"Kid, it’s not that I let him go. That brat’s Blood Escape was just too fast."
The One-Eyed Snow Worm explained to Jiang Chen.
In truth, it had been a moment too slow, and Mr. Gu, having anticipated this, had already escaped.
It sensed that Jiang Chen was likely very displeased.
Jiang Chen, however, said calmly, "This isn’t your fault."
"Please return underground now."
He had no desire to interact with this One-Eyed Snow Worm any more than necessary.
After all, the One-Eyed Snow Worm was far too powerful, and he was genuinely afraid it might turn on him.
The One-Eyed Snow Worm immediately sensed Jiang Chen’s genuine displeasure over its failure to kill Mr. Gu.
It let out a dry laugh.
"So, uh... could I ask you for a favor?"
’If Jiang Chen uses that Magic of his to break the Spirit Manipulation Technique binding me, I’ll finally be free.’
How could the One-Eyed Snow Worm possibly pass up a chance to regain its freedom?
It could only plead with Jiang Chen, so it humbled itself.
Even when facing a mere boy like Jiang Chen with his weak Cultivation.
Jiang Chen, on the other hand, was surprised.
’This One-Eyed Snow Worm is definitely hiding a huge secret.’
However, he wasn’t overly curious.
Instead, he frowned. "Me, help you? How could I possibly help you?"
’What a joke. I’m just a Martial Cultivator with Martial Master Cultivation. How could I possibly help an expert at the Martial God level?’
In response, the One-Eyed Snow Worm sent a telepathic message to Jiang Chen: "If I say you can, you can."
"I just sensed that Magic you have. It’s incredibly powerful."
"Furthermore, a seal has been placed on me, and only your type of Magic can help me break it."
At this, the One-Eyed Snow Worm was clearly very excited, eagerly anticipating Jiang Chen’s help.
"As long as you help me break this seal, you can ask for anything you want."
Its expression was unreadable, but its tone was full of bravado.
Of course, if the One-Eyed Snow Worm weren’t trapped here, its power would make it one of the absolute top masters in the Lower Realm. Very few could threaten it.
The offer was incredibly tempting.
But Jiang Chen fell silent, pondering.
’After all, the One-Eyed Snow Worm’s secret might be connected to that catastrophe the other Snow Worms mentioned.’
The stakes were too high.
And Jiang Chen was no fool.
Setting aside the question of whether he could even control the One-Eyed Snow Worm after breaking the seal... if it went berserk, an unsealed One-Eyed Snow Worm would probably kill him on the spot. Without the seal to act upon, his Spirit Art would be useless.
The critical question was whether breaking the seal would unleash the prophesied catastrophe.
Jiang Chen didn’t dare take that risk.
Finally, after a moment of flickering uncertainty in his eyes,
he said in a low voice, "I think I’ll pass. We can discuss this again in the future."
He refused. He had no other choice.
After all, to break the seal without knowing the full truth and potentially cause a disaster... that was a responsibility Jiang Chen could not bear.
’There must be a very good reason why this One-Eyed Snow Worm was sealed here in the first place.’
When the One-Eyed Snow Worm heard Jiang Chen’s refusal, it nearly flew into a rage.
It secretly ground its teeth in frustration at Jiang Chen.
’How desperately I want to escape and be free!’
In the end, the Snow Worm tried to entice him with rewards once more.
But Jiang Chen rejected every offer, remaining completely unmoved.
Seeing it had no other choice, the Snow Worm knew it couldn’t win Jiang Chen’s trust right away. "Fine," it said, resigned. "Just don’t forget about me."
"When you’ve made up your mind, come back here and help me break the seal."
With that, the One-Eyed Snow Worm slowly descended from the sky, eventually vanishing into the earth below.
It knew Jiang Chen wasn’t so easily deceived.
Jiang Chen pondered to himself.
’Why would an Ancient Beast like this be sealed beneath Guyue City?’
He couldn’t unravel the mystery just yet.
