Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 62 - 58: You Didn’t Release the Virus, So Why Save Them?Chapter 62: Chapter 58: You Didn’t Release the Virus, So Why Save Them?
They left Apartment 503.
Yu Dong gestured for silence.
"Shhh~"
They glanced at the elevator they had shut down and the fire escape door they had secured with a chain. Everything was in order. The six of them then tiptoed toward Apartment 501.
As they passed the fire escape door, they could faintly hear something moving in the stairwell.
’Zombies respawned in the stairwell...’
But they had already moved some of their weapons and drones to 503. Based on his experience from his past life, all they had to do was kill the zombies in the stairwell from behind the safety of the door, and they would be free to come and go.
It wasn’t a big deal.
Yu Dong didn’t think it was a big deal, but the five people behind him were starting to tremble.
Zhao Youcai, who had just been boasting about becoming a post-apocalyptic capitalist, immediately hid behind Yu Dong.
"Dongzi... are you sure those things can’t break through the door?"
He was thin and small, only 169 cm tall. Of the four men, he had the weakest build.
Huang Zhiqiang was about as tall as Yu Dong and chubby.
Zhou was a little shorter and older than Yu Dong, with a bit of a paunch, but he was still reasonably fit.
Overall, none of the three were strong and muscular like Yu Dong. Their combat effectiveness was weak—a far cry from Lin Xiaojun’s trio in his past life.
"The zombies in the stairwell aren’t a big problem, but you three need to start seriously training your physical fitness."
"Absolutely, we will."
The six of them quietly entered Apartment 501 and shut both doors behind them.
This time, thanks to Sister Zhang’s master key ring, moving around was much easier.
They didn’t have to break the locks every time, which would also make it easier for team members to move in later.
The sounds coming from Apartment 501 abruptly stopped the moment they heard the door open.
Then, a clear, brave-sounding young man’s voice called out, "Brother Qiang, is that you?"
Huang Zhiqiang glanced at Yu Dong. When Yu Dong nodded, Huang Zhiqiang went and unlocked the door to the room.
Yan Yikai, who had been waiting quietly inside, walked out.
Huang Zhiqiang patted his head.
"Not bad, kid. Cool and collected, just like when you’re gaming. You’ve got the makings of a commander."
"I had a feeling you weren’t a bad person, Brother Qiang. There must have been a reason you were looking for me. Later I saw what was happening below... and sure enough. Thank you for saving me, otherwise I would have definitely been eaten in my apartment."
"You’re not scared?"
"I was, but I’m much better now."
"Good. Come sit here. I’ll introduce you to my friends in a bit."
"Okay!"
Yu Dong’s eyes landed on Yan Yikai. The high school sophomore was only seventeen. He wasn’t particularly tall, maybe 170 cm, but his leg muscles were extremely well-developed.
"I often see you kicking a ball around downstairs by yourself. Have you trained?"
"Yeah, I’ve loved playing since elementary school. I’m a substitute winger for our city’s youth soccer team."
"Nice. I like athletes."
Yu Dong’s first impression of Yan Yikai was a good one.
’He doesn’t waste words, and he’s in great shape.’
Being a fast runner was a huge advantage. In his first life, Yu Dong hadn’t been able to outrun Xufeng... and had died a miserable death.
Following that, the other people were let out one by one.
The pregnant woman, Qiao Ping, looked grief-stricken and remained silent, merely staring numbly at the six of them.
This actually made Yu Dong breathe a sigh of relief.
He had been afraid that Qiao Ping would become emotional after coming out and insist on looking for her daughter.
"I already told her what’s going on downstairs," Yan Yikai spoke up.
"Okay, good."
Since she already knew, it saved Yu Dong the effort of explaining.
Liu Ye’ye helped Qiao Ping sit down on the sofa.
"The old lady fainted!"
Zhao Youcai saw the collapsed old woman on the floor after opening another door.
"Don’t touch her! Let me."
Shen Xinyi snapped into professional mode. She hurried over, her long legs taking quick, small steps. She surprisingly pulled a penlight from her pocket and shone it into the old woman’s eyes to check her pupils.
When the young couple was let out last, Yang Yi was instinctively startled at the sight of so many people and hid behind Zhao Wenjie, not daring to speak.
Zhao Wenjie patted her hand.
"Baby, don’t be afraid. I’m here."
He braced himself, puffed out his chest, and said, "As the captain of our five-person team, I demand to speak with your leader!"
Everyone glanced at him, then shared a look of confusion.
’Another captain?’
Seeing Yu Dong’s surprise, Yan Yikai whispered from the side, "When we were trapped in the room earlier, we were discussing how we should meet you... and he insisted on being the captain."
