Eternal Life Begins with Learning
Chapter 328 - 301: Cause and War (Part 2)Chapter 328: Chapter 301: Cause and War (Part 2)
In a situation like this, there would be no duels between kings, no one-on-one battles between generals.
He let out a long breath and gazed at the street before him.
It was just as he had expected.
According to the Decree issued by the Righteous Alliance long ago, with a great enemy at their doorstep, a mandatory conscription had begun.
All Cultivators in the city were now under unified command, organized into squads, and assigned their respective duties.
Everything was methodical, tense yet orderly.
He walked along the street to the North City Gate, where several Artifact Refiners from the Artifact Hall came to welcome him.
He paused at the foot of the city wall and looked up. A constant roar echoed from the top. One Spiritual Energy Cannon after another unleashed its firepower into the sky, their booming reports making the wall itself seem to vibrate.
"Senior, please."
One of the Artifact Refiners from the Artifact Hall spoke up.
"What’s the situation outside the city?"
Chu Mu asked casually as he stepped forward.
"The Longevity Sect’s army is at our gates. We’ve lost contact with the forward scout camps. The entire city of Jingmen is surrounded."
Chu Mu nodded, taking it all in.
Stepping onto the ramparts gave him a commanding view, like standing atop a mountain peak.
The scene outside the city unfolded before his eyes.
It was a brilliant sight—a dazzling, blinding brilliance.
Countless crisscrossing beams of light filled his vision, all of them converging into terrifying Spiritual Power Attacks that rained down upon the City Defense Array.
Array Prohibition Inscriptions swirled around the barrier. Under the endless barrage, ripples spread across its surface, only to vanish an instant later as it returned to normal.
It took him a moment to see past the brilliant glare and make out the scene outside the city.
Outside the city was... an overwhelming army, as majestic and immovable as a mountain range.
One after another, formations resembling a true army’s stretched from the foot of the wall all the way to the horizon.
Cultivators stood in formation, their hands forming seals as they worked together to cast one terrifying spell of Magic after another.
There were Puppet Arrays, clearly empowered by coordinated Array Prohibitions. Pillars of light shot skyward from them, unleashing a chaotic bombardment.
Spiritual Energy Cannons were arranged in batteries. Under the control of Cultivators, they roared to life, unleashing a relentless torrent of energy.
There was also a motley assortment of Puppets, ghoulish Corpse Refinements with green faces and sharp fangs, Resentful Souls, and even countless Demon Beasts of every kind.
Like ants swarming a fortress, they had already closed in on the base of the wall, using every means at their disposal to pound the city’s Grand Array.
Up in the sky, besides the three colossal Longevity Flying Boats that blotted out the sun, there were countless other Flying Boats of all shapes and sizes. They too filled the heavens, bombarding the city with all kinds of attacks.
Without a doubt, every single attack was aimed at the City Defense Array—or, more accurately, at the City Defense Array that was inextricably linked to the life of a Nascent Soul Cultivator.
From within the city, the counterattack was just as ferocious. Sheltered by the Grand Array, Cultivators on the walls also formed arrays, working together to pour down attacks on the enemy below.
Rows of densely packed Spiritual Energy Cannons mounted on the walls fired back at the forces outside.
More and more Cultivators were being organized and positioned at various points along the wall, unleashing a torrent of different abilities on the attackers below.
Talismans, Magical Artifacts, Magic...
All these things and more interwove in a dazzling spectacle across the sky, like a magnificent painted scroll.
Except this painted scroll, for all its beauty, was lethally terrifying.
On the city walls, protected by the Grand Array, the Cultivators could unleash all manner of Attacks without any concern for their own safety.
Outside the city, however, even though the attackers had their own Defenses, launching a full-frontal assault while the City Defense Array remained active put them at a severe disadvantage—they were essentially taking a beating.
Every Attack that rained down from the city walls had one of two results: the destruction of Puppet Artifacts, Corpse Refinements, and Resentful Souls, or the annihilation of one, or even multiple, Cultivators.
This was especially true for the Spiritual Energy Cannons. In times of peace, their value was more as a deterrent, but in a situation like this, a single blast could devastate a huge area.
Outside the city, the Longevity Sect’s relentless assault, launched at any cost to secure a strategic advantage, had already doomed countless Cultivators to their deaths.
Chu Mu stared at the brutal scenes unfolding before him.
This was the first and only time since he had stepped into the Cultivation Immortal Realm that he had personally witnessed and experienced a true war of this scale.
This was merely the tip of the iceberg, yet it gave him an inexplicable, almost illusory, sense of his own insignificance.
It felt as though an individual’s power was as insignificant as an ant’s in the face of it all.
But Chu Mu quickly suppressed that illusion.
’Clearly, this is just how a Low Tier Cultivator like me feels when faced with such a colossal war.’
’The true center of this war still lies with that small handful of people high above.’
Chu Mu looked up at the sky. Beyond the three massive Longevity Flying Boats, he thought he could make out several figures hovering in the air, gazing down upon Jingmen.
The figures were faint and indistinct, high above it all. Amidst the dazzling chaos, they seemed utterly surreal, yet they were clearly there.
It was only a single glance. Despite the vast distance, the barrier of the Grand Array, and the chaotic spectacle filling the sky, an inexplicable and overwhelming sense of Palpitations suddenly washed over Chu Mu.
The feeling was more intense, more terrifying than anything he had ever experienced.
’It felt as if irresistible danger would befall me if I kept looking.’
His heart hammered in his chest, and his face paled slightly.
He discreetly hid his slightly trembling hand in his sleeve before turning to the Artifact Refiners from the Artifact Hall beside him, trying to distract himself.
After a brief conversation, he managed to calm down somewhat and gained a general understanding of the defensive layout on the city walls.
