Done Breeding: Now I Rule the Beastworld
Chapter 69 - 68: The Human Heart is a Complex ThingThe two locations were too far apart. It would take the tribes ten days to complete the migration.
Furthermore, they had to transport their food stores, so the journey was unlikely to be a smooth one.
On Chu Liangyu’s end, her task was to build more houses, prepare cellars, and store food before they arrived.
They certainly had strength in numbers, and what’s more, Chu Liangyu and Xiong Jiaojiao already had experience.
With a few of them coordinating with the Wood Spirit Clan, they could build a hundred houses in a single day.
Of course, this was all done after the few of them had mostly recovered.
Chu Liangyu had previously found herbs to help restore their Primordial Energy. Coupled with their own ability to accelerate the herbs’ growth, they had more than enough.
They even began cultivating this type of herb, along with the ones used for body tempering.
Having specialists care for them made all the difference. Compared to the one Chu Liangyu had originally produced, hers looked practically malnourished.
In contrast, the herbs under their care were all lush and verdant, emitting a faint medicinal aroma.
But as time went on, the weather grew increasingly cold.
Xiong Jiaojiao had taken off her dress made of grass and leaves, replacing it with thick beast hides.
Even so, she still felt cold.
She would rub her hands together from time to time, looking enviously at Chu Liangyu, who seemed completely unaffected by the cold.
"Sister Liangyu, the weather is changing so quickly. I have a feeling this winter is going to be a rough one."
"You’re not wrong," Chu Liangyu said, her brow furrowed as she gazed at the rolling mountain range.
’I wonder how things are going with Feng Qiwu. At his speed, he should have been back by now.’
Sensing the dampness in the air, Chu Liangyu’s expression grew even heavier.
’I promised Chi Yizhong I’d go back to the sea with him, and that time is only a few days away.’
’A promise is a promise and I can’t go back on it. But I still haven’t received any news about the migration, and it’s making me anxious.’
"It’s all right. If you can’t get away, I can go back by myself," Chi Yizhong said in a calm voice, reaching out to smooth her furrowed brow.
Chu Liangyu shook her head. She wasn’t going to break her promise just because he was being considerate. "I gave you my word," she said, "and I intend to keep it."
"But there’s still no news from them. What if something has gone wrong?"
"We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it." After a moment’s thought, Chu Liangyu added, "Their strength and wisdom are considerable. They should be able to handle it."
But she had forgotten that the hearts of people are a complex thing.
----
Meanwhile, after Feng Qiwu delivered the message, the Xihe Tribe found itself polarized.
Winter was about to set in, and to be on the safe side, many people were unwilling to migrate.
Others were more optimistic, believing that anywhere their leader was would be fine.
Besides, they were certain that if they just hurried, they could arrive before the first snow.
"Elder Jin, we should really reconsider this. We have a lot of young ones here. What if they can’t handle the journey and die on the way?"
After Chu Liangyu became their collective chieftain, Jinling had stepped down to the position of Elder, temporarily managing the tribe.
’To be honest, Jinling wasn’t keen on migrating right now either. But Chu Liangyu’s message was for them to hurry over, and he couldn’t just ignore it.’
’But if that was the case, he had to figure out how to persuade his tribespeople.’
But he didn’t know what to say. Unable to decide, he looked over at Hu Qiumu.
Hu Qiumu, however, was calm. After everyone had had their say, an eerie silence fell over the crowd.
Only then did he speak up. "First, we made an agreement. Since we’ve accepted Chu Liangyu as our chieftain, we must obey her commands. Furthermore, I believe she must have her reasons for making this decision, so I hope everyone will follow her arrangements."
"Second, if there’s anyone who really doesn’t want to go, then stay here. The tribe will consider you no longer part of it. The choice is yours."
"Finally, I suggest you all think it over quickly. We leave this afternoon."
Without the tribe’s protection, surviving the harsh winter would be no easy feat.
At this thought, most people chose to migrate with the group.
Still, some felt that migrating now was too risky.
"Well, we contributed to the food in the cellars. You have to leave some for us, right?"
Someone in the crowd brought up the distribution of food. They believed that with that support, plus whatever they could hunt before the snow, they should have no problem surviving the winter.
But they were overlooking one thing. While sufficient food was one part of surviving the winter safely...
...they also had to guarantee they wouldn’t be attacked by wild beasts, or have other Beastmen come to plunder their food.
It could be said that those who held such thoughts were clever, but not by much.
A meaningful smile touched the corners of Hu Qiumu’s lips as he nodded. "Don’t worry, we’ll leave some food for you."
Hu Qiumu couldn’t be bothered to persuade these fools who seemed so intent on seeking death. He just let them be.
Jinling breathed a secret sigh of relief. ’It was a good thing he wasn’t the one who had to say all that.’
’Otherwise, he would have offended the tribespeople to no end.’
’Looking at it now, Chu Liangyu’s decision to have them stay behind had been truly wise.’
Jinling couldn’t help but be amazed. ’Chu Liangyu must be the type to see ten steps ahead for every one she takes.’
Compared to their situation, Xiong Xianhui’s side was surprisingly unified.
When Xiong Xianhui announced the decision to migrate, no one objected at all, simply declaring, "We’ll go wherever the chieftain goes!"
It had to be said, the single-minded loyalty of the Bear Clan was rather enviable.
At the thought of seeing Chu Liangyu soon, Xiong Xianhui was even more eager to get going than the rest of them.
Just as the discussion on their side concluded, Xiong Xianhui was already ready to go with his clan members in tow.
He walked over and clapped Hu Qiumu on the shoulder, his face beaming with a brilliant smile. "Are we leaving now?"
Hu Qiumu and Jinling looked at him silently, feeling a strange and unsettling pang of jealousy.
"We haven’t finished packing. Wait a little longer."
Xiong Xianhui let out a sound of surprise. "Ah," he commented, "it seems your management isn’t quite up to par."
Even someone as insensitive as Xiong Xianhui could feel the two men’s hostile gazes on him after he said that.
"Er, on second thought, I feel like our own preparations might not be complete either. I’ll go back and double-check. You guys carry on, carry on."
"I’ll leave the migration to you all. I have to get back and report to the Female Master. See ya!"
Seeing that matters were more or less settled, Feng Qiwu transformed into his beast form, preparing to leave.
But Hu Qiumu still remembered the underhanded trick he had pulled before.
There was no way they were going to let him get away that easily. The three of them exchanged a look.
The next instant, they attacked Feng Qiwu in unison.
The attack was so sudden that Feng Qiwu was completely caught off guard. Before he could even take flight, their blows landed squarely on him.
"Hey! What do you think you’re doing?"
Feng Qiwu was horrified. He had long forgotten his past transgression and thought the three were trying to rebel.
Two fists are no match for six. If it came to a real fight, Feng Qiwu stood no chance.
They were clearly holding back. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have had the chance to speak—he would have been killed on the spot.
"If the Female Master finds out you’re treating me like this, you’re all finished!"
Feng Qiwu winced in pain. Pinned to the ground, a deep sense of humiliation washed over him, and his words became sharp.
