Jeok Wigang grinned.
“That’s a relief. Could we hurry a little more, though? Dealing with the Emei nuns took far too long.”
“Of course.”
Trusting him now, Abbess Unjeong hurried toward the three sacred grounds.
Their first destination was the Pure Lotus Pond.
It was a pool where water infused with Mount Emei’s vital energy gathered.
Located within Samantabhadra Gorge, it was also known for the snow-white lotus blossoms that bloomed upon its surface.
Legend held that the pond had formed from the tears of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
The moment Abbess Unjeong saw it, her face filled with shock.
“What is it?”
“The lotuses...”
In the middle of the pond, the lotus blossoms had withered, their stems bent and broken.
“Why have the lotuses that never wither...?”
“It must be because Mount Emei’s yin energy has grown too strong.”
“Even the water has turned murky...”
Just as Jeok Wigang had claimed, something was wrong with the three sacred grounds.
A foul stench even rose from the water.
Jeok Wigang stepped into the Pure Lotus Pond.
“Wait, it’s dangerous—”
The cold emanating from the pond was more than an ordinary person could endure, and Abbess Unjeong tried to stop him.
But when she saw him wade in without the slightest difficulty, she fell silent and watched.
Jeok Wigang ignored the rising chill and surveyed the pond.
Then he plunged one hand beneath the surface and pulled something out.
RIIIIP—
What emerged was a pitch-black iron pillar.
The moment Jeok Wigang destroyed it—
HISSSS—
An enormous amount of energy burst outward in every direction.
It was no ordinary malignant energy.
Jeok Wigang recited a mantra and drew in every trace of the spreading poison qi.
The murky pond water cleared, and the foul odor faded away.
Jeok Wigang had not been lying.
Now Abbess Unjeong was the one growing frantic.
Surely the other sacred grounds were in the same condition.
“I-I’ll take you to the next one.”
*****
The Thousand Buddha Wall was carved with a thousand enormous images of the Buddha.
Practitioners would sit wherever they wished, spend time in repentance, and recite Buddhist sutras.
Yet the situation there was just as grave.
Each of the thousand Buddhas had eyes made of crystal, and every one of those eyes had turned black.
It looked as though all one thousand statues had closed their eyes.
That, too, was caused by the corrupted energy.
Abbess Unjeong was at a loss.
There were more than a thousand pairs of crystal eyes. How could anyone absorb all the corruption within them?
Jeok Wigang had said it clearly.
If they delayed any longer, Mount Emei’s vital energy would collapse beneath the overwhelming yin energy.
But there was simply too much corruption to remove.
“I am sorry... I should have acted sooner.”
Jeok Wigang smiled and shook his head at her apology.
“There’s no need to worry. We’re not too late.”
“Not too late? How can you possibly neutralize all the energy within those crystals? Let me help, if there is anything I can do. Tell me what is needed.”
“I appreciate the offer, but I can manage alone.”
Jeok Wigang began murmuring something, and Abbess Unjeong listened in silence.
The moment he finished, a powerful wind swept through the area.
Starting with the statues in the very first row, the Buddhas began opening their eyes one after another.
At the sight, Abbess Unjeong unconsciously uttered a prayer.
“Amitabha.”
“Now, let’s hurry to the last one.”
Their final destination was Samantabhadra Terrace at the summit of Mount Emei.
The first Abbess of the Emei Sect had named it in honor of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
At the edge of the terrace stood the Blue-White Lotus Lamp, a flame said never to go out.
Its light had grown exceedingly dim.
Yet Abbess Unjeong was no longer worried.
Jeok Wigang was with her.
After witnessing what he had done at the first two sacred grounds, her faith in him had become absolute.
They had called such a benefactor a lecherous fiend, attacked him, and treated him with contempt.
She could not excuse herself even with a hundred mouths.
“Hmm.”
Standing before the Blue-White Lotus Lamp, Jeok Wigang tilted his head as though something felt wrong.
Unlike before, he spent a long time examining it.
Sensing that something was amiss, Abbess Unjeong asked cautiously,
“Is there a problem?”
“No... Is this truly one of the three sacred grounds?”
“It is! Of the three, this is the place we hold most sacred.”
“Is that so? Hmm.”
“What troubles you?”
“I think that’s a trap.”
“A trap?”
“I examined it, and it seems that the moment I touch it, energy in a certain location will explode. Its flow is connected down there...”
Abbess Unjeong’s face changed when she looked in the direction he indicated.
“T-that place... is sealed.”
“Sealed?”
“It was once one of the Emei Sect’s three sacred grounds. But at some point, a sinister energy began rising from it. My former master, Abbess Myohwa, declared that corrupted energy had gathered there. She sealed it and proclaimed the Pure Lotus Pond, where righteous energy converged, as the new sacred ground.”
“It seems we’ll have to go there.”
“Hmm...”
“There’s no point trying to stop me. You know that, don’t you?”
Jeok Wigang grinned.
Abbess Unjeong gave a helpless smile.
“You are right. I was worrying for nothing. I will guide you there.”
******
Jeok Wigang arrived at the former sacred ground of the Emei Sect, a place known as the Silent Heart Cavern.
“The other places were merely decoys. This was the true target.”
He examined the surroundings with a grave expression.
This was where all of Mount Emei’s yin energy truly gathered.
This place, more than anywhere else, held the mountain’s true vital essence.
The moment Jeok Wigang leaned forward to inspect the pond—
SHAAK—
A black shape burst from the water and attacked him.
At that instant—
KWOOOOOO—
A tremendous force swept through the cavern, powerful enough to make Abbess Unjeong stagger.
She stared at Jeok Wigang as though unable to understand what had just happened.
