The Hidden Ledger gave Lucian three days to prepare.
His target was an information broker named Osric Melden. Melden sold private records to merchants, officials, smugglers, and anyone else able to meet his price. That alone did not concern the Hidden Ledger. Caldris supported several businesses that survived by selling information.
Melden had acquired something he was not supposed to possess.
The locksmith placed a drawing of a brass cylinder on the table between him and Lucian. It was no longer than Lucian’s hand and narrow enough to conceal inside a coat.
"The cylinder contains names." He said. "People who have purchased services from us, people who have sold information to us, and people who would suffer if their association became public. Melden intends to sell copies and extort the names he recognizes."
"Where is it?" Lucian asked.
"In his estate. He is holding a private sale there tomorrow night. We need the original replaced with this."
The locksmith placed an identical cylinder beside the drawing.
Lucian picked it up. The weight felt carefully matched.
"The copy contains convincing material and several false names." The locksmith said. "If Melden opens it, he should believe he still has what he purchased. If anyone discovers the exchange, he will know an organization moved against him. That is undesirable."
"Who will be at the sale?"
The list included Melden, six buyers, household guards, servants, two hired appraisers, and a private cook staff brought in for the evening. Lucian received descriptions of the estate, neighboring buildings, staff schedules, and every known entrance.
He received no floor plan.
The Hidden Ledger had once possessed one. Melden remodeled after buying the property and employed different workers for separate sections so none understood the complete result.
Lucian spent the first evening observing the estate from surrounding streets. He did not remain in one place long enough to become a familiar face. He passed as a porter, a messenger, and an idle pedestrian sheltering from rain. The next morning, he followed two servants to a market and learned when kitchen deliveries arrived.
By the third day, he knew the rhythm of the outer house.
The estate occupied a narrow piece of land between an old canal and a street of wealthy residences. Its public entrance opened toward the street. Servants and deliveries used a covered passage along the eastern wall. A high rear window stood above the canal, protected by decorative ironwork and a locked internal shutter.
Lucian chose the canal.
Before committing to that route, he tested three alternatives.
The eastern service passage offered the easiest entry and the greatest chance of being remembered. Melden’s staff checked deliveries against a written list. The roof connected to a neighboring residence, but crossing it required passing beneath a watch room. A disused drain entered the cellar and ended behind an iron screen that had been mortared into the wall.
The canal window demanded more skill and exposed him to fewer people.
Lucian also prepared for the cylinder not being in the study. The Hidden Ledger knew where Melden usually stored sensitive material, not where he would place an item during a sale. Lucian acquired wax, fine wire, two sets of counterweights, a narrow mirror, and clothing that could pass among the household servants. He memorized every known name on the guest list without assuming those would be the only people present.
On the afternoon before entry, he watched a jeweler arrive with a reinforced case. The man left without it. An appraiser brought two assistants not included in the Ledger’s information. Melden doubled the street guards shortly before sunset.
Lucian adjusted his timing but not his route.
He entered the water two streets away after midnight and allowed the current to carry him beneath the estate’s rear wall. Broken Outline blurred him against the dark stone when a patrol crossed the bridge above. Quiet Step mattered only after his fingers closed around the maintenance ladder.
He climbed to the rear window, examined its protections, and opened them without leaving visible damage. Before he entered he pulled a small but expensive talisman from his pocket. As it activated, the talisman itself crumbled into dust while a swirl of warm wind extracted the water from his clothes, hair and skin.
The talisman was expensive when he purchased it from the Hidden Ledger but for this job, it made everything easier. He stepped into the estate, perfectly dry.
Lucian closed the shutter behind him and waited. The room beyond stored linen.
Voices traveled through the wall. Servants moved between the kitchen and the private dining room carrying the last courses of the sale. None approached the linen room. When the passage cleared, Lucian stepped into it and turned away from the occupied portion of the estate.
He did not hurry.
People noticed hurried movement. A servant who walked with purpose could cross spaces where a skulking stranger drew attention. Lucian had dressed in the same dark gray used by Melden’s household staff. Anyone who saw him briefly would remember the clothing before the face.
The first locked door protected a record office.
Mechanism Sense revealed an alarm plate beneath the lower hinge. Lucian left it untouched. A narrow stair continued upward behind a curtain at the end of the passage.
He followed it to Melden’s private floor.
The study stood where the Hidden Ledger expected. Its lock was good enough to delay an ordinary thief and simple enough not to inconvenience its owner. A ward line ran around the frame. Lucian bridged it before turning the final pin.
He entered and closed the door.
