Lucian spent his first two days in Ironcloud learning how people moved through the stronghold.

The city occupied multiple connected mountains. Roads became tunnels, tunnels opened onto bridges, and freight lifts replaced stairs across entire districts. Following a target required understanding which routes belonged to workers, which served visitors, and which appeared public until a guard asked for a household mark.

Lucian did not attempt to master Ironcloud before meeting the client. He learned enough to recognize when someone followed him and enough to leave the meeting by more than one route.

The Hidden Ledger intermediary operated from a repair shop near a secondary air harbor. Nothing on the sign suggested criminal business. The dwarf behind the counter repaired navigation compasses and sold replacement lenses for field glasses.

Lucian presented the brass identification cylinder Harlon gave him.

The dwarf tested its concealed pins, returned it, and pointed toward a rear stair.

"Leave your travel pack. Take anything you need to defend yourself."

The meeting room occupied the level above the shop. One door opened from the stairs. A second led onto an enclosed bridge connected to another building. Lucian noted the alternative exit and then turned to the six people waiting around a plain table.

He recognized none of them.

That was promising.

Rod introduced himself first. The broad man wore an axe at his side despite the protected location. Lana sat beside him with Midnight occupying the back of her chair. Dirk watched Lucian with the attention of someone accustomed to noticing how others moved. Dain and Nessa completed the adventuring party.

Renn sat apart from them.

The dwarf wore the green-stoned ring openly, but Lucian had no reason to assign it importance. Ironcloud contained more jewelry than Caldris contained street signs.

"You came from Caldris?" Renn asked.

"Yes."

"Have you worked for a Ruskell?"

"Not knowingly."

"That is not reassuring."

"It is accurate."

The intermediary remained beside the door. "The Ledger checked his completed contracts, known associates, travel history, and clients. We found no Ironcloud connection before this assignment and no Ruskell connection at all."

"What happens if that changes after he leaves?" Renn asked.

"If we discover a concealed connection relevant to the contract, you receive notice. If your family attempts to bribe him, that becomes information he reports if it affects the work. The Ledger does not promise that no one will ever approach a contractor."

Lucian let the intermediary answer. Defending himself too eagerly would provide no useful proof.

Midnight watched him from the chair. The familiar’s eyes followed Lucian when he shifted his weight. Lucian could not tell whether the cat sensed anything unusual or merely disliked strangers.

He did not reach toward it.

Renn continued studying Lucian.

"Why accept wilderness work if your reputation is urban?"

"Because I want experience outside cities. If the assignment requires expertise I do not have, I will refuse after hearing the details."

Rod appeared to approve of the answer. Renn appeared uncertain.

Dirk unfolded the oldest map of Blackwater Reach.

"The property lies east-northeast of Ironcloud." He said. "The old approach follows a mountain river into this valley. Newer maps remove the buildings and list the road as abandoned. We know construction continued there for nine years. We do not know what remains."

Lucian examined the distance bands and contour markings. "Who owns it now?"

"Legally? A dissolved holding company, unless someone transferred it through records we have not found."

"Who believes they own it?"

Renn answered. "My family. Possibly Helmar Ruskell personally."

The name appeared in the contract warning.

"Does Helmar know you traced the records to this property?"

"He knows we are searching." Renn said. "He found Blackwater Reach years ago. He does not know that we found it too."

"His people are there now?"

"Yes. We do not know how many, which buildings they use, or how much of the original defenses they restored."

That was relevant. Lucian did not ask why Helmar wanted the site or how the family dispute began.

Lana placed a list beside the map. It identified Helmar, his confidant Brogan, several household officers, and the marks used by companies aligned with his faction.

"These are the people and symbols we know." She said. "You need to recognize which parts of Helmar’s operation you are seeing and whether anyone from outside his faction is present."

Lucian studied each entry before moving on.

The list also showed the type of prosthetic Helmar now wore in place of one hand. That detail could identify him at distance even if he traveled without family colors. Lucian memorized it with the other physical descriptions.

"If I see Helmar at Blackwater Reach, do you want me to remain and learn why he is there?"

Renn answered too quickly. "Yes."

Rod corrected the instruction before it became part of the contract. "Only if remaining does not increase the chance of discovery. Confirmation that Helmar reached the site is already valuable."

Lucian wrote the limitation into his own notes. He did not need the disagreement explained. Renn wanted answers. Rod wanted the scout to return with the answers.

"What do you want from the first visit?"

Renn began to answer, but Rod spoke first.

"Which areas are occupied. Patrol numbers and schedules. Active wards. Entrances. Airship access. Supply routes. Any outer building you can enter without leaving evidence."

"And the main structure?"

"Observe it. Do not force entry into the deepest secured areas."

"If I find documents?"

Renn leaned forward. "Bring them."

Lucian looked toward the intermediary and then back to the dwarf. "That changes the job. Removing an original tells whoever owns it that someone entered. I can copy what is safe to copy. I take an object only if we agree the information matters more than remaining unnoticed."

