" Okay, I’ll be right back! " said Katelyn as she left through a different entrance from the one they had used.
Katelyn was scanning her surroundings, her gaze sweeping every corner of the room. Even after pushing her first sense to a 300-meter radius, she felt no presence at all, not even daugrs.
’ This calm is a little suspicious... ’
" I’m not going to complain about it either. "
She turned back toward the room and saw Kristian slowly touching Pandora’s box.
" Hey, what are you doing? "
Kristian suddenly swayed, his fingers barely grazing the jar. He stumbled, and Katelyn instinctively lunged toward him.
She grabbed him by the arm, steadying him.
" Hm? Nothing... My head hurts, it’s awful. "
Katelyn sighed and held him up. " You must have overexerted your Chi... Rest for a minute. "
"No," Kristian replied, gently pushing her help away. His gaze had hardened. "It’s dangerous, we should quickly grab the Pandora’s Box and get out of here."
The young Dagon, who now seemed to feel much better than moments before, took on a serious expression.
" We came here for this, we have to make sure we don’t fail—"
A spear shot out of the darkness and hurtled straight at them. Katelyn reacted on instinct and gripped the shaft with a firm hand.
" Who dares attack the Sword Clan? "
" Who dares? Looks like some big fish from the Sword Clan just fell into my hands... "
Several figures emerged from the entrance, about twenty of them, and one stepped forward out of the shadows.
"I wanted to run into that bastard Daemon," he said, twirling his spear. "but instead I caught the heir and the bitch from House Summer... Fate is generous sometimes."
" That’s... "
" Kellen Strain, at your service..." Kellen made a mocking bow, then fixed his gaze on one of his underlings.
" What are you waiting for? Cut them down! "
Kristian felt anxiety knot his stomach. This ambush, he hadn’t seen it coming, and in an enclosed space like this, being outnumbered would cost them dearly, and fast.
"Stay behind me, Katelyn..." he began, drawing his two swords in a fluid motion despite his fatigue. "Young Master Kellen, it’s true our clans are rivals, but we have no quarrel—"
"Are you an idiot or are you doing this on purpose?" Katelyn cut him off, quickly drawing her rapier. "I don’t need you to protect me!"
She lunged before he could protest, her rapier tracing an arc of chi through the darkness. The first spear that came at her was deflected with a simple flick of the wrist, and she struck back in a flash, her blade slicing the spearman’s throat before he had time to retreat.
"Young Master Kristian," said Kellen, "I don’t know if you’re a fool, or naive, or maybe both? Our clans were never rivals, only enemies... And the Sword Clan made a grave mistake sending only the two of you. I’ll make sure you pay dearly for it."
Kristian gritted his teeth, dodging the strikes of three spearmen closing in around him. They were fast, their spears aiming for lethal points. He spun, his two swords tracing protective circles around him. One blade met the shaft of a spear, severed it clean, and Kristian used the opening to duck under a second attacker’s strike.
’ He’s not giving me a choice,’ he thought, feeling the Chi surge through his limbs.
Kellen was neither patient nor foolish. Against this kind of opponent, there would be no honorable duel. Using his troops as a shield remained the best option against someone capable of projecting Chi at range.
" Hold formation! Nobody give him an opening! " Kellen ordered.
His men immediately split into two groups, one surrounding Kristian in waves, the other converging on Katelyn.
Katelyn yanked a spear shaft, sending the unbalanced man stumbling forward, and drove her rapier into his back before he hit the ground. She activated her First Sense.
< Blade Perception. >
The world slowed around her. Two spearmen were already charging, one aiming for her legs, the other for her throat. She pivoted on the ball of her foot, the first spear slicing through empty air inches from her thigh, and caught the second with a reverse guard. She followed through with a thrust that ran clean through her attacker’s chest.
Meanwhile, Kristian faced a wall of men who took turns without ever tiring together. A first spearman charged, screaming, the point aimed at his flank. He pivoted, parried with one blade, sliced the man’s forearm with the other. A second man surged in from his right, exploiting the opening left by the first movement. Kristian had to break off his combo to block, his left blade striking the spear’s shaft, the shock traveling up to his shoulder.
Kellen watched, the fated spear strapped to his back.
" You, flank right. You, go for his legs. Never stand alone against him, he’ll cut you down one by one if you leave a gap. "
He gave orders, and his men executed them without hesitation. Kristian quickly understood the problem.
’ He always keeps a man between him and me. Never close enough to be hit, never far enough to let me breathe. He knows the range of my Emission. ’
Kristian stepped back to gain space, parried a spear strike, then countered with a combo of both blades that slit a man’s throat. Blood sprayed across the ground. He didn’t even have time to catch his breath before another spearman took the dead man’s place.
" They never stop... " he growled through clenched teeth. He who only wanted to neutralize them understood that in this situation, it was better to put them out of commission for good.
Katelyn kept thinning the ranks before her. She dodged a metal claw by ducking, spun to avoid a second strike, then drove her rapier into the neck of a man trying to take her from behind. The blade came out through his jaw, tearing away a piece of flesh. She finished off a wounded man with a pommel strike to the chest, shattering his sternum and piercing his heart.
