The teapot had been hot for six hours.
Hammer lifted the lid, inspected the remaining water, and placed it back on the testing plate. "Still boiling."
"It is supposed to be boiling." Gibble said.
"I know what it is supposed to do."
"Then stop sounding disappointed that it works."
Hammer checked the temperature rune for the fourth time. He was not disappointed. He distrusted any success that had not been examined from enough directions to reveal how it intended to fail.
The factory testing room held twelve identical teapots. Each sat on a prepared square marked with the same warming pattern. Six contained water. Three held weak tea. Two were empty to test whether the enchantment would overheat without liquid. The last had been dented, dropped, chilled, and reheated until its metal complained.
All twelve remained within the safe range.
Lessa Vorn stood on the other side of the table holding the repaired runic tablet against her chest. The artifact had begun as an enchanting plate no one could use reliably. Its archive contained patterns, but damaged compensation lines introduced small errors whenever those patterns were transferred.
Gibble and Hammer had not merely repaired the broken lines. They built a stable compensation plate that interpreted the surviving archive and projected a consistent pattern onto prepared material.
The distinction mattered. The tablet alone could not turn random objects into enchanted products. Metal had to be cleaned, measured, positioned, and prepared for engraving. The projected pattern required calibration. A trained worker inspected each result before activation.
What changed was repetition.
An enchanter no longer needed to redraw the complete warming pattern from memory for every teapot.
Gibble opened the batch record. "One hundred transfers. Ninety-eight passed first inspection. One had a shallow line because the pot shifted. One had residue in the engraving channel."
"Both were caught before activation. And both were considered user error." Lessa said.
"Yes."
Hammer removed the empty teapot from its plate. Its safety line had interrupted the enchantment when the metal reached the set limit. "We should break the next batch in different ways."
Lessa stared at him. "The next batch is meant for sale."
"Not those. Separate test pieces."
"He likes breaking things after they work." Gibble explained.
"I like learning whether they stop working safely."
Max entered in time to hear the answer. "That sounds useful in a factory."
Hammer nodded as though the Dungeon Master’s arrival required no interruption. Max preferred that to everyone abandoning work to acknowledge him.
Anna followed with the wholesale proposal. The dungeon core would purchase approved products from the partnership and distribute them through dungeon merchants. Gibble, Hammer, and Lessa earned their agreed shares without needing to operate individual stalls.
Lessa placed the tablet on its padded stand. "I reviewed the rental amount."
Gibble waited for an objection.
"It is fair." She said. "The archive belongs to me, but an unusable archive did not produce these."
Hammer looked at her for the first time since Max entered.
Lessa continued. "You repaired it, built the compensation plate, designed the line, and will maintain it. I receive rent for the tablet’s use and a smaller share when one of its stored patterns enters production. You are paid for operating and improving the process."
"You could demand more." Gibble said.
"I could demand enough that you refuse, the machine sits idle, and all three of us earn nothing."
"Some owners choose that."
"Some owners are fools."
Anna completed the agreement before any of them found a reason to become uncomfortable with its simplicity. The tablet remained Lessa’s property. Damage caused through factory use would be repaired at the operation’s expense. Lessa could inspect it with notice and withdraw it after the agreed rental period, although any machines Gibble and Hammer built remained theirs.
There was little else to negotiate.
Max examined the products planned for the first month. Self-heating teapots and flat cooking plates came first. Warming mugs required a weaker version of the same pattern. Serving trays could hold food at a safe temperature without continuing to cook it. Caravan food warmers used insulated boxes rather than open plates.
Gibble added boot dryers after listening to adventurers complain about wet gear.
"That one may sell better than the teapots." Anna said.
"People like tea." Hammer replied.
"People hate wet boots more."
The warming stones were simplest. A small engraved block released steady heat for a limited period after receiving mana. Inns could place them in beds. Travelers could wrap them in cloth. Healers could use carefully regulated versions without carrying hot water.
None of the products changed warfare or transformed society. They made common tasks easier.
That was why the potential market was so large.
The testing room door opened onto the new assembly floor. Gibble pulled a lever, and the machine he and Hammer built began to move.
It was not a single belt. A circular frame carried prepared objects through six stations. The first locked each piece into an adjustable cradle. The second cleaned the engraving surface with spinning brushes and directed air. The third aligned the compensation plate’s projection. The fourth guided cutting tools along the pattern. The fifth filled the engraved lines with prepared material. The sixth held the object beneath inspection lamps before activation.
Workers controlled every station.
One adjusted the cradle for different pot sizes. Another confirmed the projected pattern had aligned with the intended surface. A trained runic worker inspected depth and continuity. The last worker activated only pieces that passed.
The machine removed carrying, repositioning, and much of the variation that caused failed batches. It did not decide whether an enchantment was safe.
