Eternal Life: I Can Sell Everything
Chapter 338 - 330: Is Human Nature Good or Evil?Inside the cave, Song Ciwan received an exceptionally dense mass of human desires.
This mass of human desires came from Yao Ermei, but Song Ciwan paid her no mind. She simply walked straight to Zhang Jiuniang’s skeletal remains and stood silently for a moment.
Aside from Zhang Jiuniang’s, Song Ciwan had already incinerated all the other skeletal remains in the cave, leaving only ashes.
It was now difficult to distinguish right from wrong, kindness from enmity. In the end, everything was but withered bones turned to ash, scattered by the wind.
The Mortal World is far too fickle. Love and hate, greed and resentment—these passions never cease. No wonder that from time immemorial, Immortals, Buddhas, gods, and saints have all spoken of seeking transcendence.
Song Ciwan, however, did not seek transcendence. She sought the ability to always be herself, with composure, within the mortal world. To achieve this, she needed to become strong—stronger, and stronger still, endlessly striving for the absolute pinnacle of strength.
This was her original aspiration, and also her Dao Heart.
She needed to constantly remind herself of this, again and again. Only then could she continue forging ahead on the unpredictable path of the Dao, holding fast to her original aspiration, lest she stray from her course and arrive at some unknowable, perplexing destination.
Song Ciwan stood before Zhang Jiumei’s skeletal remains, her hands clasped behind her back.
Her silhouette was slender and straight. She seemed to be right there, yet for some reason, she emanated a majestic, boundless aura, like that of a towering mountain.
The sight of her inspired both awe and trepidation.
Behind them, the anxious Yao Ermei had yet to receive a reply from Song Ciwan. After an intense internal struggle, she could no longer contain her panic. She dropped to her knees and crawled forward until she was just behind Song Ciwan.
She prostrated herself deeply and pleaded once more, "Fairy, I beg you, save me! Please, save me!"
Another mass of human desires flew out: [Human Desires: A mortal’s anxiety, confusion, and terror. Weight: three catties and six taels. Tradable.]
Song Ciwan pondered for a moment before saying, "Yao Ermei, I have a question for you."
Yao Ermei froze, overjoyed that Song Ciwan was finally acknowledging her. "Fairy, please ask," she said quickly.
Song Ciwan said, "Answer me this. Suppose a person, harboring malicious intent, reaches for an innocent infant. Although their wicked scheme does not succeed, the fact that this person has committed an evil act is indisputable.
The infant was not harmed, but it was not because the perpetrator had a crisis of conscience and repented at the critical moment. It was only because a passerby, unable to bear witness to such a wicked deed, intervened and saved the infant’s life.
So, even though this person’s actions did not result in tragedy—and in fact, she suffered the consequences of her own evil—is such a person truly worth saving?"
Yao Ermei listened to Song Ciwan’s question, nervous and attentive. At first, her only concern was that she would answer poorly and displease the Fairy.
But as Song Ciwan finished weaving her tale into a question, Yao Ermei felt as if a sudden thunderclap had erupted in the dark cave. It was like a bolt of lightning striking her from above with unstoppable force!
Song Ciwan’s tone was gentle, yet every word, every sentence, was like a knife, like a sword.
The question left Yao Ermei stunned, completely dumbfounded.
’So that’s how it was... That’s how it was...’
’It wasn’t that Brother Yun’s plan failed, nor that I was careless... It was... it was...’
For a moment, Yao Ermei’s mind went completely blank.
Everything seemed to blur before her eyes. Struck by this bolt from the blue, her thoughts became a tangled mess. She could barely think at all.
A chaotic surge of human desires rushed out, and the Heaven and Earth Scale collected another mass of energy: [Human Desires: A mortal’s confusion, fury, and pain. Weight: three catties and two taels. Tradable.]
Yao Ermei opened her mouth, wanting to scream but unable to make a sound, wanting to wail but unable to shed a tear.
Then, the figure standing with her hands clasped behind her back let out a soft sigh.
It was as if Yao Ermei had been struck by the distant resonance of a great bell. A sharp arrow of clarity suddenly pierced through the tangled mess of her thoughts, carving a path through the confusion.
"Fairy!" Yao Ermei cried, flinging herself to the ground in a mix of shame and desperation. "Since the plot didn’t succeed, it was only an attempted crime! At the Government Office... when the Government Office passes judgment, an attempted crime carries a lesser sentence! It can’t be treated the same as a completed one!
"Fairy, oh, Fairy, I was wrong! But I beg you, on account of all the hardship I’ve already endured, please save me! Originally, Brother Yun just said we were to steal the Little Girl because some noble person had taken a liking to her and wanted to raise her as their own.
If we succeeded, that noble person promised him three hundred taels of silver. I just... I just wanted the money so I could run away with Brother Yun and start a new life. My husband... he’s impotent, and because his life is so miserable, he always takes his anger out on me.
I couldn’t take it anymore! I really couldn’t! I just wanted to leave, that’s all I wanted! I never imagined that the ’noble person’ Brother Yun mentioned was actually such a terrifying... a terrifying..."
She couldn’t speak anymore. The mere thought of the Skeleton Cultivator’s terrifying nature was enough to make Yao Ermei’s soul shudder. An all-consuming fear threatened to drown her.
[Human Desires: A mortal’s fear, confusion, and lingering terror. Weight: two catties and one tael. Tradable.]
Song Ciwan remarked, "You’re surprisingly eloquent."
Yao Ermei remained prostrate on the ground. Amidst her lingering fear, a wave of regret finally, belatedly, washed over her.
In a daze, she mumbled, "Meeting such a terrifying Demon... even a grown woman like me nearly died... If the Fairy hadn’t appeared, I would be dead for sure. If it had been the Little Girl... she’s so small. How could she possibly have withstood that?"
"I was jealous of her, but I never wanted her to die..."
At this, Yao Ermei collapsed to the ground once more, weeping.
Through a blur of tears, she strained to look up at Song Ciwan.
She felt that while the Fairy’s silhouette was right before her, it also seemed as distant as if it were beyond the clouds.
The Fairy did not seem like a Human of the Mortal World. She was more like a beam of light in the dark cave, a light that only served to illuminate how utterly squalid and tainted Yao Ermei was in that moment.
