Eternal Life: I Can Sell Everything
Chapter 202 - 199: The Black Coffin StrikesSha Si’s arrival was like a sudden gale, instantly ruffling everyone’s already uneasy minds.
Song Ciwan shifted her feet slightly, casually moving to stand at an angle in front of Jiao Zuo, perfectly blocking his view from Sha Si’s direction.
But unexpectedly, Sha Si merely swept a casual glance in their direction, snorted at the group, and then swaggered past with his chin held high.
It was as if he hadn’t noticed Jiao Zuo’s presence at all, nor discovered that this was the very "donkey" he had once kept!
Just like that, Sha Si was soon far in the distance.
Over here, the students had just breathed a sigh of relief when Sha Si suddenly spun around. "Huh?" he exclaimed, then turned and began striding back toward them.
Beside Song Ciwan, Jiao Zuo’s back instantly went rigid.
Sha Si drew closer and closer, asking as he walked, "What’s all this? Your teacher... why is he being carried on someone’s back?"
Song Ciwan immediately stepped forward again at an angle, positioning herself to the side of Jiao Zuo. "To answer your question, Elder," she said, "our Mr. Gao has overworked himself and fallen asleep. We students are just about to take him home."
Sha Si had the appearance of a youth, but according to the rules of this Inverted Deceit Realm, calling him "Elder" was unlikely to be a mistake.
Sure enough, Sha Si’s expression softened slightly, and the hint of a smile even appeared on his face.
He paced around to face Jiao Zuo, his eyes fixed on the sleeping Mr. Gao as he looked him up and down. "Tsk," he clicked his tongue. "Just as I was saying. Mr. Gao is getting on in years; he really should get some proper rest."
As he spoke, his eyes narrowed slightly and his smile widened. "Alright, you all should hurry back now. Whatever you do, don’t wake Mr. Gao. He’s always working himself to the bone; it’s rare for him to sleep so soundly."
Song Ciwan replied, "Yes. You can rest assured, Elder."
Sha Si waved a dismissive hand, beaming as he motioned for them to be on their way.
The group, of course, did not linger. They hastily gathered around Jiao Zuo and departed.
After so many twists and turns, the group had circled around more than half the small village before finally spotting the Gao Family’s home at the foot of a mountain.
The Gao Family’s home was quite grand for such a small village. There, nestled at the foot of the rolling green mountains, stood a neat row of five large houses with blue-brick walls and tiled roofs.
A three-foot-high, blue-brick wall enclosed the five houses, forming a spacious courtyard. Lying at the gate was an enormous tabby cat.
That’s right—it was Mr. Gao’s cat!
Except, though it had the form of a cat, it barked like a dog, and Mr. Gao even called it "Doggy."
This tabby cat had previously always been at Mr. Gao’s side; who knows when it had returned home.
It had previously bitten off the ear of a white-haired student, an Innate First Transformation Martial Artist named Dong Siliang.
Now, upon seeing the tabby cat, Dong Siliang’s legs began to tremble.
As the group drew nearer, the tabby cat shot up from its resting position. It leaped forward, rushing toward Mr. Gao while letting out a series of imposing barks. "WOOF! WOOF!"
"WOOF! WOOF! Meeeow..." the tabby cat cried out, looking as if it was about to swat Jiao Zuo across the face.
Jiao Zuo instantly executed a nimble dodge!
He was a Hundred Acupoints Realm Martial Artist. Although his Power was currently sealed and his physical condition had deteriorated, his understanding of Martial Techniques was still far beyond that of an ordinary person.
The sidestep was so ingenious that the tabby cat’s paw swiped at empty air.
It immediately twisted its body in mid-air, as lithe and fluid as a ribbon of water. In a flash, it spun around and raised its paw to strike at Jiao Zuo’s face once more.
"Meeeow... WOOF!"
At the same time, it let out a furious cry.
Everything happened in a flash. In that instant, Song Ciwan shouted, "Doggy, stop! Mr. Gao just managed to fall asleep. Are you trying to wake him?"
"Whimper... WOOF!" The tabby cat’s face contorted, as if it finally understood that Mr. Gao hadn’t been harmed and was, in fact, merely asleep.
THUMP! The tabby cat landed lightly on all fours. Then, it began to circle Jiao Zuo, its face tilted upward.
Its fluffy body occasionally brushed against Jiao Zuo’s legs. In that moment, it seemed like the most adorable little pet. Its docile attitude and the speed with which its demeanor changed were a perfect match for its master, Mr. Gao.
The students all let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Song Ciwan’s tension also eased. She quickly added, "Doggy, we’re taking Mr. Gao home. Please move so we can put him in his bed."
The tabby cat understood Song Ciwan. It let out another soft "woof," then turned, and with a wag of its tail, leaped back to the courtyard gate.
It stood up on its hind legs, raising its forepaws like a person. Mimicking human actions, it struggled to undo the gate’s latch. Then it leaped through the entrance and began to lead the way.
As it led the way, it kept looking back at Jiao Zuo, who was carrying Mr. Gao, and whimpered as if to hurry him along.
Jiao Zuo hurried to follow it through the gate, with the other students filing in right behind him.
Once everyone was inside, the gate behind them swung shut on its own with a sudden SLAM! There was no wind.
The sudden noise startled everyone again. An invisible, indescribable unease crept into their hearts.
Xie Yunxiang couldn’t help but call out in a low voice, "Brother Xin!"
Then he called out again, "Cousin, should we..."
Xie Yunchong’s expression was grave. He just shook his head slightly without a word.
Song Ciwan didn’t speak either, only waving a hand at Xie Yunxiang to silence him.
The tabby cat led them into the central hall of the five blue-brick, tile-roofed houses.
The group followed close behind, only to be greeted by the sight of an enormous shrine!
It was a massive shrine, taking up the entire far wall of the hall. Below it were several tiers of densely packed spirit tablets!
Crimson candles burned on either side of the spirit tablets, bathing the entire hall in a light that made it feel as though it were submerged in a sea of fire.
Jiao Zuo, at the very front, bore the brunt of it. He felt a terrifying, searing heat wash over him, and he couldn’t stop himself from crying out in a low voice.
A moment later, the searing sensation faded, as if the pain had been nothing but an illusion.
Jiao Zuo let out a long sigh of relief, cold sweat beading on his back.
The others had all felt it too.
The tabby cat, however, seemed completely oblivious. It padded lightly through the hall and leaped into a room on the eastern side.
This was the eastern master bedroom—Mr. Gao’s quarters.
Jiao Zuo hurried to keep up, and the others followed him inside.
The group of eleven instantly made the once-spacious eastern room feel cramped and constricting.
But the furnishings in the master bedroom shocked them all over again. There, placed squarely against the far wall, was a pitch-black coffin.
A solitary black coffin in a stark, white-walled room—the scene was indescribably bizarre and unsettling.
Even though they were all Cultivators, an unspeakable terror crept into their hearts.
"WOOF!" The tabby cat leaped back and forth beside the black coffin, signaling for Jiao Zuo to place Mr. Gao inside it.
