Chapter 102: Chapter 96: Rainy Day, Action
The six of them turned their heads to conspire in hushed tones.
Huang Zhiqiang couldn’t help but curse, "Zhao Youcai, you’re a real animal! You were the first one to say we shouldn’t take them in. She rubs up against you a few times and suddenly you’ve switched sides!"
Huang Zhiqiang thought Zhao Youcai must be sexually repressed.
That woman was so dirty you couldn’t even tell what she looked like, and he was still willing to have a taste.
Meanwhile, Zhao Wenjie, completely unaware that Zhao Youcai had once had his eye on Yang Yi, wore a teasing look.
"I get it, Youcai. But you really are a bit... *cough cough*... repressed."
Liu Ye’ye covered her mouth to hide a giggle. She actually had a decent impression of the newcomers. She thought the three men were quite polite, and as for that Xia Yao... ’She’s a real vixen.’
Zhou just smiled without saying a word.
Zhao Youcai wasn’t even blushing. "My main thought is... they jumped down from the second floor. They came here determined to join us and can’t go back. We can’t just let them starve to death outside or get eaten by zombies, can we? Right, Dongzi?"
Yu Dong, however, didn’t tease Zhao Youcai.
"We have things to do right now. And while these four seem okay, letting them in right now... it’s just too risky. Remember the ’dark forest’ rule of the apocalypse? We have to plan for the worst-case scenario. What if we leave the community and their baser instincts take over, and they cut off our only way back?"
After they modified the angled guardrails, not even a college athlete could climb the walls. The drawbridge was the only way in or out of the community!
If someone destroyed it, it would be incredibly difficult to get back in.
"But... Youcai has a point. Watching the four of them die out there isn’t something we’d do. I’ve just been trying to think of a better solution..."
Yu Dong never intended to leave the four of them to die in the first place; he was just trying to figure out a solution that would work for everyone.
Huang Zhiqiang asked, "Have you thought of anything?"
Yu Dong’s gaze fell on the mini-mart they hadn’t finished clearing out yet...
"No way... That’s my stash! I was going to hoard it all at home!" Huang Zhiqiang exclaimed.
The little hoarder was angry!
Yu Dong chuckled and patted Huang Zhiqiang on the shoulder.
"The army will be here soon. We’ll never be able to eat all this food. Take what you like, and we’ll leave the rest for them. Who knows, maybe when things are peaceful again, we can all be friends."
"That’s the way," Zhou said with a gentle laugh.
He had known all along that Yu Dong wasn’t that heartless. This outcome was no surprise.
"Fine. In that case, I’m doing a supermarket sweep!" Huang Zhiqiang decided he would take all the whole milk to help Qiao Ping with her calcium, and of course, he’d grab the few cans of baby formula too.
After a brief discussion, the group came to an agreement.
Yu Dong took a few steps forward and said:
"The four of you, while we can’t conveniently house you... this is a mini-mart we just secured. We’ll be taking half of the supplies from inside."
"There will still be a lot of food left, enough for the four of you for a good while. There should be a place to rest on the second floor. The mart has a manual roll-down security door. All you have to do is pull it down, and the zombies won’t be able to get in. It’s very safe."
"This mini-mart... is all yours."
The four of them stared at the two-story mini-mart, completely stunned!
If you were to rank the number one supply point everyone wanted in the apocalypse... it would have to be a supermarket.
Whether it was a large supermarket, a small one, or a convenience-store-style mart like this one at the community entrance, they were all excellent places to find a large amount of food.
The whiplash from Yu Dong’s earlier coldness to his current generosity sent the four of them on an emotional rollercoaster.
"Really? We can eat it?"
Seeing Yu Dong nod, Tian Hui was so moved that tears streamed down her face. She had been starving for two months, and now she could finally have a full meal.
"Dude, you’re awesome! I’m bowing down to you! I won’t say much else... but if you ever need me, Liu Cong, just say the word! As long as there are no zombies on the road, I’m on call 24/7." Liu Cong thumped his chest, which resounded with a THUD THUD.
Jiang Cheng looked on in disbelief.
"This... this is too much. How can we possibly thank you? Money, property... none of that is useful anymore. We don’t have anything of value to offer. In any case... thank you so much! Just like Liu Cong said, if there’s anything you need us for, just ask."
