Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress

Chapter 690: Backlash from the Supreme Laws

Ancient Devils could change the past using the imprints they had left on the timeline.

Theoretically, as long as an Ancient Devil had traced their timeline back far enough, leaving their imprint on the moment the Origin Sea was created and reaching the Absolute Beginning, they could take action and destroy everything.

That would effectively kill all the creatures that should have been born in the future.

Of course, no Ancient Devil had ever done so.

Not only because that would certainly attract beings of a similar level who would step forward to stop them, as well as the Princes and Princesses of the Demon World, but also because of another reason.

Changing the past did not come without a price. Every time an Ancient Devil changed something, they would directly suffer backlash.

Not from the Demon World, but from the entire Origin Sea and the Supreme Laws that governed it.

For such a large-scale alteration, there was no way a mere Ancient Devil could survive.

The situation Liora was currently facing was the same.

Although it was nowhere near as extreme as directly changing the history of the Origin Sea, it was a fact that she had used strength she would not normally possess.

One Across Eternity—by borrowing the power of one’s past, the user could exert tremendous strength. The more power they borrowed, the higher that strength would be.

Since this technique did not directly change the past, the backlash Liora had to suffer was not extreme.

Yet that did not mean it was not dangerous.

After all, it was a punishment coming directly from the Supreme Laws!

How could it possibly be something to scoff at?

Save for those with overwhelming strength and means, it was impossible for an ordinary person to withstand it!

Liora’s crimson eyes reflected the outline of the crackling lightning.

Countless colors surrounded its edges.

Blue. Green. Crimson.

Above all, black—the color of destruction.

Although the lightning had yet to descend into reality, Liora could sense its oppressive power.

Yet this was far from its only characteristic.

The lightning was not only powerful, but also extremely fast.

The moment after the lightning condensed, it appeared right above her and crashed down upon her.

Liora was given no time to react.

Even though she had expected the backlash, she had no time to evade, let alone erect any defenses.

She could only face the lightning’s destructive power with the defense of her physical body alone.

The result was as expected.

Although Liora had always paid attention to strengthening her physical body, its defenses were far from enough to withstand the lightning’s impact.

The moment the two met, her body broke apart into its smallest particles, before even those were extinguished by the remaining power.

In a matter of seconds, Liora had completely disappeared.

No traces remained of her, as though she had truly perished.

Thankfully, that was not the case.

Although Liora usually operated under her humanoid appearance, this state had long since ceased to be her true nature.

Her true body was not that of a human, nor that of a Devil.

Instead, it was the Cosmic Sea!

The body she usually wore was merely a physical vessel carrying it!

The moment that vessel broke apart, her true body was revealed in the outside world.

It was a nebula of cosmic dust that constantly revolved like a breathing universe.

Countless tiny stars were scattered within it, shining with extraordinary brilliance as though threatening to engulf the entire world.

The sight was magnificent, enough for even Ancient Devils to become immersed and lose themselves in it.

However, as was the case with all things, this beautiful scene was destined not to last for long.

A crackling sound suddenly erupted.

A portion of the nebula lit up before exploding, shattering into pieces.

The impact quickly spread to the rest of it.

More and more crackling sounds rang out as the nebula was slowly torn apart from within.

It tried to fight back.

It squirmed eerily, like a monster trying to defend itself.

Tentacles of cosmic dust extended from its core, reaching across its surface as though they were attempting to put out a fire.

Unfortunately, its resistance seemed futile.

Time slowly passed, with the nebula trembling violently throughout the process.

The light of many stars was extinguished, while its structure grew smaller as a result.

Yet just as it seemed that this would continue forever and it would be destroyed completely, the crackling noise stopped abruptly.

The squirming tentacles also halted.

The wounded nebula shook once more.

This time, not because it had been wounded, but because it took action.

Blood, flesh, and bones were woven together before the nebula entered the newly constructed body.

When the process was over, the recently born body opened its eyes.

Then, its mouth...

"Blurgh!"

Liora couldn’t help but spit out a mouthful of blood.

An agonizing pain coursed through both her body and her mind.

She felt as though she was on the verge of death, as if the slightest touch would cause her to shatter into countless pieces.

She raised her head with a wry smile.

The gap in space above her had long since disappeared. After performing the single strike of lightning, the Supreme Laws had retreated.

They seemed to be operating on the established rules, not caring whether Liora survived or not.

Still, their power was terrifying.

"It deserves to be the rules that govern the Origin Sea," she softly exhaled, sensing that she would need millions of years in order to recover.

Her very foundation had been damaged. As long as she did not fix this, she would be unable to make any progress.

Yet aside from the brief surprise she displayed at the power of the Supreme Laws, Liora showed no fear or panic.

Instead, a relieved smile appeared on her face.

She knew that her plan had succeeded.

Using One Across Eternity and provoking the Supreme Laws had been absolutely worth it!

The moment that thought arose, a silver sword appeared above her head.

Then, it struck down.
