Chapter 20: How Did You Make So Many Enemies?

By the time everything was handled, twilight had fallen. The farce had finally come to an end.

The arduous day at the Wen Family Luxury Estate was finally over.

Bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun, the lavish residence was riddled with holes, its battle-damage aesthetic maxed out.

Fortunately, the place was massive. With a bit of cleanup, it was still habitable, but two more incidents like this and they might as well tear it down and rebuild from scratch.

As the chief culprit behind it all, Fu Qian had successfully relied on today's violent display to win everyone's respect—or rather, their fear.

"Mr. Fu, thank you for your hard work today. I've already had a room prepared for you."

Wen Li looked completely drained, as if she had aged decades in a single day, but she still forced herself to keep her spirits up.

She was one of the few people still willing to speak to Fu Qian.

"It was an effortless favor."

Young people these days really had quite the temper!

After escalating things to this point, Fu Qian certainly didn't believe they could just laugh away old grudges.

If he had offended the guy to the bitter end, then so be it. Whether Eldest Young Master Ye secretly wanted to skin him alive and pull his tendons was of zero concern to Fu Qian.

Judging from his earlier behavior, the young master valued his own life immensely.

After the incident with the flying corpse on the fourth floor, Eldest Young Master Ye would surely lay low and avoid trying any more petty tricks until he completely figured out Fu Qian's background.

Achieving that much was enough.

The best part was that no matter how hard he investigated, he would only uncover the fact that Fu Qian was just an ordinary bodyguard. That would definitely leave him thoroughly paranoid.

That much time should be more than enough for Wen Li to finish her advancement.

He just hoped she wouldn't drop the ball when the time came.

...

The night passed without incident.

By the time he woke up in the massive, luxurious bed, it was already broad daylight.

Ever since becoming a transcendent, Fu Qian found his energy levels to be constantly brimming. Sleep had become entirely optional.

But as an avid fan of sleep, he still habitually rested in bed.

Although the bedroom provided for him had been hastily prepared, it was visibly extravagant—far beyond a standard guest room.

When he heard Wen Li yawning as she walked into the room next door, Fu Qian finally confirmed that he had been placed in the estate's master bedroom.

It seemed the Wen Family was genuinely terrified.

A maid was already waiting outside his door to call him down for breakfast.

When Fu Qian arrived in the dining room, Wen Li was elegantly eating her breakfast, looking like she had regained much of her color.

He didn't know if they had actually listened to his advice, but the number of servants on duty was noticeably smaller today.

Listening to advice made life easier; Wen Xiuxian was a pragmatic man after all.

"Good morning, Mr. Fu. The kitchen can make whatever you'd like to eat."

After politely greeting him, Wen Li smiled and explained her father's absence.

"My father has some matters to handle, so he headed out early this morning."

It wasn't easy being rich!

Fu Qian mused inwardly as he sat down and picked at a few side dishes.

But with food that tasted this good, the hardship was definitely worth it!

"Mr. Fu, regarding our security arrangements, do you think there's anything we need to improve? I'll have them cooperate with you completely."

Demonstrating the impeccable upbringing of a well-bred young lady, Wen Li waited until she had finished her breakfast before asking.

"There's definitely a lot of room for improvement. So much room, in fact, that there's no point in even trying."

Fu Qian didn't even look up.

He was telling the truth. The Wen Family's current security looked tight, but only if they were up against ordinary assassins.

Against non-human entities skilled in stealth and infiltration, their defenses were completely useless, riddled with blind spots.

...

"You're still suggesting I hide in the Safe House, aren't you?"

Wen Li sighed.

"For certain reasons, unless it's an absolute last resort, I'd rather not take that route. I'll discuss it with my father when he gets back."

As it turned out, trouble arrived much faster than Wen Xiuxian did.

A short while later, a nervous servant hurried in to announce that a special guest had arrived, asking for Fu Qian by name.

Before Wen Li could say a word, the door was shoved open from the outside.

A woman dressed entirely in black walked in, maintaining a Poker Face.

Although her clothes were plain, her aura was overwhelmingly intense. She felt like an unsheathed spiked club—so abrasive that no one dared to look her in the eye as she passed.

Marching straight to the dining table, the woman swept her sharp gaze across the room before locking it dead onto Fu Qian.

"Are you Mr. Fu?"

"I can be."

...

"Team Leader Tan, what brings you here today?"

The moment Wen Li saw the intruder, her expression soured. Seeing the woman target Fu Qian directly, she couldn't help but step in, speaking with the authority of the lady of the house.

"I just have a few things to discuss with this Mr. Fu."

The woman surnamed Tan didn't even glance at Wen Li. Giving Fu Qian a distinctly hostile glare, she gestured sharply to the side.

"Mr. Fu, please come with me."

Why was everyone in this place more arrogant than the last?

Fu Qian could easily tell that the woman standing before him was no ordinary human. She was undeniably a transcendent, and quite a capable one at that.

Did having too much muscle really cause the brain to rot?

"Team Leader Tan, what is the meaning of this?"

Before Fu Qian could reply, Wen Li anxiously interjected.

"Mr. Fu is on duty right now. It is inconvenient for him to leave."

"This is the second time already. Are you targeting the Wen Family on purpose, Team Leader Tan?"

The second time?

Fu Qian suddenly realized something.

"Night Watchers?"

"Mhm."

Wen Li gave a slight nod, making sure to introduce her to Fu Qian.

"This is Ms. Tan Mingxue, the leader of the city's second Night Watchers squad. We've had some dealings in the past."

Just as he thought.

Fu Qian had vaguely suspected as much the moment the woman walked through the door.

Before going to sleep last night, he had taken some time to look into this organization he kept crossing paths with.

In this world, the Night Watchers were one of the largest organizations and a highly unique entity. Almost everything related to supernatural powers fell under their jurisdiction.

Boasting a transcendent status and formidable strength, Night Watchers squads were scattered everywhere, maintaining order across the entire transcendent world.

Almost no one was willing to make an enemy of them.

In fact, it was precisely because of their existence that ordinary people could survive the clashes between so many non-human entities and lead normal lives.

It was no wonder she was so arrogant. Anyone backed by an organization like that would accidentally develop a habit of bossing people around.

As for those dealings Wen Li mentioned, they probably weren't pleasant experiences.

Fu Qian recalled what Wen Li had told him yesterday.

She had finally managed to hire a powerful bodyguard, only for the Night Watchers to drag him away because he had a dirty record.

That was probably what she meant by "the second time."

Just how badly did your family manage its relationships, to have people sabotage you like this?

As Fu Qian mentally sighed, Wen Li was already failing to hold back her complaints.

"There was a valid reason when you came to our door last time, Team Leader Tan, and we cooperated fully once we understood the situation. But surely you need to give us a reason for today, don't you?"

"A reason?"

Tan Mingxue looked like she had just heard a hilarious joke.

"You're overthinking things, Ms. Wen. The Night Watchers aren't bored enough to deliberately target your family."

"As for this Mr. Fu, you surely didn't think he could kill someone in this place and just walk away like nothing happened, did you?"
