Chapter 99: Chapter 94: We Are Here to Join You
"Target: the Duorui Paint Shop at the community entrance. Move out!"
Six people and one dog, fully armed!
They walked up the stairs built on the inside of the wall. Then, Sun Shan lowered the wooden drawbridge, creating a long ramp out of the community that formed a stable right-angled triangle with the wall and the ground.
The robot dog, with an electric baton strapped to its head, was the first to run out across the drawbridge. It headed toward the target point to scout ahead.
Huang Zhiqiang followed, descending with his explosive-proof shield raised.
Behind him were Zhou Jian Country and Zhao Youcai, both holding spears.
Next was Liu Ye’ye. She held a remote control with a small screen, maneuvering the robot dog forward to explore continuously. On her back, she carried a large bag containing a drone and batteries.
Behind Liu Ye’ye was Yu Dong, holding a cocked composite crossbow with 39 crossbow arrows on his back.
At the rear of the team was Zhao Wenjie, who had taken Yan Yikai’s place. He was equipped with a small round shield and a mountain-cutting saber. His combat suit was clearly a bit short for him, but luckily he was thin enough to squeeze into it.
This time, they didn’t bring any weapons that didn’t belong to their roles. Everyone focused solely on their position, traveling light.
The Xiangti Bay Squad had officially stepped out of their community and onto the streets for the first time.
CREAK...
After they were all down, Sun Shan pulled the ropes, hoisting the drawbridge up with two pulleys. He secured the rope to a nearby iron bar, and the drawbridge became part of the wall.
Just like that, the community once again had no accessible entrance.
Yu Dong looked at the simple wooden drawbridge with satisfaction.
"Brother Lying Flat’s craftsmanship is really something."
Zhou: "...Why does his nickname keep changing?"
Beside him, Zhao Wenjie chuckled. "Brother Lying Flat’s skills are impeccable. We were lucky we didn’t try to force our way into Building Two through the main entrance back then. Even wearing full armor would have been useless. With that giant death pendulum he set up, whoever entered would die. That declaration was no joke..."
"STAY AWAY, OR DIE!"
It was both a warning and a reminder.
Yu Dong had actually understood part of its meaning, which was why he hadn’t dared to lead his people through the main entrance at the time.
In the end, they had dismantled Sun Shan’s death trap at the entrance and forcibly recruited the lone wolf, Brother Lying Flat.
Without the wall and drawbridge Sun Shan had built, Yu Dong and his team wouldn’t have dared to venture out.
For one, they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to get back in. For another, they were afraid of climbing zombies infiltrating their base.
Over the past month, Qiao Yunliang’s group had been in constant trouble. They were ambushed by climbing zombies many times. Besides their combat personnel, the survivors they had taken in were also frequently attacked by various zombies. One person got a light scratch from a zombie, thought it was nothing, and didn’t report it... That night, he started an all-you-can-eat buffet right inside the settlement.
Listening to all sorts of absurd news from their side over the month, Yu Dong’s biggest takeaway was... until the area was completely liberated, it was much more comfortable to stick to their own territory with their own people.
Many people aren’t quite right in the head, but because they can manage their daily lives, they’re treated as normal. Living with such people is terrifying.
The Zongshan Settlement was far from being as safe as they had imagined.
The six people and one dog walked along the street outside the entrance. There wasn’t a single zombie in sight.
Since the apocalypse began, Yu Dong and his squad members had cleared the surrounding zombies over and over again.
They never let a single zombie near the community get away.
Any that passed by were lured over with a loudspeaker and killed.
The effects weren’t visible in a day or two, but by the 54th day of the apocalypse, the area around the Xiangti Bay Community was basically clear of zombies.
The occasional few zombies that wandered over from other areas were quickly dealt with.
The group now stood on the street outside, looking around.
Directly in front of the Xiangti Bay Community’s main gate was the Shangri-La Hotel. Next to the hotel was a new residential complex built on reclaimed land called the Bihai Building. It was a top-tier, ultra-high-end community in Yanhai City, boasting the most perfect sea views and luxurious amenities. It had already replaced Xiangti Bay’s former status, completely overshadowing it.
The occupancy rate of this community was quite high. Not only did many owners live there, but out-of-town tourists looking to rent would also spend a bit more to choose the high-end, truly seaside apartments of the Bihai Building District over Xiangti Bay, which was a step down in every respect.
And past the Shangri-La Hotel and the Bihai Building were the beach and the boundless sea.
Therefore, very few zombies came from this direction; some were trapped inside the Bihai Building District.
After observing that no zombies were coming out of the hotel or the Bihai Building, Yu Dong gave the others a hand signal.
"This way..."
Outside the Xiangti Bay Community was a small commercial street, which was home to the authentic Anhui beef banmian noodles that Yu Dong loved most.
Yu Dong and his team’s target for the day was the Duorui Paint Shop at the end of this small commercial street.
Moving forward cautiously, they reached the entrance of the small supermarket closest to the community. The little shop’s door was still open, and Alps lollipops were scattered on the ground at the entrance, covered in dirt.
The inside of the shop appeared empty of life, but they could clearly see it was stocked with a large amount of daily supplies.
Especially the boxes of Six Walnuts, Daliyuan small bread, and Haochendian biscuits stacked near the entrance... things they felt they’d gotten sick of before the apocalypse. Having not eaten them for so long, the sight made them itch to haul some back and have a taste.
Huang Zhiqiang said excitedly, "Dongzi, we poked the owner of this supermarket to death before. There shouldn’t be anyone inside. How about... we move everything out of here in a bit?"
Yu Dong shook his head slightly. "We’re heading to the Duorui Paint Shop..."
"But it’s killing me not to take all this stuff home! It feels like I have ants crawling all over me."
