Nobody stepped off the lift.
Dirk crouched at the edge of the platform and studied the old drilling chamber. Dust covered most of the floor, but a shallow line near the gate showed where one slab had settled below the next. Beyond it, hairline cracks spread toward the broken machine in the center of the room.
The translucent creatures on the ceiling continued feeding.
There were nine that Dirk could see. Each had a flat body no larger than a dinner plate, six hooked legs, and a shell bright enough to reveal the blue mana moving inside it. They clung to the crystal with their heads pressed against the vein.
"The first three feet are solid." Dirk said. "After that, stay near the left wall. The center slab is holding up the debris, not the other way around."
Dain leaned over without placing any weight beyond the gate. "Can we cross one at a time?"
"Yes. Do not touch the drill frame."
Rod stepped down first. The stone held. He kept his axe low and moved along the wall until he reached the far side of the cracked section. Dain followed with his shield angled above him. Nessa crossed next, then Lana with Midnight watching from the opening of her pack.
Dirk came last.
The feeders did not react to boots. They reacted when Lana passed beneath the brightest part of the vein.
Three shells turned at once.
"Above Lana." Dirk said.
His first arrow struck the nearest creature through the thin joint beneath its head. It released the crystal and fell. The other two dropped under their own control.
Dain moved between them and Lana. One feeder landed against his shield and wrapped its legs around the rim. The shell brightened. Nessa’s warning reached him before the stored mana discharged.
"Throw it right."
Dain twisted and sent the creature across the chamber. Rod’s axe met it in the air. The flat side of the head drove it into a patch of stable floor hard enough to crack its shell.
The third feeder landed behind them.
Midnight sprang from Lana’s pack onto a section of broken machinery. Lana saw through his eyes for the instant required to locate the creature without turning. Ice formed beneath its rear legs and fixed them to the stone. Dirk’s second arrow finished it.
The remaining six abandoned the ceiling together.
Rod stepped away from the wall before their landing could trap the party in a line. Dain held the narrowest side of the safe stone while Dirk and Lana attacked through the space between them. Lana used shards of ice instead of lightning. The crystal surrounding the chamber offered too many paths she had not prepared.
One feeder struck Rod’s shoulder and released a flash of blue force.
Held Remedy activated beneath his armor. Golden light spread across the impact before he finished converting the stagger into a forward step. Unbroken Advance carried him through the pain. His axe swept two creatures away from Nessa, and Dain pinned another beneath the lower edge of his shield.
The fight ended without anyone leaving the stable part of the floor.
Dirk waited for the last shell to dim before recovering his arrows. "They noticed Lana’s mana."
"They noticed something." Lana looked toward the crystal above them. "I had not started a spell."
Nessa checked Rod’s shoulder while he watched the three tunnels. "The guide said they move toward active mana. Your reserves may be enough when you are this close to a full vein."
"Then they will know where I am before I cast."
"But we can plan for that." Dain scraped a feeder leg from his shield.
The three rail tunnels offered different warnings. Double white lines marked the left route as supported. A faded red triangle stood beside the center passage. The right tunnel ended at a stone wall painted with the symbol for a sealed ventilation shaft.
Dirk found a contract marker bolted to the left rail.
[Assigned galleries: Three active nests.]
[Deep-vein target: One mature crystal feeder.]
[Optional recovery records available: Two.]
The marker did not reveal which approved route would lead them to the boss. It confirmed only that every required target remained ahead.
They followed the supported rail.
The tunnel descended gradually. Old cart tracks disappeared beneath crystal dust and returned where miners had cleared the stone. Dirk kept twenty feet ahead with his bow ready. Dain watched the ceiling. Rod walked close enough to reach either side of the formation without crowding Lana and Nessa between two armored men.
The first nest occupied an overturned ore cart.
Crystal feeders had sealed the cart against the wall with overlapping plates. Pale eggs filled the interior. A support brace ran directly above it, and thin blue strands connected the nest to the mana vein on the other side of the timber.
