Done Breeding: Now I Rule the Beastworld
Chapter 56 - 55: The Holy Tree WithersChu Liangyu led the group back to the dilapidated house. Just as she was about to step inside, a dark figure came crashing toward her.
The dark figure appeared out of nowhere. Chu Liangyu barely dodged, but couldn’t avoid a bump.
She rolled her shoulder and, feeling nothing amiss, simply frowned as she watched the figure retreat into the distance.
Internally, however, she couldn’t help but grumble, ’What is wrong with today? Why is everyone trying to run into me? Has the whole world gone crazy?’
After Cang Yu’s emotions stabilized, the dark clouds scattered and the rain stopped.
But the pockmarked ground was full of puddles, and the person moved so fast they didn’t seem to care about the water splashing onto them.
"Sister Liangyu, I have great news!"
Xiong Jiaojiao ran out excitedly, grabbing Chu Liangyu by the shoulders with a look of pure joy.
Her excitement was contagious, and the flicker of annoyance in Chu Liangyu’s heart vanished. A little puzzled, she asked, "What is it?"
"I met one of my people! He’s inside."
For the sake of survival, the Wood Spirit Clan didn’t gather in one place. They would typically disguise themselves as ordinary Beastmen and live among them.
Because of this, unless one of them revealed their identity, even their own kin wouldn’t recognize them.
There was one exception, however: when one of them was at the Elf King Level, they could directly sense their kin nearby.
"Oh? That’s wonderful. You two should talk," Chu Liangyu said, happy for her. She urged her to go spend more time with her kinsman.
But Xiong Jiaojiao’s previously happy expression suddenly fell, her voice full of disappointment. "But... there’s also bad news."
"What is it? Tell me. If there’s anything I can do to help, I will."
"My kinsman said the Holy Tree has started to wither! To slow it down, it needs an Elf King to transfer energy into it."
Chu Liangyu understood. "Do you want me to go back with you?"
"But... Sister Liangyu, you still have to find a new territory. I’m worried..."
Xiong Jiaojiao felt she was asking too much, and her gaze was filled with clear apprehension as she looked at Chu Liangyu.
"Finding a new tribe won’t happen overnight. I’ll go with you to save the Holy Tree first."
The Holy Tree was the birthplace of the Wood Spirit Clan. Without it, the Wood Spirit Clan would gradually face extinction.
Chu Liangyu knew how to prioritize.
Xiong Jiaojiao’s kinsman hadn’t expected so many people to come along, and his face was etched with deep wariness.
It made sense. The Wood Spirit Clan’s ability to cultivate the Desperate Fruit was as tempting to outsiders as Tang Seng’s flesh was to demons. His caution was only natural.
Xiong Jiaojiao gently reassured him, "Don’t worry. They’re all trustworthy friends. It will be fine."
"Sister Liangyu, let me introduce you. This is Cheng Miao."
Chu Liangyu nodded, trying her best not to intimidate him. "Hello, I’m Chu Liangyu."
After a round of brief introductions, the group set off for the Holy Tree’s location.
After leaving Ten Thousand Beasts City, they arrived at the foot of a verdant mountain.
Cheng Miao felt around a certain spot, and a passageway of black stone steps appeared at their feet.
It was rather similar to the mechanisms of the Golden Eagle Tribe. Cheng Miao led the way, and they all entered the passage.
Though there was no candlelight in the passage, a mysterious glow allowed them to see everything inside quite clearly.
They walked through the winding passage for a long time until Chu Liangyu felt a breeze stir the hair by her ear. She realized they were about to emerge.
And just as she thought, a few steps later an opening appeared before them.
Outside the entrance, the sunlight was bright, and those whose eyes hadn’t yet adjusted subconsciously shielded them with their hands.
A few birds chirped, a gentle breeze carried the scent of flowers to their noses, and colorful butterflies fluttered all around.
In a season when all things should have been withering, this place was as vibrant and full of life as spring.
A tree in the distance was immeasurably thick, its branches covering a vast area.
Beneath the tree, in its dappled shade, stood five people.
Without exception, all of them had pointed ears, and three of them even had wings.
They were looking at the Holy Tree with solemn expressions.
Chu Liangyu noticed that beginning from the Holy Tree’s outermost perimeter, the branches showed clear signs of turning yellow and withering.
The tree bore pale blue, apple-shaped fruits. As the sunlight fell upon them, they seemed almost transparent against the sky.
Chu Liangyu didn’t need Xiong Jiaojiao’s introduction to guess what they were.
Just like with the Beastmen, those were the unborn young of the Wood Spirit Clan.
"Who are you?"
The Elf King who spoke had a white beard that reached his toes, and his gaze was sharp as he sized up the newcomers.
Xiong Jiaojiao reverted to her Elf form and stepped forward. "I heard the Holy Tree was in distress and came to help," she said respectfully. "These are my friends. They won’t reveal anything about us."
Generally, those who reached the Elf King Level were either very old or possessed exceptional talent.
For Xiong Jiaojiao to be an Elf King at such a young age, she was clearly the latter.
The elder’s expression softened. He examined Xiong Jiaojiao closely and said, "You are very impressive. You haven’t brought shame upon the Wood Spirit Clan."
"Elder, let’s not delay. We should begin now," Cheng Miao urged, interrupting their conversation.
Only then did Chu Liangyu realize that Cheng Miao, now in his true form, was also an Elf King.
She had assumed he wasn’t anyone powerful because he was so quiet. It turned out she had underestimated him.
Realizing how short-sighted she’d been, Chu Liangyu couldn’t help but blush.
But she quickly composed herself, making a mental note: ’The Beast World is vast, and it’s full of all kinds of people. I must never underestimate anyone based on their outward appearance.’
After all, there was no guarantee she wouldn’t pay the price for such a mistake one day.
"Young lady, this will consume a great deal of your energy. Are you sure about this?"
The energy expenditure would directly impact her abilities as an Elf, and could even cause a sharp drop in her power.
But Xiong Jiaojiao’s expression was resolute, without a hint of hesitation. "I was born from the Holy Tree. This is what I must do."
"Good child."
A glint of tears seemed to flash in the elder’s eyes. He said no more, turning to focus on transferring his energy.
Chu Liangyu watched, inexplicably moved.
As everyone’s energy flowed into the Holy Tree, Chu Liangyu felt the tree seem to stretch.
A faint sigh seemed to echo in her ears, surprising her.
’This Holy Tree... It can’t be alive, can it?’
’No, that’s not quite right. It’s conscious!’
Chu Liangyu was startled by her own speculation and took a moment to compose herself.
’Then again,’ she thought, ’if the Wood Spirit Clan can grow from fruit into humanoid form, it’s only natural for the Holy Tree to be conscious.’
The Holy Tree seemed to be revitalized, but the faces of those transferring energy began to turn pale—a clear sign of exhaustion.
Worry welled up inside Chu Liangyu. She had no idea how much energy the Holy Tree needed to recover from its decline.
’Energy...’
’Since it needs energy, I wonder if the Holy Tree can absorb power from Crystal Cores.’
She had previously traded surplus food for ten Mid Tier Crystal Cores and later acquired five more in exchange for other items, giving her a total of fifteen.
Without any reluctance, Chu Liangyu took them all out.
Since the tree was conscious, Chu Liangyu decided to place them directly at its base.
Chu Liangyu stared without blinking, eager to see if the Holy Tree would accept this kind of energy.