"Jiang Chen..."
Just then, an excited cry rang out.
Before Jiang Chen could even react, a fragrant scent washed over him as a warm body threw itself into his arms.
Jiang Chen was completely stunned.
Taking a closer look, he was astonished.
"JinLing?"
It was JinLing from the Warring States Mercenary Corps.
Right then, JinLing’s two fair, slender arms were wound tightly around his neck.
Her entire body was pressed against his as she held him in a death grip.
The position couldn’t have been more intimate.
Jiang Chen was completely caught off guard.
He was too stunned to react.
"Jiang Chen, I never knew you were so amazing!"
"Jiang Chen, it’s me, Niu Tuo!"
"Master!"
Soon, Zhan Yang, Niu Tuo, and Lu Beifeng from the Warring States Mercenary Corps all ran over, their faces beaming as they looked at Jiang Chen.
But with JinLing still clinging to his neck, Jiang Chen felt incredibly awkward.
"Uh..."
Jiang Chen shot a pleading look at Zhan Yang.
Zhan Yang, however, seemed to have expected this. He said in a calm tone, "My sister was very worried about you."
His words clearly voiced what was on JinLing’s mind.
Zhan Yang also didn’t seem to mind the idea of Jiang Chen and JinLing getting closer, making no move to intervene.
Niu Tuo and Lu Beifeng both broke into mischievous grins.
Jiang Chen gave JinLing’s delicate back a helpless pat.
He gave a wry smile. "Miss, there are a lot of people around. Could you let go for now?"
Only then did JinLing reluctantly disentangle herself from Jiang Chen’s arms.
Her face was flushed bright red.
She pouted. "Jiang Chen, you big jerk! You scared us to death!"
Despite her words, Jiang Chen could clearly see in her eyes that her concern for him was genuine.
This left Jiang Chen at a complete loss.
After all, it had never once occurred to him that JinLing would develop feelings for him.
However, this clearly wasn’t the right place for a conversation.
"Jiang Chen, come with me. I know a quiet place."
Sensing Jiang Chen’s growing awkwardness, Zhan Yang was the first to speak up.
The group of five immediately left the ruins of the City Lord’s Mansion and made their way to a small, elegant courtyard.
With Jiang Chen’s departure, the crowd also began to disperse.
But one thing was clear: Jiang Chen’s fame had skyrocketed. This battle had made his name known throughout the entire Fire Sparrow Kingdom.
Needless to say, it wasn’t long before the Jiang Family in Hanwu City heard about the uproar Jiang Chen had caused in Guyue City by annulling his engagement.
This, however, put the Jiang Family on edge, causing them to live in daily fear of retaliation from the Fire Sparrow Kingdom.
As for Jiang Chen, he was now with the members of the Warring States Mercenary Corps.
The five of them sat in the courtyard.
"Jiang Chen, we were starting to think you wouldn’t show up."
"I can’t believe we actually ran into you here."
Zhan Yang said, his voice filled with emotion.
They had been through several life-or-death situations with Jiang Chen in the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain.
If it weren’t for Jiang Chen, they would never have made it out of the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain alive.
"That’s all in the past now."
"I was planning on looking for you guys, too."
"After all, I’m a member of the Warring States Mercenary Corps now, too."
Jiang Chen could finally relax.
The atmosphere was easy and relaxed with the members of the Warring States Mercenary Corps.
The only thing was JinLing’s perpetually fervent gaze, which still left Jiang Chen feeling a bit exasperated.
"Yeah, we never would have guessed you were the fiancé of Qin Muxue from the Qin Family."
"What a surprise."
The conversation turned back to Jiang Chen’s engagement with Qin Muxue.
JinLing was the most animated of all.
"Don’t you worry, Jiang Chen. There are plenty of other good women in the world. You’re so exceptional, that Qin Muxue wasn’t good enough for you at all."
"From now on, who knows how many good women will be lining up to marry you."
