*****

The afternoon sunlight streaked into the room through the dusty windows, painting golden lines across the floor.

Kael sat cross-legged with his eyes closed, his eyelids glowing blue with the activation of Godly Focus. One of his hands was raised before him, golden flames surrounding the limb like a flowing river of liquid fire.

It had been a week since he started his training, since he started to go for what the system had deemed impossible.

Because he only had one element he could focus on, Kael's entire attention was on fire.

Naturally, his first line of thought was using the knowledge he gained in school, and his thoughts fell immediately on...

Combustion.

That was the foundation of ordinary fire. Fuel, heat, oxygen; remove any one of these three components and the reaction would collapse.

A spark supplied enough energy to begin the process. Molecules break apart and new bonds are formed, while energy is released. Heat generated more heat, and the cycle continued.

Simple.

At least on paper.

He focused on every detail he could remember from his studies; the transfer of thermal energy, oxidation, molecular excitation, expansion, radiation, convection. Every concept he knew was dragged to the forefront of his mind, and under the effects of Godly Focus, his thoughts became frighteningly clear.

Just like his sister enjoyed reading books of high school level despite being an elementary pupil, Kael had also dived into books far above his level.

Yet no matter what he brought to the forefront of his mind or the ideas he examined from countless angles, nothing happened.

The flames continued to dance around his hand exactly as before.

It was then he realized it.

Combustion wasn't the fire law, and was merely one way fire manifested.

But he wasn't disheartened. If he could achieve what the system deemed impossible in just a week, then there would be no challenge.

He immediately pivoted, his thoughts falling on Primordial Instinct. With his mythical skill activated, recalling every detail of when the instinct had taken over his body was easy.

He replayed every movement, every dodge, every attack, every shift of muscle and bone. Yet no matter how many times he analyzed it, he found himself facing another wall.

He could remember it.

But he couldn't understand it.

It was as if something deeper guided those movements, something beyond logic, something ancient and instinctual.

He released a sigh, the pent-up frustration within him abating slightly.

'This is the last path I can think of,' Kael thought to himself, a flicker of hesitation in his heart.

But that didn't last long.

'Even if it doesn't work, I will find another way.'

His mind made up, Kael deactivated his skill and activated it once more.

His entire focus fell on his heart. He watched as something strange pooled out of it before following pathways he couldn't observe clearly. The strange energy moved directly to his hand as if it already knew its destination.

Kael watched how golden flames formed around his limb immediately when the strange energy arrived.

A speechless look appeared on his face.

He was stonewalled.

'What the hell happened?'

He turned the skill off and on once more, yet Kael couldn't make out how the fire was conjured. It was almost as if he was an audience trying to make out how a magician, the very best of his kind, was performing his magic.

His eyes flew open as he deactivated Godly Focus. Veins strained on his head, and the frustration within his dark-as-night eyes became more evident.

It was then the sound hit.

He had been so focused that the voices, cries, and chirps faded into nothing thanks to Godly Focus. But now that he was back, the sounds flowed naturally into his senses.

"Here, here, throw it!" A cute and excited voice rang out. If one heard it, they would never guess it would come out of such a shy girl as Sophia.

"Chirp!"

Kael watched as a small ball flew through the air, Py trying to catch it to no avail.

"Hahaha!" Sophia jumped and caught the object in her soft hands.

"Chirp!"

Py released another cry before diving for the girl, but Sophia giggled before quickly passing it back to Rose.

Seeing these three enjoy themselves while he had been painstakingly training for nothing to show for it, the bubbling frustration within him seemed to want to spill over. But he quickly suppressed it once more and stood up.

'Let's get some fresh air.'

He deftly moved across the room, careful not to interrupt them, when a small ball hit him squarely in the back of his head.

"Hehehe!" A chuckle filled with mischievousness rang out behind him.

"Is that a metal block? The ball almost deflated."

Kael's lips twitched. Still, he controlled himself and kept walking.

"Chirp!"

Py flew past Kael while trying to catch another throw.

For some reason, that sight hit Kael even more than the ball had.

'So much for being my partner!'

Kael barely took another step when the ball connected with the side of his face.

This time, not only did Rose laugh out, even Py chirped incessantly.

'That is it!'

Kael finally reached his limit. With a thought, he summoned Py back to himself.

A piercing cry rang out, filled with unwillingness, but it was soon cut short, a crimson light flying to Kael's ear to form an elegant earring.

"What are you doing?!"

A scream came from his back, but Kael ignored it and moved towards the entrance.

A body flew at him from behind before Rose wrapped around his right leg like a koala.

"Let her go!"

A flicker of irritation surfaced on Kael's face.

"Let me go!"

"No, you let her go!"

Kael threw his leg around, but Rose held tight like a tick refusing to let go.

It would have been a funny sight if it wasn't for the glare both parties were sending at each other.

"Is that how you want to do it?" Kael glowered down at his sister.

Fed up, he directly walked with the baggage on him, his steps wobbling and comical as though one leg belonged to someone else.

About to leave, his eye caught sight of Sophia standing still in the far corner.

"Haa!"

Sighing, he turned to see the golden-haired girl looking sad, her head slightly lowered as she gripped her left arm with her other hand.

'Damn it! This is not fair!'
