Chapter 324: Fool's Cage (18)

When Soufflé and Violeta returned home, they received a warm welcome from their three sisters.

Of course, the eldest sister didn't look too pleased.

All the way back, she had been beating around the bush, trying to question Violeta about what had happened and figure out why she had appeared there.

Unfortunately, Violeta's memory seemed stuck at the moment she had first woken up, completely blank on everything that followed.

"Why did you leave Violeta outside all by herself?"

Soufflé demanded before they could even sit down.

"She clearly went to look for you..."

Bella froze, looking at Violeta in utter confusion.

She had assumed Violeta already told Soufflé on the way back. Why did it look like that wasn't the case at all?

Unfortunately, all she received in return was an even more bewildered look from Violeta.

"To look for me?"

Soufflé frowned even harder.

"Why would she look for me? And even if she did, were you all so lazy that you made Violeta, the youngest, go by herself?"

"I..."

Hani initially wanted to defend herself, but remembering she had to keep Bella's secret, she simply lowered her head in grievance.

"Forget it. Don't let it happen again. You all go get some rest."

Sensing that something was off with Bella's expression, Soufflé paused and didn't press the issue.

"Remember, do not fall asleep. Especially you, Violeta."

Okay!

The sisters felt as if they had been granted amnesty and hurried back to their rooms, but Bella was called back.

"What happened?"

Soufflé asked in a low voice.

"It's about Margaret."

Bella glanced toward Margaret's room and explained her abnormal behavior from earlier.

"How could this happen!"

After hearing the story, Soufflé looked both shocked and heartbroken.

"Margaret is the most careful and diligent out of all of us. How is that possible?"

"We didn't expect it either. We thought she was doing better than Violeta, but it seems... she's always been timid. Maybe that's why we didn't notice it before."

Bella's voice was gloomy as she looked up at her older sister.

"Soufflé, do you think one day we'll all—"

"We won't!"

Soufflé shook her head firmly before she could finish.

"Don't be afraid. There will definitely be a way. Margaret will be fine too, trust me."

Okay...

"Speaking of which, what's going on with Violeta?"

Soufflé remembered her earlier confusion.

"Did she fall asleep again later on?"

"No, no!"

Bella shook her head instinctively.

"She was completely normal earlier. She even noticed something was wrong with Margaret and volunteered to go out and look for you."

Although she was answering honestly, since her sister didn't explicitly ask, she didn't mention their previous encounter with the crocodile.

"But she really doesn't remember anything. I can tell."

Soufflé pondered for a long time but ultimately couldn't make sense of it.

"It seems that after she went out alone, she fell asleep one more time but doesn't remember it herself."

"That must be it."

Bella couldn't think of any other possibility either and agreed with her sister's guess.

...

"Soufflé!"

In the dark room, the tiptoeing Soufflé jumped at the sudden voice from the corner, freezing with her hand on the door.

But she quickly realized whose voice it was.

"Violeta!"

She stared at the corner in disbelief. A moment later, a short figure stepped out from behind the Scarecrow.

"It's me."

Fu Qian nodded, looking at the eldest sister who had been preparing to sneak out.

A long time had passed, and it was already night outside.

Not long after returning to the room, Fu Qian had successfully retaken control, letting Violeta continue to feign sleep.

After that, he had quietly slipped out and hidden here.

His intuition told him that Soufflé had been interrupted earlier and might sneak out under the cover of night.

And thanks to his excellent patience, he actually managed to catch her.

"What are you doing here?"

Soufflé's eyes were wide as saucers, clearly shocked by his presence.

"I want to go with you."

Fu Qian pointed outside, expressing his demand clearly and concisely.

...

She hadn't expected him to wait here just for this. After freezing for a moment, Soufflé quietly opened the door.

"Let's talk outside."

"Okay."

...

The door slowly closed behind them. By the faint starlight, Soufflé looked at her younger sister's face.

"You waited all this time just for this?"

"Yeah."

"Do you know where I'm going?"

"The same place as earlier today."

"...Then do you know what I'm going to do? Yet you're so determined to follow me."

"No, but I want to help."

...

Seeing that Fu Qian wasn't going to give up easily, Soufflé let out a long sigh and finally agreed to his request.

Furthermore, it was obvious that she was very confident in her earlier probing; she harbored no further suspicions now.

...

"Remember not to make a sound later."

Soufflé whispered instructions as they navigated through the dark night.

"Mhm."

"Also, no matter what you see, don't be afraid."

"Mhm."

...

"Violeta, what do you think is the most terrifying thing in the world?"

They soon neared the place where Soufflé had stayed during the day, but she suddenly asked a bizarre question.

The most terrifying thing?

The question left even Fu Qian a bit bewildered.

"For us, isn't it those fairy tale dreams? If we aren't careful, we fall into those illusions and can't get out."

"Well said. But remember, illusions aren't always the most terrifying things."

In the darkness, Soufflé's voice drifted over faintly.

"What's more terrifying is a false reality. Everything clearly exists, yet it pieces together a fake story. It will truly devour your life and make you deny your own existence."

"I don't really understand."

"Are you a bit curious about why I came here alone?"

Pulling Fu Qian to hide in a corner, Soufflé pointed ahead.

"A little."

"Actually, I realized a long time ago that this world isn't real."

'Is this girl really that sharp?!'

Soufflé's words gave Fu Qian a shock.

"Not only are there very few people here, but I also get the feeling that people around me only start moving when I arrive at a certain spot."

"I can even faintly sense that they are all observing you..."

"...And then?"

The more Fu Qian listened, the more something felt off.

"Have you ever considered a possibility?"

Soufflé lowered her head, her tone solemn.

"In the past, we always laughed at you for being obsessed with the fairy tale of Snow White. But actually, everything Mother said was true. We really are Snow White."

"And we are imprisoned in this place. Everyone around us is watching us, keeping us from finding Mother."

'These five sisters really are...'

After hearing Soufflé's explanation, Fu Qian was left momentarily at a loss for what expression to make.

'As expected, the more normal someone appears, the more abnormal they actually are?'
