Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Chapter 161: The Dungeon Reacts

Cassor returned the portal tool to the Sanctuary three days after promising not to use it.

The same supporter carried it through the public entrance. He declared the instrument again, allowed the inspection to confirm that its enchantment had not changed, and proceeded toward the administrative quarter without meeting Cassor at the gate.

Sanctuary security followed the record, not the man.

The Tier Two review had grown during the intervening days. Corathian clerks reported another hunter tracing old supply routes near the destroyed transit ring. An Undercity employee recognized one of the visitors asking about maintenance tunnels from the staff-portal observations. Two administrative buildings recorded the same woman waiting through consecutive shift changes without conducting business inside either office.

None of those actions justified detention.

The returning spatial instrument changed what the security supervisor expected, not what he was authorized to do. He assigned observers to the staff court, placed a portal technician behind the nearest office wall, and asked Quin to remain available through a private route.

The public road stayed open.

Employees used the staff portal normally through the afternoon.

Cassor arrived before the evening shift.

He wore ordinary travel clothes over light armor and carried nothing larger than a document case. Three supporters approached separately. One sat at a public eating stall with a view of the court. Another purchased writing supplies from a shop across the road. The third entered the administrative office beside the portal and requested information about registering a religious organization in the Sanctuary.

The supporter carrying the wedges never joined them.

He waited in a service lane behind the court where delivery workers moved handcarts between public warehouses. The route did not enter the portal boundary, but it placed him near the low wall separating the court from the adjoining road.

The security supervisor watched through ordinary street displays.

The hunters had learned from their earlier observations. They did not gather in one visible group. They positioned one person to delay the office clerk, another to warn of guards approaching from the main road, and a third near the place employees stood while presenting their tokens.

Their plan became actionable only when the first wedge appeared.

The man in the service lane removed it from beneath his coat and pressed its marked face against the outer wall. The silver cord remained wrapped around his wrist. Its other end disappeared inside the document case Cassor carried.

The portal technician identified the forming measurement.

[Restricted threshold mapping attempt detected.]

The supervisor raised the review to Tier Three.

The evening staff group entered the court unaware of the tool. Six gnomes crossed the low barrier and formed a short line before the arch. The first employee presented his token. Silver light filled the portal.

Cassor moved.

He crossed the public road with two supporters behind him. The person at the eating stall abandoned his plate and approached the court from the other side. The religious-registration question inside the office became a raised argument intended to keep the clerk away from the window.

The lookout saw no guards.

Security had not placed any on the road.

Cassor stepped over the low barrier.

The second wedge left his document case. Its markings illuminated as the silver cord pulled tight through the wall. He bent toward the active threshold.

The portal vanished.

The six employees remained in the court. The nearest gnome dropped his token and moved away from Cassor. One of Cassor’s supporters reached for the employee, trying to pull him back toward the arch before another destination could open.

Sanctuary protection stopped the hand inches from the gnome’s coat.

The failed grab gave security the final violation it needed.

Barriers rose around the court. They were clear enough for people outside to see what happened and solid enough to prevent anyone inside from reaching the road. The low wall became a complete boundary. The supporter near the service lane found the same barrier between himself and the wedge he had placed.

Cassor struck the inactive portal frame with the iron tool.

Nothing opened.

"Drop the instrument." The security supervisor said through the court display. "Place both hands where they can be seen."

Cassor looked toward the administrative building, then toward the road. Every planned route had closed without a guard entering reach.

One supporter complied.

Another drew a short blade.

He could remove it from its sheath. He could not bring the edge against a person inside the protected street. The instant he attempted to turn toward the nearest employee, the Sanctuary stopped the motion.

A private portal opened behind the trapped group.

Quin stepped through.

He wore his usual black coat and carried no drawn weapon. The immobilized hunter tried to reverse the blade toward him. Quin took the man’s wrist, removed the weapon, and placed him face down on the stone before the protection released the failed attack.

Cassor raised the iron wedge as if it were a hammer.

Quin crossed the space between them before it descended. He caught the tool, twisted it from Cassor’s hand, and pushed him against the portal frame without striking him.

Gnome security entered through a second controlled route carrying restraint bands. The bands recognized the active detention order and closed around wrists without depending on a fight. Employees left through the administrative office while the hunters were searched.

The search changed suspicion into evidence.

