Chapter 247: Pure Land Arc (9)

Was his defined role in this new script really just that of a tool?

Surrounded, Fu Qian let out a deep sigh.

Judging by the group's reaction, now that they had locked onto him as the assassin, they didn't care what he said; they just wanted to kill him.

In that case, there was no need to stay.

Fu Qian quickly made up his mind. He had already gathered enough information tonight; staying would only escalate the conflict.

The next moment, his figure blurred as he vaulted directly off the balcony.

Amid Grace's screams, Fu Qian vanished into the vast night.

"Don't worry,"

Collins spoke as the group in the massive banquet hall stared toward the balcony.

It wouldn't end that easily.

Collins's words fell perfectly on the ears of Fu Qian, who was still lurking outside.

These people clearly had no intention of letting the matter drop. He wondered if this was also part of the script.

But without a doubt, there were now dozens of people hunting him in this town—and every one of them was capable of doing him harm.

The atmosphere had certainly tensed up. But what did tracking a bald assassin have to do with a guy just here on vacation?

As Fu Qian thought this, his facial features rapidly shifted.

By the time he left the courtyard, he had reverted to his original appearance.

He had still gathered quite a bit of valuable information.

Although he couldn't yet determine how these people had ended up like this, it was almost certain that Helom's death was linked to them.

In addition, he had obtained a name: Nate.

This old man who had failed to attend the banquet was undoubtedly worth a visit.

In fact, right now would be a good time. The only problem was that he still didn't know where the man lived.

Walking through the night, Fu Qian's mind raced.

Veil most likely knew, but there was no need to make a special trip back just to ask her.

Rounding the street corner, Fu Qian hailed a taxi.

"To Old Knight's house."

He said as he slid into the car.

Those who attended such banquets were prominent figures in town; it was highly unlikely the taxi driver wouldn't know the address.

"Which Nate?"

Unexpectedly, the driver was quite cautious. After an instinctual nod, he still asked for clarification.

"The one who lost his son not long ago."

Fu Qian didn't even look up.

News of that sort undoubtedly spread fast. The driver understood immediately.

A little over ten minutes later, Fu Qian arrived at his destination.

After paying the fare and stepping out, he looked at the building before him and moved into action without hesitation.

It looked like he was home.

Moving through the equally luxurious manor, Fu Qian soon spotted something unusual.

Following the direction in his perception, he quickly located his target.

The room's door stood open, the inside pitch-black without a single light.

A figure sat silently in the dark, his back turned toward the door.

"Who's there?"

Before he could even enter, an aged voice rang out.

He actually noticed my presence?

Rather than being startled, Fu Qian was delighted.

Although he hadn't deliberately concealed his aura, an ordinary person could never have detected him, let alone with their back turned.

Compared to the others at the banquet, this person was clearly special.

He might have come to the right place.

As he pondered this, the person inside turned around.

The darkness didn't hinder Fu Qian's vision at all. He could see that it was indeed an elderly man with graying hair and a white beard.

What drew the most attention, however, was the object gripped in the man's right hand.

A brass-colored long-barreled revolver gleamed coldly in the faint moonlight, aimed squarely at him.

Fu Qian could even make out its intricate engravings.

This must be Mr. Nate.

"Who are you?"

The man asked again in the exact same tone, looking ready to fire at any second.

"Since you didn't show up to the banquet tonight, Madam Grace asked me to come check on you."

Fu Qian walked forward with a smile, turning a blind eye to the firearm pointed at him.

While the weapon in the man's hand could theoretically harm him, that was only if it hit.

And with him on guard, that was impossible.

"Banquet?"

The old man repeated the word absently. After a long while, he shook his head and began muttering to himself in broken sentences.

"Indeed, there's a banquet tonight... Very important, but I didn't go... I think I forgot."

This was Nate, no doubt about it.

Fu Qian nodded.

"That's fine. Mostly, I just wanted to make sure you hadn't met with any accidents."

With his guess confirmed, Fu Qian stepped forward and sat down naturally across from Nate, observing the man closely.

Compared to the others, Nate was undoubtedly different.

First, this man also possessed that imperceptible hollowness, but to a noticeably lesser degree.

Second, he clearly wasn't like the others who were completely immersed in the play; he could react to outside information and hold a logical conversation.

Even more tellingly, Fu Qian glanced down at the floor.

Centered around Nate, a thin layer of white frost spread outward, forming a circle beneath his feet.

Even from where Fu Qian sat, he could feel a biting cold.

Transcendent power?

This sight made Fu Qian even more curious.

This Mr. Nate actually gave off the aura of Transcendent power?

"The assassin is an unfamiliar face. He shouldn't be a local. Best to inform Sheriff Harry as soon as possible..."

Just as he was thinking this, Nate's tone abruptly shifted, uttering a completely out-of-context statement.

Hmm?

Fu Qian frowned.

When saying those words, Nate's state seemed to shift, becoming closer to that of the group at the banquet.

"Upon hearing Sean's name, I felt deeply saddened and lost the strength to attend the banquet. I am truly sorry..."

Nate's tone shifted yet again. With his face filled with sorrow, he stared blankly at Fu Qian as he spoke.

"Sean is an excellent child. I am proud of him, and I won't allow anyone to slander him..."

He switched back again. This old man's mental state was completely chaotic!

Fu Qian nodded inwardly.

Nate seemed to be constantly shifting between two states.

One was a normal state, able to converse and interact to a certain extent.

The other was an in-character state, desperately acting out his role in the script.

This was probably also the reason he hadn't attended the banquet.

But that raised the question: what exactly had caused this?

"It's all right. Everyone understands."

While consoling Old Knight, Fu Qian scanned their surroundings.

The smell of alcohol lingered in the air, and behind Old Knight, he could see a knocked-over glass and a half-empty bottle of liquor.

It was clear the man had originally been here drowning his sorrows.

At the same time, there was a faint smell of gunpowder, indicating the revolver might have already fired a shot.

Fired a shot? Could it be—

Was this the Demigod-Slaying Gun?

Fu Qian instantly thought of his mission.
