Eternal Life: I Can Sell Everything
Chapter 198 - 195: Debating with the UncannySong Ciwan asked Mr. Gao if saving living beings was part of the Chapter on benevolence.
Her underlying meaning was that she was defining Mr. Gao’s class as a lesson in benevolence.
Mr. Gao’s eyes widened. The tentacles in his left eye socket pulsed, extending and retracting, while his right eyeball spun round and round. He seemed unwilling to be led by the nose by Song Ciwan, yet for a moment, he couldn’t think of a suitable rebuttal.
Or perhaps, it wasn’t that he couldn’t refute her, but that he couldn’t bear to part with the "gift" Song Ciwan had just mentioned.
Mr. Gao always had a little more tolerance for a student who could consistently provide him with money.
The feelers on his feet slapped against the wet mud. He reined in his earlier delight, let out a grunt, and stared at Song Ciwan. "What? Xin Mian, don’t tell me... you want me to personally save this donkey?"
An invisible pressure descended once more. No matter how reasonable an aberration seemed, it was still an aberration. And no matter how greedy Mr. Gao was, a terrifying feeling always lingered when one was around him.
Song Ciwan ignored the grotesque sight of his writhing tentacles and said in a gentle voice, "Mr. Gao, a gentleman embraces benevolence and righteousness, fearing not even the collapse of heaven and earth."
Her words were light yet powerful. She continued, "To live for the benefit of all beings, to act with grace toward all things—this is the Dao of living as long as the heavens. You teach us to follow the will of the Saints, Mr. Gao. As your foolish student, I naturally hope that you will practice what you preach and instruct us further through your actions."
"Mr. Gao, once this student has learned true benevolence and righteousness, preparing your gift will surely become much easier."
Mr. Gao was speechless.
His right eyeball fell out again. This time, however, the tentacles in his left eye socket were exceptionally nimble. He didn’t have to scramble to catch it; a tentacle shot out and deftly caught the right eyeball.
The tentacles crowded together, pushing the right eyeball back into its socket. Mr. Gao forced a dignified tone. "The benevolent are invincible. Naturally, I practice this principle and uphold it at all times."
"However..." Mr. Gao paused, then snorted. "This donkey clearly doesn’t have long to live. It’s too difficult to save him. Saving him would be fighting fate itself. Is that something a benevolent person should do?"
Song Ciwan replied, "Mr. Gao, the heavens do not speak, so how can one go against them? As long as he can be saved, it is in accordance with heaven’s will!"
Mr. Gao was speechless... again.
He seemed to be at a loss for words once more.
So he opened his mouth, and tentacles from deep within his throat shot out, hastily straightening his somewhat twisted tongue.
Mr. Gao...
His tongue was straight, but he still seemed unable to speak for a moment.
...
Song Ciwan and Mr. Gao went back and forth, debating the concept of "a benevolent person."
She eventually discovered that although Mr. Gao constantly spoke of saints and sages, appearing quite learned, his vast knowledge was in fact watered down.
To put it bluntly, his performance as a teacher seemed less competent than that of his student, Song Ciwan.
’This is interesting...’
In the end, Song Ciwan convinced Mr. Gao to actually step in and save Jiao Zuo.
Jiao Zuo was covered in injuries. Most notably, his body was arched backward, completely taking the form of a donkey. This transformation was fatal. To be honest, in her current state, Song Ciwan couldn’t have saved him.
But when Mr. Gao took action, it was a different story.
He simply beckoned to the sky, and the birds that hadn’t yet flown far away suddenly fell into formation and landed on Jiao Zuo.
Then, the birds opened their beaks and, one after another, spat out mouthfuls of blood-streaked saliva.
This bloody saliva was miraculous. As it landed on Jiao Zuo, it was like a welcome rain falling on parched earth. In an instant, Jiao Zuo’s withered body was revitalized.
He had been lying on the ground, his eyes vacant and nearly lifeless.
He hadn’t reacted when Song Ciwan rescued him from the villagers’ siege, nor had he reacted during her debate with Mr. Gao.
It wasn’t until the birds’ bloody saliva fell upon him that his knotted meridians and arched back began to relax. At that moment, he finally lifted his eyes and looked at Song Ciwan.
A flicker appeared in his gaze, like a ripple finally disturbing the surface of a dead-still lake.
Mr. Gao, however, wore a pained expression. "What a loss, what a loss! These precious flying ants of mine are not easy to raise. I finally saved up some Guiyuan Dew, and it’s all been wasted on this donkey. Ah, my student Xin Mian, is the price of benevolence really so high?"
He called the birds "flying ants." Such inversions were no longer surprising.
Song Ciwan simply took out three more copper coins. She laid them on the ground and said with a slight smile, "Mr. Gao, ’to give is to receive.’ One must part with something to gain something. What do you think, Mr. Gao?"
What else could Mr. Gao think?
He thought it was an excellent idea!
His expression changed in an instant. Once again, he personally squatted down, scooped his hand toward the ground, and the three copper coins flew into his palm.
With the copper coins in hand, Mr. Gao immediately began to laugh heartily again.
He straightened his back, seeming to stand even taller than before. He watched as Jiao Zuo went from the brink of death to his breathing stabilizing. A moment later, Jiao Zuo suddenly hunched over and fumblingly climbed up from the ground!
Mr. Gao clapped his hands and laughed mockingly at Jiao Zuo. "Interesting, truly interesting! The donkey is trying to act like a human and stand up!"
The birds on Jiao Zuo’s body all flapped their wings and took flight, forming ranks in the air in moments.
With another wave from Mr. Gao, the birds soon vanished from sight.
Jiao Zuo stood there, his face pale with embarrassment, only his eyes moving slightly.
Mr. Gao continued to jeer, "This is absolutely hilarious! My dear students, what do you make of it? This donkey insists on acting like a human."
The other students didn’t answer. Song Ciwan said, "Mr. Gao, one should teach all without discrimination. Humans are the most spiritual of all creatures. What’s one more student to you?"
She consistently avoided actually calling Jiao Zuo a "donkey," deliberately sidestepping the term.
At that moment, the Heaven and Earth Scale appeared, having collected a mass of energy: [Human Desires. The bitter hatred, confusion, and gratitude of a special Innate Second Transformation Hundred Acupoints Realm Martial Artist. Four catties and nine taels. Available for trade.]
This was Jiao Zuo’s energy!
The Heaven and Earth Scale’s assessment of him was different from others. He had the prefix "special... Hundred Acupoints Realm Martial Artist."
Note, this was the Innate Second Transformation Hundred Acupoints Realm, not the simpler Innate Second Transformation Enlightenment Realm!
Jiao Zuo was truly worthy of his reputation as the renowned Demon-slaying General of Pinglan City. If his energy were sold, it would surely yield an extraordinary surprise.
Unfortunately, now was not a good time to make the trade.
Mr. Gao just laughed again. "Take a donkey as a student? Xin Mian, will you pay its gift?"
Song Ciwan replied calmly, "Mr. Gao, a student can only pay their own gift, not the gift of another."