Cassor’s document case contained a drawn sequence of staff shift changes, the location of the portal barrier controls, and instructions for holding the threshold open after crossing. Another page connected the staff court to earlier observations around Max’s office, the Undercity service tunnels, and Corathian routes leading toward the destroyed ring.

The portal tool’s measurement record showed an attempt to preserve the restricted destination.

Cassor did not explain it as curiosity.

The operation moved outward from the staff court.

Security teams approached the rooms, rented storage, and public work sites connected to the flagged hunters. They did not search every challenge veteran in the Sanctuary. The warrants followed the shared maps, funds, and equipment found in Cassor’s case.

Demer saw the first administrative barriers close from a cafe two streets away.

He had not been told when Cassor would make the attempt. The separation of money and tools had protected Demer’s faction from helping with it. It had not protected their names from the records Cassor carried.

One of Demer’s associates entered the cafe and placed an untouched drink on the table.

"They tried to take the court." He said. "Cassor and at least three others were captured."

Demer left payment beside his own cup.

They did not return to the inn. Anything kept there could already be watched. Demer carried his travel documents, portable funds, and one incomplete map in the coat he wore. The rest could be replaced if he remained free.

He walked to the nearest public portal at an ordinary pace.

Security reached the inn while he waited in line. A gnome clerk requested that everyone keep identification ready because of an active restricted-access investigation. Demer presented his visitor record when his turn arrived. No detention order had reached the portal yet.

He entered Corathen.

The associate behind him chose the mountain exit instead. Two others abandoned their equipment and moved into separate Corathian districts. One greedy hunter remained in his rented room long enough to be caught with copied infrastructure records and a list of potential core buyers.

The group stopped functioning as one operation within an hour.

Security captured Cassor, his three supporters at the portal, the man operating the outer wedge, and several hunters found with the shared evidence. Other members scattered through Corathen or left Crag Mountain before their names reached every public route.

The searches showed that the two factions had never agreed on what would happen if they succeeded. Cassor’s room contained doctrinal writings describing every dungeon as an expanding threat and instructions for destroying a core immediately upon reaching it. A separate storage case paid for by Demer’s associates held transport padding, sale estimates, and inquiries from three possible buyers.

Both sets of records mapped the same private routes.

Security sealed them together without treating one motive as less dangerous. Cassor intended to destroy the dungeon. Demer’s people intended to dismantle it for wealth and class advancement. Their disagreement had slowed the operation, but neither side had planned to leave the core in Max’s possession.

The captured hunters received medical checks, individual holding rooms, and notice of the violations recorded against them. They were not questioned as one group. Separating them prevented Cassor from deciding which facts his supporters were permitted to admit and kept Demer’s captured associate from hearing what evidence had been recovered elsewhere.

The Sanctuary did not close to ordinary visitors. Portal staff checked alerts against specific records. Challenge veterans continued entering, shopping, training, and traveling without being treated as participants in Cassor’s plan.

Max received the Tier Three report after the staff court was secure.

He arrived in the security office with Anna. Quin had already placed the portal tool beside Cassor’s maps. The iron wedges no longer held a measurement. Their silver cord ended in a sealed evidence clasp.

The supervisor described what the hunters attempted, which actions had been observed publicly, and what the searches found afterward. He also separated the results that remained incomplete.

"Demer Holt entered Corathen before the detention notice reached his portal." He said. "At least four others left by different routes. We sent their records to Corathian authorities."

Max spoke. "Warn the relevant offices and track their portal activity connected to this case. Next time they step through, arrest them and send them to work camps."

Anna opened the recovered buyer list. "The captured hunters establish an organized attempt. The people who escaped know we found it."

"They also know the staff route no longer works." Quin said.

Max looked at the map beneath the evidence clasp.

Lines crossed the Sanctuary, the Undercity, and Corathen. Most ended at wrong assumptions. Several came close enough to private movement patterns that he could not dismiss them.

"The people who escaped will assume we change the routes," Max said.

"We should change the ones they compromised." Anna replied. "Leaving every route in place to avoid confirming their guesses gives those guesses more value than they deserve."

Max approved immediate replacement of the staff threshold Cassor had measured. The change protected employees first. Decisions about the deeper private network would wait until he could review the recovered maps instead of rebuilding it in response to one failed breach.

The captured hunters were transferred to secure holding while the gnomes completed the evidence record. Public portals returned to their normal appearance. Security flags remained on the people who had escaped, and the rooms they abandoned were sealed for a full search the following morning.
