The group continued deeper into the burning city, moving carefully with great vigilance through streets buried beneath soot and ash.
The more they explored, the more Clyde realized that this place looked strangely familiar.
The buildings were not the medieval structures he had encountered in most of the Ruins before this in his previous missions. Tall buildings rose on both sides of the streets, some of them still reaching dozens of floors into the smoke-filled sky. Several skyscrapers still stood despite being partially destroyed with their glass windows shattered and their steel frames exposed beneath the flames.
This had once been a modern world. But now there was almost nothing left of it.
Entire blocks had been consumed by fire. Some buildings collapsed onto the streets, others were still standing as enormous blackened shells.
Flames still burned inside several structures, occasionally sending chunks of burning debris falling onto the streets below.
Clyde looked around silently. Most of the destruction seemed to have been caused by fire.
The thought immediately reminded him of another place he had visited before.
He remembers visiting a world consumed by flames. That was where he had once discovered one of Asmodeus’s artifacts.
Clyde’s eyes narrowed slightly. Could this be another one of Asmodeus’s experiments?
Back then, he had noticed that Asmodeus seemed to be experimenting with something. The monsters inhabiting that place were incredibly powerful, and the environment itself was saturated with strangely strong fire energy.
This Ruin felt similar.
Clyde glanced toward the others. If his suspicion was correct, the monsters they had encountered so far might only have been the weakest creatures in this place.
He wanted to warn the others. But how? He could not explain what he knew without raising questions. As far as everyone else was concerned, this was his first time entering this Ruin.
If he suddenly revealed knowledge about Asmodeus, the artifacts, or how strong the creatures inhabiting the area were, Samuel would immediately start wondering how Clyde knew so much.
Clyde decided to remain silent. Let them discover the danger themselves.
They continued forward.
Then something moved inside the smoke.
Clyde saw several figures emerging from between the burning buildings.
At first, they looked like ordinary humanoids. Then the group saw what they had become.
Their bodies were covered in charred flesh. Cracks ran across their skin, glowing with orange light from the flames burning inside them. Their limbs had become twisted and unnaturally thick, fire constantly leaked from their mouths and empty eye sockets.
They looked like undead corpses that had absorbed an enormous amount of fire magic.
The creatures let out distorted screams before charging.
"Get ready!" Samuel shouted.
The group immediately spread into formation.
Don moved to the front, raising his shield as one of the burning undead crashed into him. The impact sent sparks flying across the street, but Don held his ground and immediately drove his shortsword into the creature’s chest.
Maira moved around his flank. Both of her curved blades flashed through the smoke as she struck another creature from opposite directions.
Her movements were quick and precise, she slashed and stabbed into the burning flesh before the undead could retaliate.
Behind them, Arven raised his staff, a moment later several spells appeared around him, enhancing the others while disrupting the monsters. His role was not to attack. He watched the battlefield carefully and then provided support whenever one of his companions was in danger or in need.
Leyan positioned himself a little back from the group. The elf drew his bow and released arrow after arrow in quick succession. Each projectile pierced through the smoke and struck the undead in their heads, throats, joints, slowing them down before the others finished them.
Clyde stepped forward with his longsword in hand. A creature lunged at him. He twisted his body aside and let its burning claws pass within inches of his chest. His sword immediately swept across its torso.
The blade cut through the charred flesh, lightning erupted from Clyde’s body, white-blue electricity surged along the sword and exploded through the undead from the inside. The creature convulsed before collapsing into a pile of burning ash.
Another monster rushed toward him. Clyde raised one hand and let lightning descended through the smoke and struck the creature directly.
Its body exploded into flames and ash again.
The battle quickly became a slaughter. The burning undead were resilient, far more durable than the ordinary monsters they had encountered earlier. Their bodies continued moving even after suffering wounds that should have killed them.
But against a coordinated group of experienced fighters, their resilience was not enough.
Don blocked them, Maira tore through them, Leyan picked them apart from a distance, Arven supported the entire formation, Samuel led the vanguard, and Clyde destroyed anything that managed to survive the others.
Within several minutes, the first wave of monsters were completely eliminated. Now only the crackling of the surrounding flames remained.
Samuel looked ahead and said, "Let’s keep moving."
The group continued deeper into the ruined city.
Clyde followed while keeping his senses alert. The faint presence of Asmodeus remained somewhere ahead, buried beneath the overwhelming heat and magical energy.
Eventually, they reached a wider section of the street. Everyone stopped at that moment. A massive crater was opened in the middle of the highway.
Fire burned deep inside it and above it, filling the entire depression with roaring flames. Waves of heat air rose from the crater and rolled across the surrounding streets, forcing everyone to shield their faces.
Even from a distance, Clyde could feel the intense magical energy radiating from below.
The flames moved strangely, almost as if something beneath them was breathing.
Clyde stared into the burning crater, feeling the faint presence of Asmodeus was coming from somewhere beyond it.
That was where the artifact was located, he was sure of it. But he didn’t want to say anything, less it would make them suspicious.
But he was sure that Samuel wouldn’t need a long time to figure it out.
"The artifact must be located down there," Samuel said, looking at the raging flames with solemn expression.
