Chapter 979: Reversing the True Culprit (3)

"Out of control... Professor Fu, you might as well explain that more clearly."

As Fu Qian provided his reasoning, Lanaya breathed a sigh of relief. Li Weixuan, however, narrowed his eyes and motioned for him to continue.

"Professor Yi'an said it himself. His discovery isn't just safe and highly efficient. Its greatest advantage is its ability to utilize a resource fundamentally useless to transcendents—ordinary people."

Fu Qian didn't hold back.

"Once that final step is taken, the underlying implications will stretch far beyond a single demigod."

"I don't know how the other mentors in Linghui view this kind of academic ethics issue, but I can imagine the Night Watchers' perspective—and the resulting uncertainty of their attitude toward Linghui Courtyard."

"So in my judgment, as long as Yi'an proved his method could actually forge a demigod, Linghui Courtyard would most likely cease to exist—regardless of whether he lived or died afterward."

"Fearmongering!"

Professor Yang interjected before Fu Qian could even finish, though he lacked his earlier confidence.

To the members of Linghui Courtyard—who shared the same spiritual discipline yet could find no path forward—the temptation would be unimaginably massive!

In fact, just as Fu Qian said, whether those who knew the secret could resist the temptation was no longer important. What mattered was how the Night Watchers would view it.

And how they themselves believed the Night Watchers would view it.

This was an almost unsolvable chain of suspicion. Winning a war of words had lost all meaning.

In truth, the way everyone from Linghui Courtyard visibly deflated after Fu Qian finished speaking made the answer in their hearts perfectly clear.

"I understand what you're saying."

Finally, amid the dead silence, Li Weixuan let out a sigh.

"Actually, bringing so many of you here today was my initiative."

He looked toward the audience, his gaze sweeping across the crowd from Linghui Courtyard.

"I can even speak frankly: we had already guessed portions of what Professor Fu just described."

"Given the terrible implications behind this, today's event really should have been conducted in secret. The fewer people who knew, the better. But I did it anyway."

"The reason is simple. I decided to let every single one of you in on the secret."

"You all possess immense curiosity, and I don't want to waste my energy constantly guarding against it."

Before anyone realized it, Li Weixuan had fully unfurled the imposing majesty of an Academy vice dean.

"Because of this, you will face extremely strict restrictions in certain areas going forward, but at least Linghui Courtyard can be preserved."

"Don't talk about leaving the Academy for freedom or anything of the sort. Even if you did, the only difference would be that the ones restricting you would change from the Academy to the Night Watchers. And everyone here knows their style..."

Truly decisive and ruthless.

Listening from the sidelines, Fu Qian sighed in admiration.

Li Weixuan's attitude was already clear—he agreed with Fu Qian's view on the severe consequences.

In reality, the rest of Linghui originally had another choice: leave the Academy without ever learning the contents of Yi'an's research.

But that wouldn't have meant much either. The underlying nature of this incident was simply too severe. At best, the Night Watchers' surveillance of them would have been only slightly less intense.

And clearly, Li Weixuan had no intention of asking for their opinions. He had rejected that option for them outright.

"The same goes for everyone else. If even a sliver of the information you just heard is leaked, the Night Watchers and the Academy will join forces to hunt you down to the absolute limit."

Li Weixuan's warning quickly expanded to include everyone present.

Though he wasn't a demigod yet, his aura was so overwhelming that for a moment, almost no one dared look him in the eye.

But it was only almost.

"I understand what Dean Li means, and I agree with the severity of the situation you described, but I just have one question."

A moment later, a vaguely familiar voice rang out.

Pale face, eerie eyes—at a glance, it was none other than Ni Huayuan, the investigation team member they had worked with, and the one who had clashed with Cass on multiple occasions.

Living up to his reputation as a contrarian, he gritted his teeth and stepped forward, forcefully weathering Li Weixuan's oppressive aura.

"Professor Fu told a good story. But just as you said yourself, Yi'an was only one step away from becoming a demigod. You didn't even call for help, so how did you kill him?"

"Based on what we know, from the moment you broke in to the very end, only a few minutes passed at most. Yi'an didn't even have a chance to escape."

"Doesn't this single point make the story you just told impossible to hold up?"

He then pointed a finger at Fu Qian, sneering repeatedly.

"I imagine Professor Fu wasn't the only one who struck back then, was he?"

"How so?"

Faced with such an accusation, not only did Fu Qian not rush to argue, but he actively invited further explanation.

Had the interesting part finally begun?

"Let me tell you the true story."

Ni Huayuan's gaze was like a knife, his tone filled with grief and indignation.

"I've confirmed it. That bizarre ball hasn't been running for long—in fact, it started just slightly after Professor Fu joined the Academy!"

"And its true master, our very own Professor Fu, was never worried about his own actions. Because as long as nothing goes wrong, no transcendent is going to pay special attention to the state of ordinary people."

"However, what he didn't expect was that there really would be someone who treated ordinary people and transcendents equally, someone who explored the mysteries of the mind and crossed paths with a woman named Lily because of it."

"After discovering this, Professor Fu panicked. He knew the consequences if his actions were exposed."

"To avoid that situation, he ultimately decided to use the simplest and most brutal method, and found helpers for the task."

"In the end, Professor Yi'an's spirit of exploration, along with his equal respect for ordinary people, brought a fatal disaster upon him. Even his corpse was deliberately polluted and twisted."

"And after it happened, in order to give the Night Watchers an explanation as quickly as possible and put on a show of compliance, Linghui was chosen as a scapegoat, while the Butcher became a hero..."

After recounting all this, Ni Huayuan stared fixedly at Fu Qian.

"It's just a pity that, as a member of Linghui, I will never allow it to suffer such an injustice."

"Unless Professor Fu can clearly explain how he killed Yi'an all by himself, your story has absolutely no credibility!"

This speech was nothing short of impassioned. After Ni Huayuan finished, no one refuted him for a long moment.

In fact, judging by their expressions, quite a few people were already pondering this possibility.

As for his "sharp" questioning, Fu Qian—despite being the person involved and facing a sea of suspicious gazes—had no intention of answering.

There was no need. From here on out, his only task was to be a good spectator.

"Idiot!"

A moment later, a voice rang out from the Linghui side. It was actually Weilong, who had been silent all this time.

Letting out a heavy sigh, the demigod stared at Ni Huayuan, looking utterly resentful that iron cannot become steel.

"I still had some doubts initially, but I didn't expect you to jump out so impatiently on your own."

"Greedy and stupid. Truly courting one's own death."

"The person who actually killed Yi'an... was you, wasn't it?"