Yan Yikai clearly understood the situation and immediately sided with Yu Dong and Huang Zhiqiang.
Huang Zhiqiang snorted with laughter.
"Kid, don’t make your Brother Dong laugh. Come on, sit down, have some water. We can put this captain business aside for now and talk about the current situation."
Zhao Wenjie said defiantly, "The five of us are united. We share honor and disgrace. Whatever you plan to do to us... you’d better consider if you can handle the five of us fighting back!"
Yu Dong looked at Zhao Wenjie with great interest and nodded. "Commendable courage."
"But..."
He gestured toward the young soccer player Yan Yikai sitting beside him, the silent pregnant woman Qiao Ping, the old lady who was just being revived, and the delicate college student Yang Yi hiding behind Zhao Wenjie.
"Are you sure anyone in this team of yours has any combat ability besides you?"
Truthfully, Zhao Wenjie didn’t look like he had any combat prowess either. He was tall and skinny. Before the apocalypse, he might have passed for handsome. Now, only a single term came to Yu Dong’s mind to describe him: scrawny.
’It’s not even an insult. The back of his hand is so thin you can see the veins. He’s the type with more bone than muscle. I’m afraid he’d break a bone just by bumping into the table.’
Seeing that Zhao Wenjie still looked nervous, Yu Dong patted the sofa.
"Sit down, sit down. Don’t be so tense. The three of us are your seniors from university. We’re not going to hurt you."
"To be honest, you four are much better than I thought. At least you didn’t scream and shout in here. Otherwise, we’d have to deal with the zombies before we could talk."
"You’ve all seen the situation outside. A zombie virus has broken out. People are either turning or dying. You are all very lucky, because we saved you. Can we all agree on that?"
Yu Dong crossed his arms and scanned the four of them.
"Yes! I know! I analyzed it with them. You must have known about this ahead of us, that’s why you saved us," Yan Yikai immediately chimed in.
"That’s right. We have some friends... they warned us. They also discovered that you few had traits that suggested you wouldn’t turn, so we went out of our way to save you."
’With someone playing along, this is much easier,’ Yu Dong thought.
After Yu Dong’s brief explanation, most of them relaxed. Only Qiao Ping looked at Yu Dong, her expression puzzled.
"Who did you get this information from?"
"It’s classified. I can’t tell you."
"Why didn’t I get it... no, give me a phone, I need to make a call. If there was advance notice... it’s impossible my husband wouldn’t have told me."
"Who is your husband?"
"The director of the Yanhai City Health Station."
"Well..."
Yu Dong hadn’t expected Qiao Ping’s husband to be such a high-ranking official.
He gave the phone to Qiao Ping.
"Go ahead and call."
After getting the phone, Qiao Ping dialed her husband’s number... but for a long while, no one answered.
She then made several more calls, but still, no one answered.
"Sigh... my condolences. I know how it feels. It’s awful, but you have to keep going," Liu Ye’ye comforted her.
Suddenly, the next call connected.
Qiao Ping cried out, "Uncle! Are you okay?"
"Nuonuo... is infected."
"We’re trapped in Xiangti Bay and can’t get out. I... I’m fine. I was rescued by someone. He said he got the news in advance, did you receive any on your end?"
"Mm... okay... mm... I’ll wait for you."
After she hung up, Yu Dong asked in surprise, "Your uncle is...?"
"He serves in the Yanhai City military. They’re currently facing the same situation. He said that once things are sorted out over there... he’ll come and rescue us."
"But... given his rank, even he didn’t receive any advance notice. How did you guys get it?"
Qiao Ping looked at Yu Dong’s face, her eyes filled with questions.
Yu Dong was stunned.
’I’ve stumbled into the Celestial Family!’
Qiao Ping’s background was clearly no small matter.
Just as he was about to discuss the details with Qiao Ping, a voice came from behind him.
"Oh my~ How did it get like this... what happened... Where’s my son? What have you done with my son?"
The old lady was awake.
Shen Xinyi helped her walk out.
"She’s fine, just overly frightened. She’ll be okay now that she’s awake. The old lady is in good shape, physically."
Yu Dong seized the opportunity to dodge Qiao Ping’s question and turned to address the group.
"That’s good. Now that everyone is here, it’s a good time to talk about the current situation and what we need to do next."
At that moment, the old lady took two sharp steps forward and berated them harshly.
"Was it you! You must have released the poison gas! You killed my husband! You killed everyone in the entire complex!"
Zhao Youcai said, "Ma’am, you’re mistaken... We didn’t cause the virus. We saved you."
"If you didn’t release the poison, why would you save me?"
The old lady’s eyes narrowed viciously. She pointed a finger at Zhao Youcai, her face contorted with rage as she sprayed spittle onto his chest.