Dirk stopped before the nest could brighten. "Cutting every strand at once may make the adults release any mana they stored."
"The brace cannot take that." Dain said.
Lana studied the timber and crystal through Midnight’s view from a ledge. "I can isolate the strands in sections. The ice will carry some of the discharge away from the wood."
Rod looked at the space around the cart. "Tell me which section comes first."
They did not rush because the objective used the word destroy.
Lana formed a narrow sleeve of ice around the three lowest strands. Dirk severed them with one arrow. Blue light spread into the ice and stopped before reaching the brace. Two adult feeders tore free of the nest. Rod and Dain killed them without striking the cart.
The next section released four.
Nessa shifted behind Dain as one crawled along the wall rather than entering the open tunnel. She raised her short staff. A half-circle barrier caught its discharge, and Dirk put an arrow through the creature while it remained fixed to the stone.
They repeated the process until the final strand went dark.
Rod used the point beneath his axe head to peel the dead plates away from the cart. Lana froze the egg mass solid. One controlled strike broke it apart, destroying every egg at the same time.
[Active nests remaining: 2]
The cart contained no usable equipment. It did contain a brass mining badge trapped beneath the eggs. Nessa cleaned it with water before placing it inside a pouch separate from their materials.
"One recovery record." She said.
The tunnel beyond the nest divided. The supported track continued downward, while a side branch entered a natural cavern. A circle on the contract marker identified one assigned gallery beyond each route. They would have to clear both before proceeding to the deep vein.
They chose the cavern first.
Timber walks crossed a hollow too deep for their lamps to reach the bottom. Crystal grew in vertical bands along the walls. The second nest hung beneath the far platform where the supports entered the stone.
The feeders could sense the arrival of a mage.
They rose from the underside of the walk in a wave of blue shells. Dirk fired from one knee. Dain drove his shield against the railing and used Brace Line, spreading the force of the first impacts through the platform rather than allowing the creatures to push him backward. The timber groaned but held.
Rod could not swing his axe freely on the narrow walk. He shortened his grip and used the head like a hooked hammer, tearing feeders from Dain’s shield and throwing them into the cavern. Lana covered the boards behind them with uneven ice. Creatures that tried to crawl around the outside lost their grip and fell.
One reached Nessa.
Its discharge broke her barrier and drove her against the railing. The Held Remedy she had placed on herself triggered before she struck the boards. Golden light restored the breath the impact had taken from her.
Dain started to turn back.
"I am standing." Nessa said. "Keep the bridge."
He stayed where he could block the next three feeders.
Dirk saw the nest through the movement. The egg cluster hung from four hardened plates, each connected to a different patch of crystal. He marked the smallest connection with Far Mark. Threading Shot found a line between Dain’s shoulder and two feeder shells.
The arrow struck.
Half the nest sagged away from the platform.
"Left side is loose." Dirk said.
Lana sent ice across the remaining attachments. Rod waited until it hardened, caught the lower edge with his axe, and pulled. The entire frozen mass tore free and fell into the dark.
[Active nests remaining: 1]
The surviving feeders lost the light beneath their shells. The party destroyed them before examining the damaged platform. Nothing structural had broken. Nessa’s barrier had taken the worst of the discharge, and Dain’s Brace Line had distributed the physical impacts across supported timber.
They allowed themselves ten minutes to drink, treat bruises, and let Lana’s casting hand stop shaking.
The final branch led through a collapsed storage room.
They found the second recovery record there: a leather equipment case beneath a shelf that had fallen without crushing it. Inside were a survey chain, two crystal gauges, and another badge. Carrying the case would slow someone during the final fight. They brought it to the marked junction and secured it behind an intact stone partition for the return journey.
The last nest filled a narrow gallery where the mana vein divided across both walls.
