Eternal Life: I Can Sell Everything

Chapter 214 - 211: All Lofty Aspirations, Turned to Farce

Song Ciwan looked up at the sky. The clouds shifted and changed, revealing a vision of the Gao Family’s prosperity.

Some came with wild game and mountain goods to seek treatment from Gao Erlang. He gladly received them and carefully prescribed remedies.

Some came with pastries and jugs of crude wine, asking Gao Dalang to teach them. Gao Dalang also accepted them with pleasure, promising to open a school in the village to educate the children.

Others brought their daughters to see Miss Gao Er. She possessed superb embroidery skills, and the village girls would benefit immensely from learning even a little from her.

And Miss Gao Er never refused. As long as they were eager to learn, she would teach them earnestly.

In the blink of an eye, the day arrived for Miss Gao Da’s three-day bridal homecoming visit.

Early that morning, the Gao Family’s home was bustling with activity. Villagers gathered there from the crack of dawn. Some busybodies were already waiting on the road for Miss Gao Da’s return, shouting, "Today, we common folk get to have our eyes opened again! Let’s see what fine gifts the in-laws send back with an Immortal-like figure such as Miss Gao Da!"

The crowd roared with laughter. "No matter how fine the gifts are, they aren’t for you! What’s the use in looking?"

The man replied, "If I see them, my dreams tonight will be sweet..."

This provoked even more laughter, and the air filled with cheer.

Soon, the appointed hour arrived.

But there was still no movement from the Liu Family’s side.

The laughter of the crowd began to thin. People started to wonder, "Why isn’t Miss Gao Da here yet?"

"Hah, she’s not Miss Gao Da anymore. You should call her Liu Erlang’s wife now."

"Oh, right. Why isn’t Liu Erlang’s wife here yet?"

"Liu Erlang isn’t here either..."

Whispers spread through the crowd as discussions began.

A while longer passed, and the sun was high in the sky, yet there was still no sign of movement from the Liu household.

It wasn’t just the newlywed couple who were supposed to be visiting; not a single other person from the Liu Family had emerged.

The Liu Family’s courtyard gate was shut tight. The yard itself was silent—even the crowing rooster seemed to be fast asleep, not yet awake.

A sense of unease began to spread subtly.

The members of the Gao Family grew anxious. They no longer had the heart to entertain the villagers. Gao Dalang led his younger siblings out onto the road that one had to take to get from the Liu’s home to the Gao’s.

"Where are they?"

"Why aren’t they here? Don’t tell me they’re not coming?"

The villagers murmured, "This isn’t right. Could something have happened to Miss Gao Da?"

Hearing this, Mr. Gao snapped angrily, "What are you talking about?"

Before the words had even faded, a group of figures suddenly appeared down the road.

Leading the way was the Liu family’s eldest son, Liu Dalang. Beside him was his mother, Mrs. Sha. She was also Liu Erlang’s mother, and therefore, Miss Gao Da’s mother-in-law.

Following them were several other Liu Family members, who hurried toward the Gao’s home carrying two stretchers covered with burlap sacks, one behind the other.

As they walked, Mrs. Sha shrieked from a distance, "Gao Erlang, hurry and save my Erlang!"

So, one of the stretchers was actually carrying Liu Erlang!

The Gao Family was stunned. They quickly pushed past the villagers and rushed toward the approaching group.

Gao Erlang was saying, "Mother-in-law, is my brother-in-law here? What’s happened to him?"

As he spoke, Gao Erlang reached out to lift the cloth covering the first stretcher.

But unexpectedly, Liu Dalang reached out and blocked him.

Gao Erlang asked in confusion, "Brother Liu, what are you doing?"

’No matter how skilled a physician he was, he couldn’t diagnose a patient through a piece of cloth.’

Liu Dalang’s attempt to stop him was strange, but Gao Erlang didn’t have time to dwell on it. Mrs. Sha spoke up, "Dalang, move aside. Let your brother-in-law Gao treat him."

Gao Erlang was thus able to smoothly pull back the burlap cloth on the stretcher.

As the cloth was lifted, a series of horrified gasps swept through the crowd.

Beneath the burlap, a tattered, ruined face was revealed.

The face was covered in bite and scratch marks, and what’s more, both of his ears were gone!

Where the ears should have been were bloody, jagged wounds.

It looked as if they had been bitten off!

Gao Erlang blurted out, "Who? Who would bite my brother-in-law into this state?"

With that, he reached a hand under Liu Erlang’s nose and cried out in alarm, "He’s not breathing! Mother-in-law, why didn’t you bring him sooner? He’s... he’s already stopped breathing! How can I save him?"

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Sha, whose expression had been strange all along, could no longer contain herself. She shrieked, "What? You’re saying there’s no hope?"

Gao Erlang said, "The man is dead. How can he be saved?"

As he spoke, his heart ached with sorrow for Liu Erlang and his sister, and he couldn’t help but add a word of blame. "Why didn’t you bring him sooner? It’s so late..."

"AHH! QUACK DOCTOR!" Mrs. Sha’s scream cut Gao Erlang off. She seemed to transform into a feral beast, lunging forward violently.

She raised her hands, claws out, and lunged to scratch at Gao Erlang while screeching furiously, "You deserve to be sliced a thousand times! Why did we have to marry into your family of ill-omened stars! Quack! Vile wretch! Give me back my Erlang’s life!"

Gao Erlang was so stunned by the verbal assault that he forgot to dodge, and Mrs. Sha’s sharp nails raked across his face.

In an instant, chaos erupted.

Gao Erlang clutched his face and tried to flee as Mrs. Sha pursued him, striking out. The villagers looked on, murmuring, while some tried to intervene. "What’s going on? Why have they started fighting?"

Meanwhile, the other Gao siblings pushed forward. Mr. Gao, using his short stature and small frame to his advantage, suddenly darted to the second stretcher. He yelled, "Who’s lying here? Why aren’t you letting my second brother save them?"

As he spoke, his hands moved like lightning, and with a SWISH, he tore the burlap off the rear stretcher.

At this reveal, the scene fell silent once more.

Beneath the cloth lay a face even more horrifying than Liu Erlang’s.

Countless bloody gashes crisscrossed the face, and just like the other, this face also had no ears.

But it wasn’t just the ears. A large hole had been torn in the center of her throat, as if by teeth. Her eyes were wide open and empty, her lusterless black pupils staring at the sky, as if trying to speak some unfinished words.

This... This was clearly the face of Miss Gao Da!

Even though she was disfigured, Mr. Gao recognized her in an instant!

After a long moment of silence, Mr. Gao finally found his voice. He opened his mouth and cried out hoarsely, "Big Sister!"

That cry was like flipping a switch. Blood rushed to Mr. Gao’s head. Like a fearsome, sharp arrow, he suddenly changed direction and charged toward Liu Erlang on the front stretcher.

"It was you! Did you kill my big sister?"

"Give me back my big sister’s life!"

Mr. Gao roared. Just as he was about to reach Liu Erlang’s stretcher, Mrs. Sha, who was still chasing and hitting Gao Erlang, suddenly spat and said, "How dare you? You raised such an unchaste and impure daughter, and you still have the gall to demand my son’s life in return?"

"If you ask me, your whole family should pay with their lives!"

Mrs. Sha’s words struck like a bolt of lightning from a clear sky, nearly shattering the consciousness of everyone present.

Mr. Gao was still bewildered. He replied, "What?"
