"Stop!"
At the furious roar, everyone stopped in unison.
They all turned to look in the direction of the voice.
In the middle of the crowd stood a grim, vulture-like man with disheveled hair, dressed in a brown robe. His eyes burned with fury.
Many people gasped when they saw him.
"It’s Mr. Jiao, the captain of the Autumn Wind Mercenary Corps."
"So Mr. Jiao is here too. He’s a Martial King Fifth Heaven expert."
"Mr. Jiao, what’s going on? Why did everyone suddenly start attacking each other?"
For many, the situation still felt like a dream.
They had been swept into the battle without understanding why.
It was a nightmare. Several of their companions had already died.
Mr. Jiao was clearly a man of great prestige.
But right now, his face was dark. Combined with his naturally vulture-like features, he was an intimidating sight. When coupled with the aura of his Martial King Fifth Heaven cultivation, almost no one could stand against his presence.
Mr. Jiao roared, "You bastards! You started killing without even knowing the reason! I’m the one who wants to know what’s going on!"
"I’ve lost several of my brothers!"
At his feet, several members of his Autumn Wind Mercenary Corps lay in pools of their own blood, already drained dry.
This senseless slaughter had come too suddenly.
He was furious.
"The people at the front attacked first! I don’t know what happened either. I thought enemies were charging us, so I just started fighting back."
"Damn it, I’ve lost a few brothers too! What the hell is going on?"
Suddenly, everyone began to demand an explanation.
Soon, one of the people at the very front pointed ahead and said, "There’s a pit up there! Everyone who went in died!"
"You people in the back, stop pushing! If you keep pushing, we’ll fight you to the death! We’re about to die here, so why should we care about your lives?"
After a round of questioning, everyone finally understood the situation.
Although there was treasure ahead, there was also a Deadman’s Pit.
This Deadman’s Pit blocked everyone’s path. Whether they fell in or tried to fly over, they were all devoured by it.
Mr. Jiao and several other experts stared at the Deadman’s Pit before them.
The blood in the pit was constantly rising. It was already ninety percent full, just shy of the brim.
That blood was entirely from martial cultivators.
Mr. Jiao’s face was ashen. The blood of his mercenary team’s members was clearly mixed in there.
"Are you sure you can’t fly over it?"
Mr. Jiao’s eyes gleamed as he stared at the silver-glowing coffin on the other side.
For now, however, he didn’t risk it.
"Positive. No one can fly over the Deadman’s Pit."
"Everyone who tried to jump over it died."
Many had witnessed those martial cultivators attempt to leap across the Deadman’s Pit, only to fall in. Now, they were all terrified and didn’t dare to get close to it.
The Deadman’s Pit was incredibly bizarre.
Seeing this, Mr. Jiao clearly hesitated.
Even Xiao Jun, captain of the Black Demon Mercenary Corps, looked a little worse for wear.
After all, during the chaos, he had focused on protecting his team members, but he had still lost several people.
"Mr. Jiao, there’s something wicked about this Deadman’s Pit, isn’t there?"
"Look, that coffin up ahead must contain the so-called treasure from the Lin Family Ancestral Tomb, right?"
Xiao Jun said, pointing at the coffin before them.
A hint of desire flickered in his eyes.
But his instincts told him that this Deadman’s Pit was dangerously strange.
Even now, the blood at everyone’s feet was still flowing continuously toward the Deadman’s Pit.
The passage was clearly sloped, with the Deadman’s Pit at the lowest point, so any blood from higher ground could only flow into it.
Mr. Jiao’s expression was contemplative.
Suddenly, he asked, "Who dares to make an attempt?"
With the situation temporarily stabilized and the chaos subsided, many high-level martial cultivators had gathered before the Deadman’s Pit. They stared at the pit and the coffin on the other side, their faces etched with hesitation.
"Let me try."
Finally, a martial cultivator at the Martial Master Peak of Nine Heavens boldly stepped forward.
He addressed the crowd, "I’ll be the first to try. But if I get the treasure, none of you can fight me for it."
The crowd exchanged glances. Mr. Jiao nodded. "Of course. We swear we won’t fight you for any treasure you obtain."
"Go on and try then."
A look of triumph immediately appeared in the martial cultivator’s eyes.
’It’s just a five-meter-wide pit,’ he thought. ’I can leap over it in a single bound.’
’It’ll be effortless.’
With that, he crouched and suddenly sprang forward, leaping toward the other side like a fish trying to pass through the dragon gate.
Many people held their breath.
Their eyes were glued to him.
WHOOSH!
The martial cultivator shot into the air above the Deadman’s Pit.
He was just about to cross it.
But at that exact moment, a pulling force surged up from the Deadman’s Pit below.
It yanked at him violently.
"Oh no!"
he cried out in alarm.
But his body suddenly plunged, dropping straight into the blood-filled Deadman’s Pit.
SPLASH!
With just a dull splash, the martial cultivator at the Martial Master Peak of Nine Heavens vanished into the bloody water.
He seemed to struggle for a few moments, trying to get out.
But he couldn’t escape. A short while later, a few bubbles surfaced in the Deadman’s Pit, and then the martial cultivator was gone completely, not even bones remained.
HISS...
Even a Martial King Expert like Mr. Jiao sucked in a sharp breath of cold air.
A master at the Martial Master Peak of Nine Heavens had vanished into the pool of blood just like that.
As for the martial cultivators who had seen the Deadman’s Pit before, they grew even more terrified.
They knew the Deadman’s Pit had been empty before, and now it was almost full of blood.
A thick, metallic stench of blood filled the air, and the atmosphere seemed to grow even colder and more sinister.
Many people took deep breaths.
Xiao Jun said in a grave tone, "It seems this place is truly bizarre."
"We need to be extremely wary of this Deadman’s Pit."
Someone in the back said, "If we can’t cross this Deadman’s Pit, does that mean we’ll never get the treasure on the other side?"
In truth, many still held out hope for the treasure.
It was their goal for this trip, after all.
Mr. Jiao took a few deep breaths and asked again, "Are there any other Martial King Experts willing to give it a try?"
The area fell silent.
As the crowd quieted down, Jiang Chen and Murong Xiangming, who were at the back, slowly squeezed their way in.
They appeared near the Deadman’s Pit.
"Hm?"
"A Deadman’s Pit?"
Jiang Chen’s expression changed the moment he saw it.
But just then, a Martial King Expert suddenly stepped out and declared loudly, "Let me try! I refuse to believe I can’t even fly over a small pit like this."
"If I can’t fly over it today, I’ll be a disgrace to all Martial King Experts!"
He was right. The Deadman’s Pit wasn’t very large. Ordinarily, even a regular Martial Artist could easily jump over it.
As for a Martial King Expert, they could walk on air, so they paid the Deadman’s Pit no mind at all.
Seeing this, Jiang Chen immediately tried to stop him. "Brother, you mustn’t!"
His mind raced. He thought about the Deadman’s Pit, and his thoughts went even further.
’I have to stop him.’
But the Martial King Expert sneered, "A bunch of cowards. Just watch me."
"Everyone, step aside."
Jiang Chen opened his mouth to speak, but then closed it. Although he had a theory, he still needed to confirm it, so he decided to say no more.
The Martial King Expert stepped out from the crowd.
He was a Martial King Expert, after all. Someone different from the rest.
