As expected of a property under Chief Yuan's name—the way they handled things was truly astonishing.
Tracking someone down here was so seamless it felt like following a walkthrough.
"You've seen him?"
While Fu Qian marveled to himself, Yuan Shan's eyes lit up as she pressed on.
"No, but I've heard of him plenty of times."
Moxie smiled slyly.
"A lot of people ask about him, too. I just collect the information and share it."
"Sounds like quite the celebrity!"
Yuan Shan marveled.
Moxie sighed. She traced the curve of her chest with nimble fingers, shooting Fu Qian a glance.
"Just like Mister Fang here."
"Apologies. That was rude of me."
Fu Qian nodded, apologizing at lightspeed even as his gaze drifted downward to observe for a few seconds more.
"Hahaha..."
Moxie froze for a second before bursting into a fit of laughter, trembling like a flower branch.
What impressed Fu Qian the most, of course, was that even with such exaggerated movements, the hat on her head remained perfectly steady, not shifting a single fraction of an inch.
As expected of a custom-made piece.
"This friend of yours is quite interesting!"
As Fu Qian marveled at the hat, Moxie looked him up and down, offering her praise with a flirtatious wink.
"You look unfamiliar. Is it your first time in Sacred Night Capital?"
"First time."
Withdrawing his gaze, Fu Qian was more than happy to chat patiently with someone who had handed over important intelligence right off the bat.
"Then I'm sure you'll find plenty of interesting things here. Have you gone to try your luck yet?"
An expert like Moxie naturally picked up on his tact, leaving her even more satisfied.
Even when a customer knocked on the bar to call for her mid-conversation, she simply snapped her fingers and waved over another staff member to handle it.
"Aren't we here looking for Midas?"
Fu Qian gestured to his eyes with two fingers.
"If my eyes hadn't been blinded by money, how could I have been so rude earlier?"
"Yuan Shan... Mister Fang is a much sweeter talker than you are!"
It took Moxie a couple of seconds to register what he meant by his earlier 'rudeness.' Beaming, she playfully complained to Chief Yuan.
"Midas hasn't been around here for long, and his background is very mysterious. Rumor has it he got into some trouble and came here to lay low."
She didn't give Yuan Shan a chance to retort. A moment later, she steered straight back to the main topic, detailing what she knew.
"But it's obvious this place is a lucky charm for him. In just over a month, I've personally heard of at least three legendary winning streaks he's had at the casino."
"If they're true, I doubt money problems are an issue for him anymore."
"On top of that, he seems quite generous. More than one person has struck it rich after receiving his guidance. The only pity is..."
Moxie scanned the bar, looking slightly regretful.
"None of those people are here right now."
"It's fine. Give me a list."
Yuan Shan finally found an opening to speak, her tone crisp and decisive.
"I'll go find them at the casino."
"They might be watching the strippers, too."
Clearly familiar with her friend's style, Moxie chuckled and rattled off a few names, thoughtfully describing their appearances and even their preferred gambling games.
"Let's go."
Having secured a solid lead, Yuan Shan didn't waste another second, motioning for Fu Qian to follow.
"Thanks for the hospitality."
Fu Qian rose leisurely, making sure to finish his drink.
"That's all the thanks I get?"
Moxie took the empty glass, blinking at him. She lowered her voice, her expression alluring.
"Do you have somewhere to rest during the day? Come back anytime. I can arrange a room for you."
"Alright, I'll remember that."
Fu Qian nodded, not standing on ceremony.
...
"Let's head to that first casino."
Back on the street, Chief Yuan clearly laid out their plan.
"That place is crawling with professional gamblers. From Moxie's description, this lucky guy named Midas has shown up there quite a bit."
"I agree."
Fu Qian didn't hesitate for a second, immediately accepting her proposal.
"This was supposed to be your task. How did it end up with me doing all the work?"
Fu Qian's response made Yuan Shan suddenly realize she was acting like the one assigned to the mission. She gritted her teeth.
"The capable do more work."
Fu Qian praised her with a smile.
"I'll let you handle the hard work, and I'll bear the consequences."
It was an utterly shameless thing to say, yet Yuan Shan grew somewhat quiet, not rushing to protest.
Judging from her earlier conversation with her teacher, the Bookstore Owner clearly understood the dangers of this trip. Yet despite that, he had accepted it without a single objection.
She still didn't understand why her teacher had made such a bizarre request, but doing her best to ensure things went smoothly seemed to be the only thing she could do right now.
"Wouldn't it be best if you found a place to rest, and I reported back to you once I have results?"
Chief Yuan was an elite transcendent, however. She quickly snapped out of her thoughts and fired off a cold, mocking remark.
"I can do that?"
Fu Qian's eyes lit up.
"You should have said so earlier. I wouldn't have even come out."
'You actually want to?'
"Of course not!"
Chief Yuan gritted her teeth.
"I want to start my vacation early, you know."
"Alright, let's hope so."
His attempt to slack off thwarted, Fu Qian looked utterly disappointed.
"I can tell Moxie has a good impression of you, though. Once this is all over, you might want to consider her offer."
Seeing his reaction, Yuan Shan smoothly changed the subject, painting a rosy picture for him.
"I appreciate the thought, but how could I casually disturb the children's rest?"
Fu Qian shook his head.
"How did you know?"
Yuan Shan froze upon hearing this.
"I'm an expert in flesh and blood power. How could I fail to notice whether someone is raising children?"
Fu Qian gave her a look of utter disdain.
"...Moxie is indeed raising two children on her own."
After a few seconds of silence, Yuan Shan sighed, admitting Fu Qian was right.
"Seeing you chat so happily with her, I figured you didn't mind that part."
"Why would I mind? You didn't mind, did you?"
Fu Qian asked in return, looking genuinely puzzled.
...
"Is anyone from the list here?"
As Chief Yuan fell silent once more, Fu Qian pointed straight ahead.
While they were talking, the two of them had already arrived at the casino.
Even at midnight, the place was bustling.
"I need to take a close look."
Yuan Shan motioned for him to be patient.
"Alright. Don't stress—if this doesn't work, I have plenty of ways to track people down."
'I don't doubt that for a second, but you had better not use them yet.'
In that regard, Yuan Shan had entirely too much faith in Fu Qian. She couldn't even fathom what kind of chaotic scene would unfold if he started messing around in here.
"Found him!"
Fortunately, a moment later, she successfully matched a face to her target and motioned for Fu Qian to keep up.
"Moglin?"
Getting straight to the point, she planted herself in a seat and stared at the gambler rumored to have received guidance from Midas.
Around forty years old and wearing metal-framed glasses, he was clearly on a hot streak. Not only was he practically glowing with triumph, but the chips in front of him were stacked in massive piles.
"Yes."
Visibly annoyed at the interruption, Moglin glanced over at Yuan Shan. But his eyes immediately lit up, and he subtly showed off his massive pile of chips.
"And how might I address you, miss?"
"Yuan Shan."
The scrutiny clearly displeased Chief Yuan, but standing by her true name and surname, she gave him her name.
"If I may, I'd like to ask a question."
"You really know how to pick your timing. I'm in a fantastic mood right now... so I don't want to answer any questions."
Clearly sensing that she wasn't moved by his chips, Moglin narrowed his eyes and immediately put on airs.
"Use your method."
Faced with this uncooperative attitude, Chief Yuan was nothing if not decisive. Without a single second of hesitation, she signaled Fu Qian.
"You got it!"
Fu Qian instantly responded.
