Olivia.
Palmer remembered the name, and even more so the face as vague as a dream encounter. Even though several years had passed since their first meeting, when Palmer saw her again, the once blurred memories became clear, overlapping and shifting in his eyes.
"Damn! What’s going on!"
As a Clark, Palmer’s vigilance against the Night Race was etched in his blood. Even though Bologue had given him a heads-up, his reaction was still intense, as if he wanted to immediately press a dagger against Olivia’s throat and cut fiercely.
"You bastard! You bastard!"
Palmer glanced at Olivia, then at Bologue, his hand waving the dagger incessantly.
Bologue guessed Palmer wanted to say something silly like, "How did someone like you end up with the Night Race," but clearly, the extreme development had left him incoherent.
So much so that Palmer completely ignored the blaring alarm.
"Quiet down, Palmer."
Bologue reached out again to cover Palmer’s mouth, while he gave Olivia a knowing look.
The two hadn’t been "partners" for long, but Olivia immediately understood Bologue’s intention. The surrounding shadows writhed and rolled, weaving into a pitch-black curtain, enveloping the three of them in darkness.
"Deep breaths, deep breaths. My God, do all you Clarks react like this when you see the Night Race?" Bologue thought Palmer was like a startled dog.
"If... if you had an endless feud that spanned generations, you’d react like I did."
Palmer held his chest, his breathing gradually steadied, and he became much clearer, with a newfound wisdom gleaming in his eyes.
"What happened earlier? Your reaction wasn’t so intense then," Olivia retorted, "not only were you engaging with me, but even flirting."
Palmer’s face turned embarrassed, glancing at Bologue out of the corner of his eye. Just as he was about to say something, Olivia, seemingly teasing him, mentioned that name again.
"Have you calmed down, Bologue Clarks?"
Palmer corrected, "Palmer, just call me Palmer."
Olivia let out a victorious laugh.
"And another thing," Palmer added to Bologue, "next time, give me more of a hint."
"What is it?"
"Bologue!" Palmer lowered his voice seriously, "A pure-blood Night Race suddenly crawled out from my most trusted partner’s shadow, and the two of you happily pulled me into the shadows... this is the start of a murder in a movie script."
"Do you think I would betray you?" Bologue countered.
Palmer paused, shaking his head, "No, I don’t think so."
He added, "But it really is scary!"
Bologue sighed helplessly, scrutinizing Palmer’s face, which was filled with panic. Bologue realized that ever since they arrived here... no, ever since Palmer became a Negative Power User, he had been exceptionally tense.
Tightly wound, like a string that could not be loosened.
Bologue didn’t have the time to pay attention to his partner’s psychological issues, so he could only remember this silently and begin to carry out his task.
"Quiet, listen carefully."
Bologue signaled the two to listen intently.
The loud alarm echoed across the Land of Secrets, a piercing noise heard by everyone in the city. Although many High Towers had gone dark, the Aurora Path struggled to sprout several branches, lighting up with small signal towers.
In this tense atmosphere, Olivia nudged Palmer with her shoulder, watching his nervous demeanor, she extended her hand with a smirk.
"Pleasure to work with you."
At the moment, Palmer wasn’t sure what Olivia meant by "pleasure to work with you," but it was clear that his partner, the renowned Bologue, had already made some agreement with this pure-blood Night Race in secret.
"I just hope my old man doesn’t find out about this."
Palmer mumbled, but out of trust for Bologue, he still stretched out his hand and shook it with Olivia’s, giving it a gentle shake twice.
"Even if your old man knew, he wouldn’t have any objections," Bologue refocused his attention, continuing, "I should have mentioned before, she’s Serey’s daughter."
"Wow," hearing the name of that bastard Serey, Palmer’s wariness toward Olivia diminished considerably.
He marvelled, "Amazing, Serey actually has a daughter; I thought you were joking with me."
"Would I joke about something like that?" Bologue retorted.
"Gentlemen!"
Olivia placed her hands on their shoulders, loudly interrupting their endless conversation.
"I was wondering what kind of partner a cold type like you would have," Olivia teased, "you two really do complement each other."
Not giving them any chance to speak, Olivia continued, "Let’s not discuss Serey or whatever for now."
Perhaps desensitized, Olivia found that she could fluently speak that name.
She continued, "The All Secrets Order has sounded the alarm, something must have happened... do you guys think this is aimed at us? After all, we directly left the team, potentially drawing their attention."
"Even if it did draw attention, there was no need for such a city-wide alarm, right?" Bologue contemplated, "something more dire must have occurred, or perhaps, for some reason, our departure is exceedingly dangerous to them."
