Chapter 455: Wasteland Arc (17)

What was with this pose of complete enlightenment, as if she were about to become a Buddha on the spot!

Faced with Sybil's drastic transformation, Fu Qian inwardly groaned.

Judging by his own recent experience, he was almost certain this was no simple mood swing. Something had genuinely happened to her.

It seemed it really wasn't due to his unique constitution. That strange transformation applied to everyone equally.

But what was the trigger for this transformation? Looking in the Mirror?

The chances were high. For one, he had only felt that strange sensation after seeing his reflection in the Mirror.

Given Sybil's warning right before they moved out, the odds that she had looked in the Mirror were extremely high.

But if that were true, what about the others?

Fu Qian glanced at Elena beside him.

At first, he had just thought her presence was unusually quiet. Now, he suspected it wasn't that simple.

Beyond her, the others were just as dead silent. So, was he standing among a bunch of Saints right now?

Having finished laying out the precautions, Sybil calmly assigned each team their respective search areas.

Fu Qian's group was assigned the first passage on the right.

Besides Elena, his only other teammate was a middle-aged man wearing a black overcoat and deerskin gloves. At a glance, the man's strength was clearly nothing to scoff at.

That was likely why those two had previously operated as a pair.

Sybil had essentially given him a freeloading spot.

The space remained quiet. After exchanging brief glances, the various teams moved out one by one.

From start to finish, no one else seemed to notice the drastic contrast in Sybil's demeanor.

This was exactly what it felt like to board a pirate ship with no way off.

Snark aside, Fu Qian kept his mouth shut. He simply followed Elena and the man in the overcoat into the passage.

This passage was narrower than the one they had entered through, and sloped at a slight angle. However, the surrounding decorations and patterns clearly matched the rest.

His two teammates marched forward as if bathed in a halo, striking a completely fearless posture. The dim light did nothing to slow their steps, and neither of them bothered to call out to Fu Qian.

Fu Qian felt no disappointment at this. He strolled leisurely at the back, taking in his surroundings.

Meanwhile, the bizarre state of the entire team naturally brought to mind what had happened right after he entered this mission.

Every person who had entered the Ruins on the first day had killed themselves in their own way.

Including himself.

Looking back, could the cause of those suicides have been related to this exact emotional state?

After all, he hadn't found a single Feather or anything of the sort in his living quarters.

On that point, Ji Yicheng's judgment might have been mistaken.

As he pondered, the trio covered a fair distance down the passage. The ground leveled out once more, and a large door, identical in shape to the one outside, blocked their path.

Judging from its tightly shut state, no one had explored this area before.

Brother Overcoat, who had been leading the way, carefully touched it through his gloves. After confirming nothing was amiss, he applied more force.

However, the door seemed incredibly heavy and did not budge.

The man naturally turned his gaze back to Fu Qian, a smile on his face.

"I need your help."

With that Priest-like expression and tone, if he had just added "my child," it would have been classic.

Staring at Brother Overcoat, who looked as if he were glowing with light, Fu Qian sighed inwardly and didn't refuse.

He stepped forward, and under their combined strength, the sealed door was slowly pushed open.

The loud noise was exceptionally grating in the silent Underground.

"Thank you. How should I address you?"

Brother Overcoat seemed completely oblivious to the racket. Pulling his hands back, he looked at Fu Qian and asked naturally.

In fact, it wasn't just him; such a piercing noise was grating enough to directly induce displeasure.

But at this exact moment, it felt like nothing more than a gentle breeze to Fu Qian, completely unable to leave a single trace in his peaceful mind.

"Just call me Mr. Fu."

Amidst this unprecedented sense of tranquility, Fu Qian replied with easy amiability.

"Alright."

Brother Overcoat kept smiling, showing absolutely no intention of introducing himself in return.

This harmonious and friendly scene felt like a gathering of churchgoers. It was truly out of step with these dark Underground Ruins.

Yet, at Fu Qian's answer, Elena—who had been silent all along—seemed to think of something and raised her head to look over again.

Fu Qian wasn't surprised by her reaction. Back in Sir William's death game, he had given her and Cross the exact same answer.

In fact, he had said it on purpose.

Sure enough, even with that spark of doubt, Elena's expression remained ethereally holy.

The effect was potent!

Paying her no further mind, Fu Qian followed right behind Brother Overcoat into the open doorway.

...

What kind of design was this?

Beyond the door lay a rectangular hall. That did not surprise Fu Qian.

Unlike the hall with the Mirror, however, this place had row upon row of square pillars.

Just as Fu Qian was wondering about the purpose of these pillars, an anomaly occurred.

Brilliant white lights flared to life atop the pillars simultaneously, instantly illuminating the entire hall as brightly as day.

So these were actually lamp posts? This design was completely unheard of!

Fu Qian carefully studied the scene before him.

The light at the tops of the pillars carried a warm, genial air, like miniature suns.

Bathed in their light, Fu Qian felt as if all discomfort and inner shadows were being entirely driven away.

Like a Saint blessed by a Deity, his consciousness was flashing with Bright Light, without a single trace of gloom.

"This is..."

Elena stepped in behind him at that moment, freezing in her tracks.

The next moment, she reached out a trembling hand, as if to receive the blessing of this light.

As for Brother Overcoat, who stood at the very front? Uh, he reached out with both hands.

Wearing matching faces of intoxication, the two maintained their poses and walked silently toward the pillars.

Bang!

Amidst this pilgrimage-like scene, a highly inappropriate sound rang out.

Amid a flash of fire, Fu Qian raised his hand and directly fired a shot.

Having committed such an outright sacrilegious act, he calmly lowered his arm and blew on the muzzle.

Though he looked relaxed, the act of drawing the gun had not been easy.

The beautiful holiness brought by the Bright Light had almost turned tangible, constantly melting away his intent to strike.

Fortunately, blaspheming a Deity was something he had done countless times already.

And the target of Fu Qian's shot was none other than the closest pillar.

Of course, a revolver's accuracy was limited. At this distance, he hadn't expected to actually hit the target; he just wanted to see the reaction.

Following the gunshot, the miniature sun atop the pillar actually flew upward, tracing a graceful arc through the air.
