"What’s she doing here?"
"I don’t know. Probably came here to die."
"Aren’t you guys going to call her Beast Mother?"
"Why should we? She’s useless now. Not worthy of me calling her that."
The Phoenix Clan was born arrogant. It was no wonder they could speak like that.
Chu Liangyu felt a little annoyed. ’These brats change their tune way too fast.’
Before, when they saw her, they all called her "Beast Mother" so sweetly. Now...
It left a disgusting taste in Chu Liangyu’s mouth. ’Just look at the kind of trash she’d given birth to.’
"Beast... What do you think you’re doing?"
The bear cub coughed, swallowing the words "Beast Mother" before they could escape his lips.
"I heard you were fighting. I came to join the commotion."
"Huh?"
"I’m on the rabbits’ side. If I beat you, this will all be over, right?"
The bear cub nodded dumbly. "Right, yeah."
Clenching her fists, Chu Liangyu felt the power of the Crystal Core she had absorbed into her body.
The power made her feel energetic, eager to try it out.
"Then let’s begin."
Her eyes gleamed with an unusual light as she charged toward the bear cub.
Surprise flashed across the bear cub’s face, but he quickly reacted, swiping his claws in a counterattack.
The two collided with a dull thud.
The immense force knocked the bear cub back half a step, while Chu Liangyu, merely rubbing her tingling fist, hadn’t moved an inch.
"Are you even trying? You can’t even beat that piece of trash!"
"Go on, get her!"
The bear cub was shocked. Only he knew how much power had been behind that punch.
’It seems this seemingly weak Beast Mother has some skill after all.’
Composing himself, he took the initiative and attacked Chu Liangyu.
This time, he was smart enough not to trade blows. Using his larger size, he threw his entire body at Chu Liangyu.
He intended to pin her down completely. The move was so sudden, there was no time to dodge.
Chu Liangyu focused, gathering all her strength into her fist.
As a large shadow fell over her, she threw her punch at the perfect moment.
BAM...
The bear cub flew several meters into the air, and the dust kicked up by his landing made everyone choke and cough.
The coughing subsided, and the scene fell silent.
The big lug on the ground was motionless. Chu Liangyu hesitated for a moment before walking over.
She nudged his stomach with her foot. "Are you still alive?"
The bear cub spat out a mouthful of blood and quickly covered his head, begging for mercy.
"I’m alive, I’m alive! Spare me, Beast Mother! I was wrong!"
The bear cub knew what was good for him; the moment he realized he couldn’t win, he admitted defeat.
Chu Liangyu, on the other hand, was surprised. She had used eighty percent of her strength, yet the bear cub had only coughed up some blood.
’The Bear Clan Beastmen really live up to their reputation for being tough and thick-skinned.’
But as angry as she had been, she hadn’t intended to kill him.
They were all just young cubs with impressionable minds. Chu Liangyu’s display of force had thoroughly intimidated them.
"Alright, since I won, I’ll be taking these rabbits back with me. Any problem with that?"
"No problem, no problem at all! After you, Beast Mother."
Rabbits in combat were different from their usual selves; they grew several times larger, making it impossible for Chu Liangyu to carry them all at once.
But luckily, there were many rabbits, and they all helped out. It wasn’t long before they were back at their dwelling.
Night was falling, and Wen Yan had just returned from hunting.
"Female Master, look! I brought back a lot of prey today, enough to..."
Wen Yan’s words died in his throat when he saw the ground covered in blood-soaked rabbit cubs, the joy on his face not yet having had time to fade.
"What happened?"
"They got into a fight with the bear cubs."
But no one had expected it to be this severe. Not a single one of the rabbit cubs brought back had survived.
After checking on all the young, Wen Yan’s eyes turned red in an instant.
He was like a deflated ball, his voice filled with self-blame. "It’s all because I’m too weak."
Perhaps the sheer number of dead cubs was too great a blow for him.
Chu Liangyu felt the air around him grow somber, so she could only pat his shoulder in comfort.
She silently helped him handle the rabbits. But the moment her hand touched one, the panel appeared again.
[DING—Tradeable item detected!]
[Item: Twenty-three freshly deceased, oversized rabbits!]
[Value: Five High Level Crystal Cores]
[Trading Plane: Apocalypse]
Chu Liangyu’s silence was deafening. Although she coveted the High Level Crystal Cores, she wouldn’t go so far as to sell her own cubs to get them.
[Choose to trade?]
"No."
Faced with survival versus morality, sometimes such things were worthless.
But at that time, Chu Liangyu hadn’t been pushed to the brink yet; she hadn’t abandoned her bottom line as a human being.
"Alright, this was just an accident. Try to look on the bright side. There are other cubs that need you to take care of them."
Wen Yan, who had been keeping his head down, finally looked up and suddenly gave Chu Liangyu a smile.
Unlike before, this smile was filled with an unsettling strangeness.
Chu Liangyu was startled and subconsciously took two steps back.
"That’s right. The Female Master is correct. I still have to take care of the remaining young. I can’t let anything happen to me."
"Mm, it’s good that you’ve thought it through."
Wen Yan had brought back a lot of food this time, and Chu Liangyu was allotted three portions.
She ate two, which left her half-full, and used the other one to trade for an Intermediate Crystal Core.
Chu Liangyu guessed that because she had absorbed one before, the effect wasn’t as good as the first time.
But she could still feel her power increase. Other than that, it didn’t seem to have any other effect on her.
Just as when she had woken up, she was surrounded by a group of little rabbit cubs.
Chu Liangyu’s gaze softened as she reached out to stroke the rabbits’ smooth fur.
She had slept for two days and was now full of energy, not the least bit sleepy.
Suddenly, Chu Liangyu’s eyes met a pair of round rabbit eyes. Unlike the other young, these eyes held a look of adoration.
"Little one, why are you looking at me?"
Seemingly not expecting Chu Liangyu to notice her, the little rabbit looked uncertainly at her siblings.
Chu Liangyu found this amusing and scooped her into her arms. "Stop looking around. I’m talking to you."
"I-I... I just think the Beast Mother is very beautiful."
"Little one, let me ask you a question."
The little rabbit nuzzled her palm affectionately. "What does the Beast Mother want to know?"
"Are the bear cubs always this vicious when they fight?"
"No, Beast Mother. They’re only like this with us rabbit cubs. They wouldn’t dare do it to the other young."
’Just as I thought. These brats know who to pick on.’
"Then what does your Beast Father usually do?"
"We didn’t used to have so many brothers and sisters die. The Beast Father would be sad, but he’d just tell us to stay away from them and protect ourselves."
Chu Liangyu sighed. She hadn’t realized their lives were so stifled.
She recalled when she had first arrived in this world, desperate to survive.
She had hastily had cubs with Wen Yan, but because his strength was lacking...
...and Chu Liangyu couldn’t find anyone better at the time, she could only try to make up for it in numbers.
This led to a situation where the number of rabbit cubs far exceeded that of any other young.
But she had never considered how to feed so many cubs.
She had dumped all these problems onto Wen Yan. It was no wonder he hadn’t come looking for her again later on.
"Beast Mother? Why is your face so red?"
Chu Liangyu coughed. "It’s nothing. It’s just a little hot."
In truth, she wasn’t hot at all. She was blushing from embarrassment.