Renn’s expression tightened.

"He is right." Dirk said. "We asked for a scout, not a raid."

The dwarf relented. "Copy them unless the property is about to be abandoned or destroyed."

"If it is being abandoned, I still decide whether carrying documents compromises my exit."

Lucian did not say it to assert control over the clients. Once he entered Blackwater Reach alone, no one at this table could judge conditions for him.

Nessa asked what would cause him to withdraw.

"Someone identifies me. A defense I cannot examine safely. A patrol pattern that prevents an unseen approach. Evidence the site is bait. Weather that makes tracks impossible to conceal. Anything suggesting you withheld a danger relevant to the mission."

"We have told you what we know." Rod said.

Lucian believed him more than he believed Renn. The party spoke like people accustomed to dangerous work. Renn spoke like someone close enough to the problem to resent every limit.

"How will you reach it?" Dain asked.

"Not on an airship connected to you."

The old road passed two settlements before entering the abandoned valley. Lucian planned to travel with a freight caravan for the first portion, separate at a mining junction, and approach through the northern ridges instead of following the river directly.

Dirk pointed out a steep section where the contour lines nearly touched.

"That route may be impassable."

"Then I learn that before entering the valley and use the western slope."

"The western slope can be watched from these buildings."

"If the buildings still stand."

They spent the next two hours refining the route. Dirk provided practical knowledge without attempting to take over the assignment. Lana explained the types of ward housings listed in the archive records. Dain reviewed the attacks Helmar’s people used outside Ironcloud only where they revealed the faction’s methods. Nessa described the possibility of false uniforms and documents.

Dirk asked Lucian how he planned to conceal himself in open ground.

Lucian answered by activating Stealth.

His outline softened first. Color drained from his clothes and skin until the wall showed through him. Within seconds, only a faint distortion remained where he sat. Midnight’s ears turned toward the chair, but the familiar continued looking at the correct location.

Lucian released the skill.

"Sight is the easy part." He said. "It does not hide tracks or scent, and I will not assume guards at an old warded property rely only on their eyes."

Dirk nodded. He possessed the same ability and did not require a longer explanation. "How long can you maintain it while moving?"

Lucian gave him an honest estimate. It was long enough to cross an exposed approach or pass a patrol. It was not long enough to spend an entire night invisible beside a guarded entrance.

"Then choose your observation points before you need it." Dirk said.

"That is the plan."

Lucian learned that Helmar used intermediaries, possessed airships, and preferred actions difficult to prove. He learned the faction might kill an intruder rather than arrest one.

He did not learn about Tharic’s death.

No one explained why Renn wore the ring or what they believed waited at Blackwater Reach.

Lucian did not care. Curiosity became dangerous when it encouraged an infiltrator to exceed the contract.

They agreed upon signals for his return. Lucian would not contact the party from the property. If he required more time, a message would pass through the Hidden Ledger without identifying his location. The clients would receive no daily updates that someone could intercept.

The intermediary added a safeguard neither side had considered. If Renn or Rod’s party sent new instructions, those instructions would not reach Lucian automatically. The Ledger would hold them until he checked a designated contact point away from Blackwater Reach.

"You cannot redirect him in the middle of the mission." The intermediary said. "An intercepted message can expose a scout more easily than a footprint."

Renn disliked surrendering control but accepted the condition. Once Lucian left Ironcloud, the party would not know his daily position and could not pull him deeper into the property whenever they uncovered another archive fragment.

Renn placed the advance on the table.

"How long?"

"Travel depends on the northern ridge. Observation depends on what I find. Expect no report for at least twelve days. Do not assume failure before twenty."

"And after twenty?"

"Ask the Ledger whether I sent instructions. Do not send a second scout along my route."

Renn accepted the terms.

Lucian left through the bridge rather than the stair he entered. He crossed two connected buildings, descended through a public lift, and spent the afternoon purchasing the last provisions he could obtain more cheaply in Ironcloud than along the road.

The following morning, he joined a freight wagon carrying machine parts toward the eastern settlements. He traveled under his own name and gave no false story elaborate enough to be remembered. He was an adventurer seeking work beyond the city. Nothing about that was unusual.

Dirk watched the wagon depart from an upper road but did not follow it. He had given Lucian the maps and warnings available. Testing the scout by placing another tracker behind him would only create the kind of unexplained movement Helmar’s observers might notice.

Renn remained at the protected lodging with the ring and the archive records. If Helmar’s people watched him, they would see no expedition forming and no familiar airship preparing to leave.

The scout departed as one traveler among many.

At the mining junction three days later, Lucian left the freight road.

The distant mountains narrowed around a dark river. Clouds gathered above the northern ridge. Somewhere beyond it lay a property missing from modern maps and guarded by people who could not know Renn’s group had traced the key there.

Lucian adjusted his pack and entered the wilderness.
