Mina finally opened her eyes. For several seconds, she did not move. Her vision was blurry. Her mind felt heavy, and everything around her seemed unfamiliar.
She stared at the ceiling above her, trying to understand where she was.
Her confusion quickly turned into disorientation. This was not her room. These were not the bright walls she knew. There were no decorations, posters, and none of the dolls she used to see whenever she woke up in the morning.
Instead, she saw rows of medical beds, white walls had become dull with age, a gray ceiling stretched above her, strange medical equipment stood beside several beds, while tubes and infusion bags hung nearby.
Other people were sleeping around her.
Everything was unfamiliar.
Panic slowly began creeping into Mina’s mind.
"What happened?" she thought. Her eyes widened. "Where am I?!"
Her breathing became faster. Mina quickly looked around, desperately searching for something familiar. Anything that could tell her this was only a nightmare.
But she didn’t find anything. Then, a realization struck her.
It came with such force that Mina felt pain explode inside her head.
Her body fell back against the bed. She stared at the ceiling with wide, unmoving eyes.
"Everything is over..." Her lips trembled. "My parents..."
The memories returned. She remembers seeing the world changing, the streets filled with monsters, people screaming in despair. Everyone was trying to survive through whatever means they could.
Then Mina remembered something else: Her parents.
Her parents who had...
Her breathing stopped and she gasped.
They had become monsters... And she... she had killed them... With her own hands.
"AAAAAAAHHH!" Mina screamed. Her voice echoed throughout the infirmary.
Painful memories flooded her mind all at once. Her heart filled with sorrow, anger, guilt, and fear. Everything she had experienced during the apocalypse returned without warning.
It felt impossible for one person to carry so much pain alone.
"AAAAAAAH!" Mina continued screaming.
Her throat began hurting but she didn’t care. Tears appeared in her wide eyes as she stared into the distance, almost as if she could see the events of the apocalypse happening in front of her again.
A woman dressed in a white nurse’s uniform immediately rushed toward her. She grabbed Mina and held her down.
Despite Mina’s frantic struggling, the nurse restrained her without any visible difficulty.
"Calm down, girl," the nurse said firmly. "You’re safe now."
But Mina could not hear her.
"AAAAAH!"
Her body continued struggling.
Another person approached. It was a man.
He stopped beside Mina’s bed and looked at her with a grim expression, as if he already understood what was happening without anyone needing to explain it.
"This girl had it rough," he said. Then he placed his hand against Mina’s forehead. A soft white light began flowing from his palm.
The light entered Mina’s body. A few seconds passed and her movements gradually slowed. Her breathing became calmer and her eyes slowly closed again.
Mina fell unconscious again.
The nurse finally released her and stepped back and let out a sigh.
"The trauma hit her hard," the man said.
"Yes." The nurse looked at Mina with sympathy. "It seems what she experienced was particularly severe."
The two of them didn’t find the situation unusual. They had seen it many times before.
The people rescued from the Selection Stage had all experienced terrible things. Many of them had lost their families. Some of them had watched their friends die. Others had been forced to kill in order to survive.
The trauma did not simply disappear after they reached a safe place. For some people, it never truly healed. They simply had to learn how to continue living with it.
"We need to give her more time," the man said. "I’ll have to provide more treatment when she wakes up again."
The nurse nodded. "I’ll inform her friend first. He woke up earlier and seems to be doing much better."
The man glanced toward her. "His name is Jack, right?"
"Yes."
The nurse gave Mina one last look before turning toward the exit and she left the infirmary.
She was going to find Jack and tell him that Mina had finally awakened.

Clyde entered the infirmary quietly. The familiar smell of medicine and antiseptic filled the air. Rows of beds stretched through the room, most of them occupied by injured survivors who were still recovering from their experiences in the Selection Stage.
His eyes immediately found Mina. She was lying on one of the beds near the wall. Her face was pale.
Even while sleeping, she did not look peaceful. Her expression tense, as if the memories inside her mind had followed her into unconsciousness.
Clyde stopped beside her bed and looked down at her silently. The nurse had already told him what happened.
Mina had awakened and started screaming.
Clyde could clearly imagine what she saw. Her own parents had turned into monsters and Mina was forced to kill them with her own hands.
Clyde’s expression darkened. He felt sorry for her. But more than that, he knew the pain would not disappear anytime soon. Perhaps it would never completely disappear.
Clyde clenched his fist. Anger rose inside him toward the Higher Beings even more. They were the reason all of this had happened. They had turned human lives into entertainment.
People like Mina had lost everything because of them. Families were destroyed, children were forced to become killers.
Clyde’s jaw tightened. "I’ll destroy all of you. No matter how long it takes," he thought. His eyes became cold. The promise inside his heart became even stronger.
He would grow stronger. He would find every source of power available to him. And eventually, he would bring the Higher Beings down.
Mina suddenly opened her eyes.
Clyde immediately looked toward her. He had expected her to panic and scream again.
The nurse had warned him that Mina’s trauma could return the moment she woke up. Clyde was already prepared to restrain her or call for help if she started screaming again.
But Mina did nothing. She just stared at the ceiling. Her eyes remained open.
Clyde stood beside her bed silently. Something about her expression made him hesitate.
Mina was awake. But she looked as though a part of her was still somewhere else.
