The next exchange nearly tore the wooden sword from Eldrin’s hands.

Crack!

He staggered backward.

Ender came after him immediately.

Another strike.

Eldrin twisted aside.

The wooden blade passed close enough to brush his shoulder.

He stepped inside Ender’s reach and struck toward his ribs.

Ender blocked.

Barely.

His eyes widened for a fraction of a second.

Eldrin saw it.

Got him.

He changed direction, swept low, and forced Ender to retreat two steps.

For a moment, the difference between them disappeared.

Then Ender grinned.

"Better."

He raised his sword.

Eldrin’s expression tightened.

He knew exactly what came next.

Ender charged.

THUD!!!!!

The collision sent Eldrin’s arms numb.

Damn.

Ender was stronger.

But raw power was mindless. Eldrin had skill.

Years of brutal, relentless repetition had taught him how to conserve momentum, how to read the faint twitch of a shoulder before a blow launched, and how to redirect force rather than absorb it.

The problem was that Ender was learning.

Every morning they sparred, Ender absorbed Eldrin’s efficiency. He was older, possessed a heavier frame, had already spent two years at the Continental Academy, and had unlocked his mana core.

He wasn’t even using his magic yet.

If he actually takes this seriously, Eldrin thought, his pulse hammering in his throat, I’m done.

Ender swung again, a crushing downward chop. Eldrin crossed his guard to catch the blow, but the force drove him straight to one knee. Dust exploded outward from beneath his joint.

"Get up!" Ender laughed breathlessly, pressing down hard on the crossed wood. "You’re slipping, Eldrin!"

Eldrin gritted his teeth.

"AHHHH!"

With a ragged growl, Eldrin drove his hips forward.

He exploded forward.

Eldrin launched a savage flurry left high strike, right thrust, low sweep, step in elbow check. He stopped holding back his speed. He stopped conserving his breath.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Ender’s playful smirk wavered. Forced onto the defensive, the noble was driven back three paces, his parries becoming shorter, louder, and harder.

"Now that’s more like it!" Ender shouted, his own breathing coming fast.

Eldrin’s lungs burned. His vision vibrated at the edges. His body was screaming at him to stop, but his mind refused to listen.

He needed more.

More strength.

More speed.

More control.

Whatever it took.

He couldn’t remain like this.

Eldrin stepped forward.

I need to catch up.

He swung.

Ender blocked.

Eldrin’s knees trembled..

He attacked again.

His foot slipped.

The world tilted.

Eldrin tried to recover.

His body refused.

The wooden sword fell from his hand.

Ender lowered his own weapon.

"Eldrin?"

Eldrin took one step.

Then another.

His legs finally gave out.

He collapsed forward.

The last thing he heard was Ender’s startled voice.

"Hey.....!"

The ground rushed toward him.

His consciousness began slipping away.

Yet even as everything became dark...

One thought remained.

Clearer than everything else.

Stronger than the pain.

Stronger than exhaustion.

Stronger than fear.

Take it back.

His father’s face flashed before him.

The frozen body.

The sword.

The estate.

Novaryn.

Everything that had been taken from him.

His home.

His family.

His freedom.

His future.

His name.

Eldrin’s fingers curled weakly against the dirt.

I’ll take it back.

His vision disappeared.

Everything.

And then.....

darkness.

....

There was no ground.

No sky.

No sound.

Eldrin was falling.

He couldn’t tell how long it had been.

There was nothing around him except darkness.

A place where there was nothing for his eyes to hold onto.

Eldrin tried to move.

His arms responded.

He tried to shout, no voice came out.

Am I dreaming?

He continued falling.

No sensation of movement, and yet he knew he was falling.

Then.....

Something appeared below him.

A light.

At first, it was little more than a distant point.

Then it grew.

And grew.

The farther he fell, the larger it became.

Eldrin couldn’t look away.

The light was getting closer.

Too close.

He instinctively raised his arms, folding them over his face.

What is that?

The light swallowed him.

And then.....

Everything stopped.

Even his thoughts seemed to freeze for a moment.

Eldrin slowly lowered his arms.

His eyes opened.

He was standing, he stared at his hands, then at his feet.

There was nothing beneath them.

Yet somehow he wasn’t falling anymore.

"What..."

His voice sounded strangely small in the emptiness.

Eldrin looked around.

"Where am I?"

Something moved above him.

He slowly raised his head.

And froze.

An enormous red eye stared down at him.

It was so large that Eldrin couldn’t see its edges.

The eye hung within the darkness itself.

Just watching him.

Eldrin’s heart began pounding.

"What are you?"

Then....

Boom.

Something appeared in front of him.

Eldrin flinched and stepped backward.

A gate.

Tall.

Ancient.

It seemed to have appeared from nowhere.

Before he could understand what he was looking at....

A second gate manifested beside it.

Then a third.

Three gates stood before him in absolute silence.

Eldrin stared at them.

There were words carved across each one.

He didn’t recognize the language.

He had never seen those characters before.

Yet somehow...

He understood them.

The first gate read:

PAST

The second:

PRESENT

And the third:

FUTURE

Eldrin’s breathing slowed.

He looked from one gate to another.

Then slowly raised his eyes toward the enormous red eye above him.....
