Cining Palace.
Nanny Shui earnestly urged Empress Dowager Mo to eat: "...Your Highness, you’re at this age, why are you being stubborn like a child? If the Prince knew, wouldn’t he be even more upset?"
Having accompanied her for many years, she dared to say such things. Would others dare to call Empress Dowager Mo stubborn?
Empress Dowager Mo hadn’t eaten or drunk for a whole day and night. Her lips were dry, her voice hoarse: "Why can’t I be stubborn? They always say ’old child, old child.’ I’ve been dignified and proper all my life, now that I’m old, can’t I be willful for once?"
Nanny Shui was momentarily speechless, at a loss between tears and laughter. These words sounded like a child’s pout.
Just as she was about to say something, it was announced from outside that His Majesty had arrived.
"I’m tired, I won’t see him. The Emperor is unfilial, let him kneel outside," Empress Dowager Mo turned her body away, with her back to Nanny Shui.
Nanny Shui shook her head helplessly and quickly went out to greet him.
Emperor Yan felt an inexplicable urge to laugh after hearing Nanny Shui’s words, a sense of softness in his heart.
Is this her true character?
But at such a moment.
The slight smile on Emperor Yan’s face faded as he stepped inside. He is the Son of Heaven, the emperor—there is no place in this world he cannot go.
"Your Majesty..." Nanny Shui tried to stop him.
Emperor Yan looked at her coldly: "What, does Nanny Shui also want to oppose me?" After a pause, he continued: "You’ve served the Royal Mother for many years, perhaps it’s time to consider retirement?"
Nanny Shui’s face turned pale.
Emperor Yan snorted and walked into the bedchamber.
Empress Dowager Mo lay on her side with her back to him, her waterfall-like long hair spreading behind her. She maintained herself well, her hair still entirely black. Years of privilege and a balanced diet kept her figure slim and graceful, no less than the concubines in the harem.
Indeed, she was only five years his senior, yet at such an age, she became his mother. It was both laughable and hateful.
"How long will Royal Mother continue this?" Emperor Yan stood by the couch.
Empress Dowager Mo kept her eyes closed, silent.
"With this behavior, have you not considered how difficult it is for your son? All the ministers are accusing me of being unfilial. Have you never thought of your son?"
Empress Dowager Mo suddenly turned over, propping herself up slightly, and sneered: "If I hadn’t thought of you, I wouldn’t just be fasting—I would have moved into the dungeon to accompany Ah Jiu."
Emperor Yan’s face darkened, his eyes locked with hers.
"So, you’re not willing to yield at all, Royal Mother?"
"What is there to gain by yielding? To continue living in this luxurious cage? My own son is still in prison!" Empress Dowager Mo closed her eyes again, saying: "Moreover, if this filthy body decays, what of it? I don’t care for this place; death holds no fear for me."
The tone carried an immeasurable sorrow and desolation.
Emperor Yan’s heart suddenly tightened, as if gripped by her hands, he gritted his teeth: "Does Royal Mother wish to leave me?"
He stepped forward, grabbing Empress Dowager Mo’s hand: "Answer me."
"How dare you!" Empress Dowager Mo glared coldly at him.
"Royal Mother, do not be like Ah Jiu, challenging my authority. I will kill him!"
"Go ahead and decree it," Empress Dowager Mo laughed softly: "If Ah Jiu loses his life, I will accompany him in death."
"You!"
Emperor Yan flung her hand away.
Empress Dowager Mo stubbornly held his gaze.
"You’re just relying on the affection I have for you, feeling no fear." Emperor Yan suddenly spoke, turning away: "Fine, very well, you have won!"
He turned to leave, and Empress Dowager Mo watched him disappear, feeling as if all strength had left her body, softening back onto the couch.