There was no way to approach without entering its feeding range. More than twenty small creatures occupied the cluster, and three larger feeders had hardened over the eggs. Their shells were thick enough to turn away Dirk’s first arrow.
"I can build paths through the left vein." Lana said. "Not the right. The split is too deep for me to see where it rejoins."
Rod tested the space available for his axe. "Use the side you know."
Lana raised five narrow pillars of ice from floor to wall. They did not touch the nest. Each ended against a separate crystal line. She checked the routes through Midnight’s eyes, removed one pillar that contained a cloudy fracture, and replaced it farther from Dain.
The nest woke while she worked.
Dain met the first large feeder before it reached the ice. Rod moved past him and struck the second along the edge of its shell. The axe did not break through, but Unbroken Advance kept Rod close when the creature discharged into his chest.
Nessa’s mark activated. She followed it with a direct healing spell while Dirk sent arrows into the exposed joints beneath the shell.
Lana completed the fifth route. "Clear off the wall."
Rod dragged the wounded feeder away. Dain braced behind his shield. Nessa dropped low beside him.
Lightning entered the first ice pillar.
Storm Lattice divided the current before it reached the crystal. Five narrow bolts crossed five known routes and struck the hardened plates around the nest from different angles. The plates released their stored mana against one another.
The nest split open.
Rod and Dain held the adult feeders inside the gallery while Dirk destroyed exposed egg clusters. Lana did not repeat the full spell. She used single controlled currents through whichever ice path remained intact, cutting off one section at a time.
When the final cluster broke, the entire gallery flashed.
[All assigned nests destroyed.]
A pulse moved down both walls toward the deep vein.
The stone beneath them answered.
Every lamp dimmed. Loose crystal fragments rose from the floor and slid toward the descending tunnel beyond the nest.
"The mature one is drawing mana." Lana said.
The pull strengthened. One of Dirk’s loose arrowheads skittered across the stone because a crystal setting had been worked into its base.
They did not receive the recovery time they wanted.
Nessa renewed the marks on Rod and Dain while walking. She placed Shelter Thread on Lana so a sudden mana injury would reach her immediately. Dirk recovered the arrows he could reach. Rod drank half a restorative potion and handed the rest to Dain.
The deep vein opened ahead.
The Crystal Maw occupied the center of a chamber shaped like a broken sphere. Its flat body had grown longer than a wagon. Layers of translucent shell folded across one another from its head to the six limbs gripping the walls. Feeding tendrils entered the blue vein at seven points. Each connection pulled light inward until the chamber darkened around it.
Destroying every nest had denied it the steady flow meant to strengthen the final battle.
It was still a mature creature sitting on the richest mana deposit in the mine.
The Crystal Maw released the light it had gathered.
Dain planted his shield. Brace Line reached the stone a heartbeat before the wave struck. Nessa’s barrier rose behind him, curving wide enough to cover Lana and Dirk. The blue force drove Dain back one step and shattered the barrier, but it did not scatter the party across the chamber.
Rod entered through the opening created when the creature lifted its head.
His axe struck the first limb against the wall. The shell cracked without breaking. The Crystal Maw twisted, forcing him toward a patch of unstable crystal. Unbroken Advance converted the shove into movement, but Rod chose the direction. He stepped inside the sweep instead of allowing it to throw him sideways.
Dain reached the space Rod had left and caught the creature’s second limb on his shield.
"Two channels behind the head." Dirk said from the entrance. "One beneath the right shell."
His arrows could not pierce the broad plates. They did not need to. Far Mark fixed the first feeding tendril in his sight whenever the creature moved. His next shot passed beneath a raised plate and severed it.
Blue light spilled across the wall.
The Crystal Maw recoiled. Rod broke the damaged limb with a second axe strike.
Lana froze the exposed section of vein before the creature could form another tendril. The ice did not stop the mana permanently. It slowed the flow and gave Dirk time to mark the next connection.
