ENERGI: THE PRIMORDIAL CONDUIT[OP MC, APOCALYPSE, SURVIVAL, AND LITRPG]
CHAPTER 90: AMBUSHED'How?!' Kael's mind churned furiously. Yet no matter how he thought about it, he couldn't understand.
'Wasn't it said he had no wife and daughter?'
Of course, Kael had heard rumors that he had a secret daughter, but such a claim had never been proven. It was why many had been devastated when they heard news of his death. Such a mighty hero had left behind no heir.
"Are you sure?" Kael couldn't help but ask again, his voice holding a slight tremor.
Principal Martin didn't respond for a while, but when he did, he answered with a question of his own.
"What do you know about the Great War?"
Kael rubbed his cheek. "I don't know much. What I heard is that the Aurelius Empire and the United Federation banded together to wage war against the Helios Consortium. The latter was later destroyed, and the Government was established."
The principal nodded. "That is what the public indeed knows."
Kael raised a brow, but he didn't interrupt. He knew if the principal truly intended to talk to him, he would. And he was proven right in the next moment.
"The Blue Planet consists of three massive landmasses, and each of these three continents has a major power that rules over it." He paused before he continued.
"The Aurelius Empire, a centralized monarchy, rules over one. They boast unmatched military might. The United Federation, a coalition of cities and many nations, is another superpower that rules over another continent. They ruled the world in terms of research, science, and technology."
The principal lingered for another second or so before he continued.
"And finally, the Helios Consortium. They were the major power that ruled over this continent. They consisted of a collection of mega-corporations that controlled global trade. But they bit off more than they could chew, and paid the price for it." The principal couldn't help but sigh when he reached the end.
"What do you mean?" Kael couldn't help himself from asking.
"It was over two decades ago. There were rumors that an object had torn through space and descended upon the earth."
Kael's eyes slowly widened at the ridiculousness he was hearing.
'Why is this going from major history to the opening plot of one of those cliche novels he had read many times?'
Despite his thoughts, he listened raptly to what the principal was saying.
"I am not sure of this, though. After all, I wasn't here yet."
Kael's heart skipped a beat.
'So he isn't from here? He came from another continent? No wonder many knew nothing about him.'
"But what I do know is that the Helios Consortium tried to monopolize something that drew the attention of the other powers. But how could their paid private armies compare to the Empire's military? Not to mention when the two powers banded together? It was a total slaughter. Millions of lives were lost. Many cities became uninhabitable from nuclear bombardments, and the skies cried for the innocent souls who were swallowed by the flames of war."
The principal sighed again, a forlorn look on his face. Even Kael had a somber expression at this point.
"The Helios Consortium was eventually destroyed. Many thought the war would end there, but it was then the true nightmare descended. There was no longer any law and order. The few powerheads reinstated were simply puppets placed there. The weak were oppressed, food and other necessities became scarce, and chaos spread unchecked. You can never imagine how miserable life was then."
The principal finally turned to look at Kael.
"It was around that time I came here. I couldn't stomach the idea of innocent children dying from hunger and experiencing such suffering."
Kael's heart filled slightly with warmth.
He had thought the principal was weak for allowing the others to leave to grow stronger while he remained behind to watch over the weak. Only now did he realize he was wrong.
Gravely wrong.
'He is not weak. He is simply kind.'
The bald-headed principal could see the complicated emotions swirling within Kael's eyes, but he merely smiled at the sight and continued.
"But I wasn't the only one who rose to help."
Kael focused back on the old man's words.
"A young hero rose, and with his great charisma, he pulled many like-minded people to his side. Together, they made an agreement with the powers oppressing the few cities, now called territories, that remained. That was how the Government was established."
The principal looked up to the side once again, his next words containing raw emotions Kael couldn't understand.
"Unfortunately, even the brightest light casts the darkest shadows. That hero inspired millions, but he also bred envy wherever he went. His brilliance was too blinding, and his accomplishments too overwhelming. Men who could never hope to stand beside him instead chose to stand behind him with daggers hidden in their sleeves."
Martin shook his head before turning to Kael once more.
"Remember this, Kael. The waters of our world run deeper than you could ever imagine."
Kael wondered why the principal suddenly said such a thing, but when he saw the old man was about to continue, he remained quiet.
Martin opened his mouth to tell how such a mighty hero had been plotted against, ruined, and hatefully murdered, when it happened.
- BOOOM!
The sound of an explosion came from behind them.
"What?" Martin suddenly snapped to attention. The sad emotions on his face instantly gave way to focus.
Kael also quickly shifted his focus to his perception. Only when he saw Nathaniel and Natalie were still in the room behind him and safe did he relax slightly.
By then, he realized the sound had come from where the principal's group was. And it seemed he wasn't the only one who sensed it, as with a bright purple flash, the old man disappeared.
Kael sighed loudly, a conflicted light flashing within his eyes.
Now that he had heard all this, he wasn't sure how to treat Rachel. He rubbed Py's feathers, who was still in his embrace, the warmth gradually pushing away the bad feeling in his heart.
'Let's go see what this is about and help the old man if needed.'
He had barely had the thought when his instincts screamed at him.
At the same time, Py, who had been chirping lowly at Kael's soft touch, suddenly snapped her eyes open.
Alas, both of them reacted too late.
A stream of liquid metal suddenly wrapped around Kael's right foot from below, and before he could react, he was violently yanked into the skies.