The room contained a heavy desk, shelves of account books, two locked cabinets, and a painting large enough to conceal a wall safe. Lucian inspected each without touching more than necessary.
The cylinder was not there.
He did not search the room like a burglar hoping luck would provide an answer. Melden’s desk held patterns. Recently used drawers carried different dust along their edges. A cabinet key had been removed from its hook. Fresh pressure marks showed where a heavy case had rested near the document lift earlier that day.
Lucian checked the wall safe only far enough to determine the cylinder could not fit among its current contents without displacing stacked coin boxes. He left those boxes untouched.
The mission required one exchange. Anything else he stole would alert Melden and make the successful portion harder to conceal.
He found the case intended to hold it inside the desk. Its fitted lining matched the drawing, but the hollow was empty.
Lucian studied the desk again.
A hidden lever beneath the center drawer connected to a mechanism inside the wall. It did not open the safe. It controlled a narrow document lift running downward from the study.
Melden had moved the cylinder to another floor without carrying it through the house.
Lucian returned the drawer to its exact position and listened at the study door.
The private sale continued below. A man laughed loudly enough to cover the sound of a chair scraping. Somewhere farther away, a servant rang for another bottle.
Lucian traced the lift shaft through the wall and found a maintenance panel inside a shallow storage recess. Opening it revealed a chain, guide rails, and a wooden carrier large enough for papers or a small lockbox. The carrier rested below him.
He could climb down the shaft.
He could also become trapped if Melden summoned the carrier while Lucian was inside.
Lucian waited until the next round of footsteps passed, then opened the panel and entered.
The descent brought him behind the wall of a counting room on the floor below. He stopped before reaching the carrier and listened through the panel.
Two people occupied the room.
"The bids are finished." A woman said. "Melden wants the other items brought upstairs."
"And the cylinder?"
"It stays where it is until payment clears."
Lucian heard a key turn.
One set of footsteps left. The other remained for several minutes before following.
He waited longer.
When the room remained silent, he eased the panel open.
The counting room held stacked ledgers, locked payment boxes, and a reinforced cabinet set into the far wall. The document carrier rested beside it. The cylinder was not inside the carrier.
Lucian crossed to the cabinet.
The lock included a secondary line attached to something within. Opening the door incorrectly would pull that line. He traced the mechanism through the metal and found it connected to the handle of a portable case.
Removing the case would change the weight resting on an internal plate.
Melden had protected the cylinder against precisely the kind of quiet theft Lucian intended.
Lucian examined the cabinet, the case, and the duplicate concealed beneath his coat.
Then someone screamed in the front courtyard.
The estate bells began to ring.
Lucian did not move toward the sound. He counted the bells, identified it as a household alarm rather than the city watch signal, and continued examining the cabinet. The disturbance changed the patrol pattern. It did not change the objective.
Outside the counting room, someone ordered servants into the kitchen and guests into the main dining room. The estate was becoming easier to cross in some places and harder in others.
Lucian intended to leave before either condition mattered.
He also noted the nearest secondary exit before touching the cabinet. If the document lift became unusable, a dumbwaiter behind the adjoining pantry descended to the kitchen level. It was a worse route, crowded and too narrow for his shoulders without removing the frame, but knowing it existed prevented the room from becoming a trap.
The canal remained his preferred escape because it separated disappearance from pursuit. A guard who glimpsed someone in the service passage could raise a description. A watcher staring into black water could not distinguish Lucian from the reflections beneath the bridge.
He had cached a dry coat downstream and paid for the storage room under a false name he established when he first started working for the Hidden Ledger. Nothing about the exit depended upon finding an unlocked door or improvising transport after the mission.
Every useful contingency had been arranged before he entered.
The screaming stopped. The bells did not. He still wasn’t sure what was happening out there, but he hadn’t blown his cover yet and hoped to keep it that way.
Someone tested the counting room door from outside and found it still locked, like it was supposed to be. Lucian stood within the narrow space beside the cabinet where the opening door would conceal him. A guard entered, glanced beneath the table, checked the window latch, and left. He did not examine the cabinet because the household alarm concerned a fleeing person, not missing property.
Lucian waited for the lock to turn again before resuming his work.
His preparation had accounted for discovery of the exchange, a returning clerk, a changed case, and a failed canal exit. It had not predicted an unrelated intruder. That did not matter. Preparation was not the ability to foresee the exact problem. It was having enough information and control to respond without panic.
He measured the portable case using the reflection in his narrow mirror so he would not shift it prematurely. The fitted duplicate matched the genuine cylinder in length and weight, but the wax seal on the original faced left. Lucian memorized the angle before touching it. A correct object returned carelessly could still reveal the intrusion.