The creature released shards from its back.
Nessa saw the shell flex. "Down."
Dirk flattened beside the stone. Lana raised an angled wall of ice rather than a solid barrier. Crystal shards struck it and changed direction, passing above Nessa instead of driving through her cover. One cut Lana’s forearm. Shelter Thread carried the sudden loss to Nessa, and healing followed before the blood reached Lana’s hand.
Dain’s Held Remedy triggered when the Crystal Maw hammered him against the floor.
Rod could not free him without exposing the others to the head. He hooked his axe beneath a plate and pulled the creature toward himself. The Maw turned. Dain rolled clear, regained his shield, and used Intercepting Step to place himself between the head and Nessa before it completed the movement.
Dirk severed the third channel.
The chamber brightened as less mana disappeared into the creature. That made the remaining tendrils easier to see.
It also made the Crystal Maw faster.
The shell along its back opened. Stored power ran through the plates toward its head. Lana saw the route.
"Hold it against the left wall."
Rod drove his shoulder beneath the damaged side. Dain struck the opposite limb with his shield and spear together. Neither man could overpower the entire creature. They did not need to. The Maw shifted three feet and braced against the wall to resist them.
Lana had already frozen a line across that wall.
She released one bolt.
The current followed her ice into the creature’s open shell instead of spreading through the chamber. The Crystal Maw convulsed. Dirk’s arrow cut the fourth tendril. Rod tore free the plate he had hooked, exposing the pale body beneath it, then pulled his axe clear.
The Maw gathered another discharge.
Nessa had enough mana for one more full barrier or the healing Rod would need if he took the blast directly. She placed the barrier in front of Lana and Dirk.
Rod saw the choice and remained where he was.
The blast struck him and Dain at the same time.
Both Held Remedies activated. Nessa followed Rod’s with her strongest direct spell. Dain’s Brace Line failed beneath the force, but it failed after keeping him upright long enough for Rod to finish the swing he had begun.
The axe entered the exposed body behind the Crystal Maw’s head.
Dirk’s last marked shot severed the fifth channel.
Lana extended one prepared ice route into the wound after Rod withdrew his weapon. Lightning followed the ice into the creature without crossing either frontliner. The remaining tendrils released the wall, and the Crystal Maw collapsed across the chamber floor.
Its shell dimmed one plate at a time.
[Deepvein Mine contract completed.]
[Assigned nests destroyed: 3 of 3.]
[Mature crystal feeder killed.]
[Supports damaged: 0.]
[Safety markers damaged: 0.]
[Optional recoveries secured: 2.]
Nobody celebrated until Nessa finished checking Rod and Dain.
The Crystal Maw dissolved into the instance’s material allocation. Stable crystal fragments filled two marked cases. The rest vanished with the body or remained assigned to Deepvein’s share.
They collected the survey case from the junction and returned to the lift. Their route remained behind them until the gate closed. Pale light divided the shaft, the private galleries disappeared, and the platform rose into the persistent mine.
Ketta Ironpick waited beside a clerk with the completion ledger.
She inspected the badges before the crystal.
"Both records are old." She said. "They still count though."
The survey case earned an equipment recovery payment. Three cleared nests and an undamaged mine produced the highest safety grade available for their route. Ketta deducted the settlement’s contracted material share, added the badge reward, and paid the remaining balance to the party registration.
"Ten days before any of you take another Deepvein contract." she said. "The road does not have a cooldown. Move away from my counter."
They obeyed.
That evening, five agreements lay on the common room table above the stable.
The provisional terms had ended with the expedition. Rod had copied the changes Nessa requested before the journey and replaced the one-expedition limit with ongoing membership. Equal rewards, shared expenses, resurrection costs, retreat decisions, and responsibility for lost equipment remained in writing.
Dain read every paragraph again. "I am willing." He said, then signed.
Nessa looked around the table. "So am I." Her name went beneath his.
