality, just the quiet click of someone retreating to process an earthquake she’d caused by accident.

I stood in the living room for a full ten seconds, staring at the spot where Hikaru Tanaka had hugged me voluntarily, without binding, in a sleep shirt thin enough to qualify as evidence, and then smiled at me like I’d handed her something she’d been missing for years.

The graft hummed in my chest. Warm and full and annoyingly smug, like it knew something I wasn’t ready to admit.

"Shut up," I said to the empty room.

The graft pulsed again. Warmer.

I walked to the kitchen, filled a glass from the tap, and drank it standing over the sink while my brain performed the emotional equivalent of clearing browser history. The water tasted like California pipes and copper. Hikaru’s green tea was still steaming on the counter beside her manga, which she’d left face-down in the universal language of someone who’d been interrupted at a good part.

I picked up the book. Flipped it over.

The cover featured a boy with a scar across his jaw and a girl hiding behind a pillar, peeking at him with hearts floating around her head. Chapter thirty-seven. The confession arc. She was at the confession arc. The Ice Prince of Obsidian, A-rank invisible death blade, heiress to the Tanaka hunting dynasty, was reading the confession arc in shojo manga at eleven PM in wire-frame reading glasses and no binding while drinking green tea and waiting for her dumbass roommate to come home from nearly dying.

I set the book back exactly where she’d left it, face-down, page saved. Touched nothing else. Didn’t even fix the bookmark that had slipped halfway out of the spine.

My phone buzzed with the ferocity of a wasps’ nest kicked down a staircase.

Belle: "Monroe. I swear to god if Vale murdered you I will kill him myself and take his car."

Naomi: "Are you home yet? Please just text me you’re home."

Addison: "I can still feel the ring you gave me. It’s warm. Does that mean you’re alive or does it mean the opposite. The internet is useless."

Aurora: (voice note, fourteen seconds, nothing but the sound of her laughing and then saying "you absolute disaster of a human being" followed by what sounded like a sword hitting something metal)

Jordan: "bro its midnight go to sleep or i will shadow bind your eyelids shut"

Misato: "Training. 0600. No excuses."

I typed a response to each of them.

To Belle: "Alive. Vale did not murder me. He bought me a burger and introduced me to his terrifying ex-girlfriend who wants to build me a weapon that runs on love. I’ll explain tomorrow. Don’t steal my jacket."

To Naomi: "I’m home. I’m standing in my kitchen. Hikaru made tea. I missed you."

To Addison: "The ring being warm means I’m alive. If it goes cold, manifest both scythes and come find my body. Also I still owe you three coffee jellies. Tuesday."

To Aurora: "I heard the sword. Please stop fighting guild members who make you angry. Save that energy for Saturday."

To Jordan: "Goodnight Jordan. Your shadow bind threat is noted and appreciated."

To Misato: "Yes ma’am."

I put the phone face-down on the counter and let the responses stack up unread. There would be time. Seven days and change of time, specifically, which was more than I’d had when I woke up in that amphitheater six weeks ago with seventy-two hours and a system that turned breast milk into survival currency.

Progress.

My body told me to sleep. Every muscle from my jaw to my heels had filed a formal petition for unconsciousness, complete with signatures and notarized testimony from several individual nerve clusters. The C-rank Endurance was working overtime to repair the leftover damage that Peterson’s healing hadn’t addressed, and I could feel the process happening beneath my skin like tiny construction crews rebuilding infrastructure after a natural disaster.

I brushed my teeth. Changed into basketball shorts. Fell face-first onto the bed.

The ceiling stared back at me. Same water stain. Same angry rabbit shape that looked like it wanted to bite anyone foolish enough to pet it.

"Hey," I said to it. "I killed a dimensional guardian with my bare hands and I’m pretty sure my roommate just fell in love with me by accident. What did you do this week."

The water stain did not respond. Good talk.

Sleep should have come instantly. My body was begging for it. My mana sat at forty-seven percent and climbing. The graft had settled into its post-feeding rhythm, steady and warm, not hungry for once, just content in the way a well-fed cat is content. Addison’s Silver essence had pushed me past the danger zone, and Yumi’s ring pulsed gently on my finger like a second heartbeat.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about Hikaru’s face.

Not the panic. Not the mortification of realizing she’d forgotten the binding. The part after that. The part where I told her she was allowed to exist in her own apartment without the wrap, and something broke open behind her red eyes that looked less like vulnerability and more like a door opening in a house she’d kept locked for three years.

And the smile. That smile. The one she hadn’t meant to let out, the one that escaped her face like a bird from a cage she forgot to close. Small and startled and real in a way that her entire Ice Prince persona was specifically designed to prevent.

The System didn’t send a notification. No devotion update. No attraction percentage climbing. Just the graft, pulsing in my chest, steady and warm, telling me in its own non-verbal language that something had shifted tonight in ways the numbers couldn’t capture yet.

I closed my eyes.

Vale’s voice played on loop in the back of my skull. The more people who genuinely care about whether you live or die, the stronger the field becomes. And Yumi, with her green eyes and copper hair and dead bird in a jar: the weapon strengthens through dimensional entanglement with your survival.

Every text message. Every comeback. Every protein bar slid under a door. Every forehead kiss and stolen jacket and three AM injury report and period at the end of a sentence from a girl who communicates through the spaces between words.

Data points. All of it. Feeding a weapon that didn’t exist yet, built by a woman I’d met six hours ago, designed to kill things that scared the entity responsible for my entire existence.

I thought about Naomi’s voice in my ear: "Don’t die before I collect."
