The great day of the Royal Sacrificial Ceremony, with the Son of Heaven personally attending, this time not held at the Royal Altar but at the Royal Temple, allowing the common folk to approach and witness the Son of Heaven’s demeanor; it could be said that it showered the people with divine grace.
No one could have expected that changes would occur during such a grand occasion and solemn ceremony.
The countless jubilant faces hailing the reign may not have anticipated that they were likely to perish in this spectacle, eternally separated from their families.
Emperor Yan didn’t foresee it either.
Everything happened so abruptly.
As the prolonged sound of the bell resonated, the auspicious time for the rites commenced. First, the Abbot Master and Minister of Rites presided over the opening, followed by Emperor Yan delivering official remarks celebrating Heaven’s prosperity and the people’s strength, then returned to the main hall for the sacrifice.
"Master, it’s someone from our house." Wufu and Mo Lan had arrived at the temple front when suddenly Xiao Qi pointed at someone and said.
Following his gesture, Wufu looked over and saw a pale-faced man clutching his chest and squeezing into the crowd, pursued by several others anxiously scanning around.
Her face changed, and she said to Chi Liu, "Quick, go help."
Xiao Qi and Mo Lan stood on either side of Wufu, vigilantly observing the surroundings.
Chi Liu slipped into the bustling crowd like a fish, and after a while, he dragged a man before Wufu.
Only then did Wufu see that the man dressed in dark clothing had his attire torn, revealing a wet patch of deep red, and a heavy scent of blood wafting over, with drops of blood dripping onto the white snow beneath, resembling bright red plums.
If not for Chi Liu holding him up, he probably would have collapsed.
The man saw Wufu and opened his mouth, "King..."
Chi Liu covered his mouth and said, "Call the Master."
"Master, quickly leave," the man said. "There’s a secret path under the main hall, filled with gunpowder. Hurry, leave now."
Wufu was startled, grabbing him, "How much?"
"A lot, very..." His eyes rolled, and he fell limply.
Chi Liu checked his breath and his face changed, "He’s gone."
"Master, we should leave now." Mo Lan protected Wufu and started moving back.
They were standing on an edge, just a little further into the flanking woods, and they could quickly escape.
Yet Wufu grasped her hand, looked at the crowd of dark heads, then at the main hall, and said, "We must disperse these people."
"Master, we cannot take the risk."
Wufu looked at Chi Liu and said, "Go to the end of the line and use Inner Strength to say that people are handing out money at Shanpeng."
Chi Liu frowned.
"Quickly!"
Chi Liu gritted his teeth and had to rush to the back, swiftly saying those words while taking off; indeed, the forward-pushing crowd upon hearing that began to look back.
There are too many people!
Wufu said, "Let’s also go help."
Meanwhile, in the main hall, Emperor Yan took the torch passed by Master Ping Yuan to ignite the enormous incense, which was as thick as a child’s arm.
As incense burned, smoke billowed.
Emperor Yan knelt on the prayer mat, with his sons, relatives, and officials following suit.
Master Ping Yuan began chanting scriptures.
"Your Majesty, please inform Heaven and burn the scriptures," a plain-faced monk handed over a stack of hand-copied scrolls.
After Emperor Yan took it, the monk stepped back several paces.
Emperor Yan held the scriptures over the candle flame and then slowly placed them into the Treasure Basin.
"Your Majesty, beware." Someone darted out and kicked the scripture from his hand.
Yet, a burning piece of paper still fell into the Treasure Basin.
Crackle, pop, bang!
The Treasure Basin exploded.