"We can add a second ring." Gibble said as the first teapot rotated. "Not today. Once the workers can run this one without us correcting every third placement."
Hammer pointed toward an empty section of floor. "The second ring should handle flat pieces. Cooking plates and serving trays do not need the same cradle."
"You said that after I finished the adjustable design."
"Because I saw the adjustable design."
Their argument continued while both watched the same gauge.
Max opened his dungeon interface. The first batch approved teapot entered the wholesale core exchange. DP appeared when the transaction completed. More arrived as workers prepared the next pieces. The amounts were modest individually and impressive when multiplied across an assembly line that could operate every day, all day.
Gibble saw Max’s expression. "Good?"
"Very."
The dwarf grinned and increased the machine’s speed by one setting.
Hammer immediately reduced it. "The filler is lagging."
"It can handle another two pieces per cycle."
"When the material is warm. It is cooling."
Gibble checked the reservoir and conceded without saying so. He adjusted its heater instead.
Lessa watched the tablet project the same clean pattern again and again. The rental payment alone would have supported her comfortably. The pattern share grew with every approved product.
Gibble divided the earnings according to the agreement. Lessa received her rent and pattern share. Hammer’s portion included maintenance and production work. Gibble’s matched it. The factory retained funds for materials, wages, and expansion. As the financer, Max took everything that was left. The daily earnings from the factory were offsetting a portion of the dungeon upkeep. Maybe one day his factories will expand enough to cover the entire upkeep of his ever growing dungeon.
No one became wealthy from a single crate.
The orders for the next twenty crates changed the calculation.
Workers began preparing more metal. Hammer moved to the second testing table to damage safety lines in controlled ways. Gibble sketched a flat-piece ring while pretending he had intended one all along. Lessa opened the archive and searched for another simple pattern whose failures could be safely contained.
Max and Anna left them to it.
Behind them, the circular machine advanced another teapot through its six stations. The runic pattern that had spent years trapped inside a damaged artifact was no longer a curiosity on a table.
It had become an industry.
The first failures arrived before the shipment left the factory.
An inspector found that three warming mugs became hotter near their handles than their rims. The enchantments remained within the safe limit, but the uneven heat made them unpleasant to hold. Gibble stopped the mug portion of the line before anyone suggested the products were good enough.
The problem did not appear in the projected pattern. It came from the mugs themselves. Their handles had been attached with a different metal mixture that drew energy away from one side of the engraving.
Hammer cut one failed mug open, examined the joining, and changed the preparation instructions. Future handles would receive a narrow insulating line before the warming pattern was transferred.
Lessa watched him destroy a finished product. "You could have sold that as a hand warmer with a drinking attachment."
Hammer looked at her.
"That was a joke." She said with a roll of her eyes.
"Good."
Gibble tested the corrected version and approved it only after six heating cycles. The delay cost part of a day. It also prevented hundreds of identical complaints from reaching merchants.
The boot dryer produced a different problem. Its first design warmed from the bottom, leaving wet leather trapped around the ankle. Anna brought in an inn worker who used such equipment every day. The woman looked at the prototype, turned it sideways, and asked why the warm air did not travel through a hollow center.
Gibble stared at the machine for several seconds. "Because we designed it like a warming stone instead of a boot dryer."
The factory paid her for the suggestion.
The revised dryer used a low heat pattern around a perforated metal form. It cost slightly more to make and worked in half the time. Caravan outfitters doubled their preliminary request after seeing it.
Lessa began reviewing her archive with a new standard. The most impressive patterns were not automatically the most useful. A stable enchantment that reduced hours of ordinary labor could sell to far more people. A brilliant combat effect might sell to a handful of wealthy adventurers and require far more expensive materials.
She found a cooling pattern related to the warming design and brought it to Hammer.
"Later." He said.
"You have not examined it."
"The warming line is still teaching workers how to operate one pattern safely. We add another after they can identify failures without us standing behind them."
Lessa looked toward the inspectors. One had already set aside a teapot because a filled line contained an air gap. "How long?"
"Weeks, not years."
That answer satisfied her.
Max’s DP records continued updating throughout the day. Local sales to Inns and merchants generated quick DP. Wholesale transactions generated even more.
The system did not reward the partnership merely for possessing a repaired artifact. It rewarded them because useful objects moved through a living economy.
By evening, the factory had gathered enough people to train a second shift. Gibble refused to start it until the first crew could shut down every station safely. Hammer added an emergency lever that separated the compensation plate from the engraving tools without damaging either.
Their interest had moved beyond runes. They discussed material flow, station timing, inspection points, worker fatigue, and which processes could be automated without concealing defects. The new rotating machine was only the beginning.
When the shipment finally departed, every crate contained fewer products than the morning estimate, but each item was of a higher quality.
No one involved considered that a failure.