“What was that?”
“Nothing important. He had hidden a reanimated corpse in the pond.”
“A reanimated corpse? The same kind I’m thinking of?”
“Yes.”
“H-how could such an unholy thing be here on Mount Emei?”
“Because the man who created it liked Mount Emei’s yin energy, I suppose. It seems he used the yin energy here to manufacture reanimated corpses.”
“W-what are you saying? Manufacturing reanimated corpses... within one of the Emei Sect’s sacred grounds...?”
One horrifying revelation after another continued pouring from Jeok Wigang’s mouth.
“You don’t believe me? Come look inside the pond.”
A sense of dread settled over Abbess Unjeong, but she cautiously approached and looked down.
“Gasp! W-what are all those?”
“Bodies.”
THUD—
Dozens of corpses lay submerged in the Silent Heart Cavern’s pond, each dressed in burial robes covered in unfamiliar patterns.
“T-they look like they’re moving!”
They were.
The bodies beneath the water were twitching.
Only then did Abbess Unjeong understand what the necromancer had meant by death.
It was the reanimated corpses inside this pond.
“It says they’re Yin-Blood Corpses.”
“Y-Yin-Blood Corpses!”
“You know of them?”
Abbess Unjeong nodded frantically.
“My master was killed by one of those damned creatures!”
“Then why does no one in the world know about it?”
“At the time, the Emei Sect had not yet recovered its former strength... and the culprit never appeared again afterward.”
“How did you know it was a Yin-Blood Corpse?”
“The truth is... I was hiding nearby. My master was being killed by that monster, and I... I covered my mouth and hid because I was afraid...”
Jeok Wigang nodded.
It was entirely understandable.
“At the time... the culprit muttered that the Yin-Blood Corpse still lacked yin energy. That it would require more time before it was complete. He said that once it was finished... an invincible reanimated corpse surpassing even a Living Corpse would be born...”
Abbess Unjeong stared into the pond, trembling with fear.
“T-that thing is a monster beyond imagination. My master was immensely powerful, yet she did not last even ten exchanges against it.”
She turned urgently to Jeok Wigang.
“W-we must inform the entire Central Plains at once! Then we must join forces with them and destroy those monsters!”
“I think it’s already too late to inform the Central Plains.”
“What do you mean?”
Abbess Unjeong turned with a sinking expression.
The corpses were walking out of the pond.
The cold emanating from them was beyond imagination.
The chill alone made her feel as though her entire body might freeze solid.
“Amitabha! Amitabha!”
The terror she had felt as a child surged back.
She repeated the Buddha’s name again and again, trying to calm herself, but her heart refused to settle.
Even so, she could not simply stand there.
If she hesitated now, both the Emei Sect and the entire martial world would be placed in danger.
Even if she could destroy only one of them, she had to try.
SHIIING—
Her hand trembled with fear, but she gritted her teeth, drew her sword, and poured her energy into it.
HUMMMMM—
A gentle warmth radiated from the energy flowing through the blade.
Jeok Wigang smiled.
He could tell that she was someone who had genuinely devoted herself to spiritual cultivation.
At that moment, one of the Yin-Blood Corpses sensed Abbess Unjeong’s energy and bared its teeth.
Its expression made its intense hatred unmistakable.
Then the other corpses sensed her energy as well.
All at once, they erupted with terrifying killing intent and fixed their gazes upon her.
Abbess Unjeong knew instinctively.
She would not leave this place alive today.
Steeling herself, she tightened her grip on her sword.
Then she suddenly remembered something.
Jeok Wigang.
She should have sent him to safety first.
The instant her resolve wavered, the corpses were already upon her.
There was no time to react.
“No.”
Is this how it ends?
At that moment—
KWA-KWA-KWAAANG—
A force powerful enough to shake the earth blasted past Abbess Unjeong and annihilated every corpse.
It had happened right before her eyes, yet she could not comprehend it.
What just happened?
Her body trembling, she slowly turned her head.
Jeok Wigang stood there smiling, one fist still extended.
“Were you trying to protect me? I’m touched, Abbess.”
“D-did you... destroy all those monsters just now?”
“I didn’t mean to startle you. The situation was rather urgent. My apologies.”
Apologies?
No.
She had been startled, but he had saved her life.
More importantly, he had obliterated those terrifying Yin-Blood Corpses with a single punch.
Even her master, powerful as she had been, had not endured ten exchanges against one.
Yet Jeok Wigang had erased dozens of them in one blow.
As Abbess Unjeong stared in shock, light descended over her head.
Looking upward, she saw a path torn through the sky’s dense black clouds along the course of Jeok Wigang’s fist strike.
It resembled a road cleared through a field buried beneath heavy snow.
The light streaming through the opening seemed to form the image of the Buddha.
Tears welled in Abbess Unjeong’s eyes, and she unconsciously uttered a prayer.
“Amitabha.”
Meanwhile, Jeok Wigang entered the Silent Heart Cavern and dismantled the formation core.
WHOOOOM—
The moment the core at the center of the formation was removed, a violent gale swept across the mountain.
The yin energy blanketing all of Mount Emei peeled away like a discarded husk.
Only then did Abbess Unjeong understand just how dire the mountain’s condition had become.
Had they left it alone, they truly would have lost Mount Emei—the home of the Emei Sect.
She approached Jeok Wigang and bowed with the deepest respect she could offer.
“Thank you. Truly! Thanks to you, both Mount Emei and the Emei Sect have been saved. On behalf of the entire Emei Sect, I offer you my heartfelt gratitude.”
What would have happened if those horrifying Yin-Blood Corpses had descended upon the Emei Sect?
Complete annihilation.