They had been hungry for so long. Food was the one thing they needed most, bar none.
The people standing before them were their saviors.
Then he added with emotion, "I used to watch those short post-apocalyptic dramas where everyone was killing each other... reality is completely different! Our countrymen are still good people. You of the new generation... you’re much more capable than we are."
Jiang Cheng was fifty years old. He had been in the army, worked for the state, and later quit to start his own business. He had his own factory and provided for about a hundred people. He was a man of rich experience, but at this moment, he was truly moved by Yu Dong and these other young people.
Their kindness was so great it was almost unbelievable.
He knew this definitely wasn’t just because Xia Yao had called that man "daddy" a few times; it was the result of the other group’s careful consideration.
The more he thought about it, the more precious their actions seemed.
Xia Yao happily hugged Zhao Youcai. "Thank you, Daddy~"
Her enthusiastic display made Zhao Youcai a little embarrassed.
"*Cough cough*... It’s nothing."
With someone like Yang Yi, he was disdainful and could tell her to suck his dick without batting an eye.
But faced with a girl who was this enthusiastic and open, Zhao Youcai found himself a bit tongue-tied.
He didn’t even take the opportunity to make a lewd comment or two.
Yu Dong said to the small group of four, "Alright then, that settles it. Take care of yourselves. We’ve received word that the Yanhai City army will be here soon..."
"Really?"
Hearing another piece of good news, the four of them grew even more excited.
It was an ordinary encounter, and although they had given away half a mini-mart’s worth of supplies, everyone felt... really good on their way back.
Yu Dong thought it was probably because they had met people who knew how to be grateful, instead of taking everything for granted.
Even Huang Zhiqiang, the most vocal hoarder of the group, deliberately left behind some high-calorie foods for them, only taking some of his favorite snacks and the milk and formula for Qiao Ping.
The group made several trips across the drawbridge into the Xiangti Bay Community to haul back the paint and their half of the supermarket supplies.
Once they were back, Zhou moved all the paint cans to Building Three.
"I’ll be working in Unit 103 of Building Three. Don’t come near me unless it’s an emergency. It’s very dangerous!"
Seeing Zhou choose Building Three, Zhao Wenjie hesitated for a moment before asking, "You’re not going to burn down the floors above, are you?"
"As long as you don’t disturb me, there won’t be any accidents."
If he didn’t have at least that much confidence, Zhou would have been a chemistry professor for nothing.
With the complete set of chemistry equipment Yu Dong had prepared for him, plus the paint they had just brought back, Zhou was confident he could crack open the bank vault.
While Zhou was busy mixing his chemical concoction, the remaining five began clearing out the zombies in Xianghai Park.
Liu Ye’ye had used the 3D printer to create numerous attachment slots for the robot dog. In addition to the high-voltage stun baton, it could now be fitted with a loudspeaker.
And so... a talking robot dog began to roam through Xianghai Park.
"Two bucks! Two bucks! Everything’s two bucks! You can’t go wrong for two bucks, you can’t get cheated for two bucks! Just two bucks!"
The loudspeaker dog drew out all the zombies hidden in Xianghai Park.
A horde of zombies ran after the agile robot dog.
The robot dog easily scrambled up the drawbridge and into the community. Sun Shan quickly raised the bridge, leaving the pursuing zombies to rage impotently outside the wall.
Then, the group lured them to the main gate, killed them through the gaps, and finally burned the bodies.
The whole operation was as smooth as flowing water, leaving the four newcomers, who had just settled in on the second floor of the commercial street mini-mart, with their jaws on the floor.
"How are they so smooth? They’re luring zombies like they’re walking dogs..."
"Wrong. The dog is walking the zombies."
"Aren’t they afraid of zombies at all? They’re so amazing..."
"Even living outside their community, I feel so safe. I love it, I love it."
Using the loudspeaker dog, Yu Dong and his team killed off all the zombies in the park, including those on the more distant streets.
The process went smoothly, and they still hadn’t encountered the climbing zombies that Qiao Yunliang had mentioned.
Time flew by.
「Six days later, on the 60th day of the apocalypse.」
The sky was blanketed in dark clouds, and a bolt of lightning tore through it!
Droplets of water began to fall from the sky.
"The rain is here. It’s time for us to move!"
