Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 186: Relay a Message for MeThe hospital room was a flurry of activity, with medical staff rushing in and out.
Outside the room, in the side corridor, a tall figure had been standing for a long time.
Pauline Shaw took advantage of the commotion to slip out. "She’s stable now," she whispered to him. "She’s asleep."
The tense expression on Caleb Lowell’s face eased slightly. "That’s good."
Seeing him turn to leave, Pauline couldn’t hold back. "Cousin, aren’t you going in to see her?"
She could tell he was worried sick about Luna Morgan, so why was he avoiding her?
’Now that Jane Lancaster has already called off the engagement, he’s single. Does he still have to hold back like before?’
Caleb’s steps faltered. The scene he’d witnessed upon arriving yesterday flashed before his eyes.
Luna Morgan had been lying under the car’s wheel, yet she had calmly told everyone not to move her and to just wait for the ambulance.
It wasn’t until he sensed something was wrong and tried to help her up that he discovered the terrifying sight.
A piece of metal was embedded deep in her arm, and blood had been flowing steadily into a storm drain. There was no telling how long it had been bleeding.
Her face was pale from the rapid blood loss, and she was so drowsy it looked like she could pass out at any second. Yet she still tried to explain, "Mr. Lowell, I’m fine. I’m sorry to trouble you again."
She was so fragile and pitiable, but her ingrained stubbornness and refusal to admit defeat made people mistakenly believe she was indestructible.
It was just like years ago, when she’d been stabbed in the arm by a kidnapper but had endured it without a single sound, leading the media to photograph her "unharmed" and fueling a misunderstanding that lasted for years.
Caleb closed his eyes, the image of spreading crimson still vivid in his mind.
A moment later, he opened them again, his gaze now calm. "No. As long as she’s safe, that’s all that matters."
He started to walk away, then stopped again. "Relay a message for me—I have never regretted ditching the Veridian meeting to save her, nor have I ever blamed her for it."
She had been blaming herself for that incident, running to the Lowell Family estate many times to humbly beg for an audience, only to be ruthlessly turned away by him.
Before she lost consciousness yesterday, she had grabbed his arm, apologizing and hoping he could forgive her.
But deep down, he had never truly blamed her, so what was there to forgive?
Once Pauline understood the meaning behind his words, her heart leaped with joy. "I understand, Cousin."
As she turned to go back, her steps were much lighter, buoyed by a clear sense of elation.
She was genuinely happy for her friend. This was as good as an admission from Caleb of his favoritism toward Luna Morgan.
Even though the Veridian project was ultimately lost, costing The Lowell Group tens of billions, and the board of directors had been holding Caleb accountable day after day, he still felt this way.
Yet he still didn’t regret it, nor did he blame Luna Morgan. Clearly, her place in his heart was more important than tens of billions.
From around the corner, Gordon Dawson slowly emerged, a playful, calculating look on his face.
He wasn’t surprised that Caleb Lowell liked Luna Morgan. After all, he himself had once been quite fond of her. Her aura was so gentle and harmless that it was hard for a man not to feel a protective instinct.
What did surprise him was that even after Luna caused Caleb to lose tens of billions, Caleb still didn’t think of her as bad luck.
Heh. ’Does he really think he’s some great romantic hero? He’s just a rich kid who’s never known what it’s like to be poor.’
’Still, I can definitely use this.’
That afternoon, when Jane Lancaster decided it was about time, she sent a selfie to the sibling group chat.
In the photo, she was wearing an evening gown with her makeup done, her features so beautiful they were stunning.
When Adrian Lancaster saw the message and opened it, his expression instantly turned cold. [What are you doing?]
’Luna Morgan is in bed, tossing and turning in pain, and here she is, all dolled up. Does she have any empathy at all?’
Jane: [I have a banquet to attend tonight.]
Adrian frowned. ’She’s still in the mood to go to a banquet?’
[What banquet is so important that you absolutely have to go tonight?] he asked, suppressing his anger. He himself had just canceled several business engagements.
Jane sighed and sent a voice message. "I really do have to go, Adrian. I just called our eldest brother, and he said he wants you to go with me."
Before Adrian could reply, his phone rang.
"Chase, come home right now and pick up Jay. Today is the first birthday party for the Hughes family’s grandson."
Julian Lancaster rubbed his temples. He’d been so busy lately that he’d almost forgotten about the Hughes’s grandson’s first birthday party.
He hadn’t expected Jane Lancaster to still be paying attention to this. ’Did she see the invitation on the living room coffee table?’
Adrian: "..."
’And here I thought it was some important banquet. It’s just for the Hughes family, and only a child’s first birthday at that.’
’Why is attending this so mandatory? Our families aren’t even that close. Just remembering to send a gift is more than enough of a courtesy.’
’He never liked going to the Hughes’s house before, and his eldest brother never forced him. So why, just because Jane wants to go, does he have to escort her? On what grounds?’
Adrian lowered his gaze, his voice deceptively obedient. "Okay, Brother. I’ll do my best."
After hanging up, he let out a small laugh. ’Do my best?’
’A top celebrity like me can always have some ’sudden work commitment’ come up.’
Jane Lancaster waited at home for nearly an hour. When she was scrolling through her phone and saw the news that Adrian Lancaster had suddenly appeared on a promotional livestream for his show, she knew she’d been stood up.
She sighed. ’Honestly, if he had something to do, why didn’t he just say so earlier? Why make me wait here all this time?’
"Let’s go ahead," Jane told the driver.
Not long after Jane left, Julian Lancaster also received a message that Adrian wouldn’t be able to make it.
He considered it for a moment, then instructed Lucy Finch, "You go in my place. And tell Jay not to go, either."
This banquet wasn’t mandatory to begin with. The gift arriving was enough to show their regards.
Lucy held her phone and quickly replied, "But Miss Lancaster has already left."
Julian’s brow furrowed. "In that case, you don’t need to go. Leave it. It’s fine," he said calmly.
He turned and walked into the conference room, hiding the hint of sarcasm in his eyes.
He could more or less guess what Jane was thinking. She probably wanted to integrate into Solara’s high-society circles.
His sister had always been one to act only when there was a benefit—always enthusiastic about socializing. That was how she earned the title of "Stratton’s number one socialite" at such a young age.
Coincidentally, the person who first praised her as Stratton’s top socialite happened to be an influential figure from the Hughes family in Solara.
The Hughes family of Stratton came from a long line of scholars and wasn’t involved in business, but because of their close ties to the Solara branch, no one dared to underestimate them.
When it came to cultivating these kinds of connections, his sister was far more skilled than he was.
Alvin Lancaster rushed to the hospital.
He had seen the messages in the group chat and knew his younger brother was supposed to be escorting their sister to a banquet, so he’d left work early to come take over.
In the hospital bed, Luna Morgan was still fast asleep.
Adrian Lancaster had been looking after her during the day. He said she had woken up briefly around noon before falling back into a deep sleep.
Alvin tucked her in, then noticed some movement on the balcony. He opened the door and walked out.
Adrian looked up, raising a finger to his lips in a shushing gesture.
Alvin froze for a second. ’Shouldn’t my brother be at the Hughes family banquet with our sister? Why is he still here?’
He closed the door and stepped back. A moment later, Adrian came out.
