Evolution of the Ruined Heir

Chapter 389: Father’s Daughter

"Hm. You’re telling the truth... for now."

Her eyes remained suspicious, as though silently warning him not to dare develop any feelings for Donna, but she didn’t say anything further.

"Come on, Renlo."

With a huff, she flicked her hair over her shoulder and walked out of the room.

Renlo remained rooted in place, looking to his friend for salvation, but all Malakai gave him was a helpless shrug.

"Renlo!"

He flinched and hurried out of the room, though not without throwing Malakai one last look of betrayal.

Now left alone, Malakai turned back towards the mirror, taking in the clothes he’d chosen for the night. The entire outfit gave off something of a bad-boy look, and after staring at himself for a moment, he sighed.

’What a pain.’

It was going to be a long night.

...

"I said no!"

"But father, I—"

Mamush slammed his fist against the table.

"How many times do I have to say it, Donna? No! You are not leaving this estate, and you are certainly not going outside with the ninth vein! It’s too dangerous, and I won’t allow it!"

"But I’ll be with the ninth vein! Who would even dare attack us when he’s there? Please, father... please?"

Donna had come prepared, even going as far as bringing out the waterworks in an attempt to sway him. Unfortunately for her, Mamush remained unmoved.

"No! You can cry an entire river if you want, the answer is still no. End of discussion. Now go to your room."

"Urgh! You think you’re protecting me, but you’re not! You’re just ruining my life! I hate you!"

Donna stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

Mamush stared after her with a dark expression, completely caught off guard by such an outburst from his sweet, innocent daughter.

’That damned ninth vein!’

Before Malakai came along, Donna had always spoken to him with care and respect.

Now look at her!

Mamush had originally planned to confuse and distract Malakai using his lovely daughter, but never in his wildest imagination had he expected the bastard to corrupt her this quickly!

’I knew that boy was trouble. I need to get him as far away from my beautiful Donna as possible!’

Still, despite her outburst, Mamush remained absolutely certain of his daughter’s loyalty. Donna had respected and looked up to him ever since she was young.

She practically revered him!

There was no way some boy could steal that away from him, even if said boy happened to be a vein.

’She’s probably in her room regretting everything she just said. Give it a few minutes and she’ll come running back to apologize.’

The thought immediately eased Mamush’s expression, and he smiled to himself with a satisfied nod.

...

With some effort, Donna scaled the estate wall and dropped down on the other side.

Her closest maid, who also served as one of her guards, landed beside her, staring at her young lady with an utterly exhausted expression.

"My lady, please! Let’s just go back before anyone notices! Lord Mamush specifically said—"

"Rena, shhh! Do you want them to catch us?"

"...At this point, I really do," Rena muttered with a defeated look, but Donna completely ignored her, glancing around instead.

Spotting the bustling streets some distance away, Donna smiled, relieved that they had finally made it out. She’d pretended to retire to her room before slipping away from her army of guards through the secret passage meant for emergencies.

To think her father had actually tried to stand in the way of this.

Donna wanted to strangle his fat neck!

"My lady..." Rena tried to plead once more, looking increasingly miserable.

If Lord Mamush found out about this, she would be lucky to keep her head!

"Shhh..."

Donna immediately started towards the streets, leaving the reluctant guard with no choice but to follow.

It wasn’t long before they reached the agreed meeting spot.

Donna’s eyes quickly found the tall, toned figure standing alone beneath a tree, and her face immediately brightened as she approached him.

"You made it." Malakai smiled.

"N-ninth vein."

"Malakai. I told you already, didn’t I?"

"M-Malakai."

A blush crept onto her cheeks as she shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

Malakai glanced at the lone guard accompanying her, taking note of the lack of any other presences nearby before his smile deepened slightly.

’Only one. Good.’

He could only hope Renlo and Octavia were doing their part and keeping Mamush distracted.

Still smiling, he asked, "Ready?"

"Y-yes!"

"Then let’s go."

Together, they made their way towards the bustling streets.

...

Staring out the window at the silent night for several seconds, Mamush slowly frowned.

He’d had this uneasy feeling in his gut for a while now, like something was wrong somewhere. The fact that Donna still hadn’t come to apologize only made that feeling worse.

’Strange... she should have come to apologize by now.’

"Maybe I should check on her..."

He was about to move when a knock came from the door.

"What is it?"

"The tenth vein requests yours and the lady’s presence, my lord."

Mamush’s expression immediately soured. ’What the hell does that demon spawn want with me now?’

Still, he knew better than to keep a child of the Demon pulse waiting.

"Fine. Tell her we’re coming."

Some time later, Mamush sat at the dining table with his wife, Onilia, beside him.

Across from them sat a tense Renlo and... Octavia.

The tenth vein was glaring at Mamush like he had personally offended her, her eyes practically boring holes into him.

Renlo had no idea what the man had done to earn such intense hostility, but looking at him now, he almost felt sorry for him.

After several long moments of uncomfortable silence, Mamush finally forced a smile.

"Tenth vein... may I ask why you summoned us?"

A moment later, his wife added, "Has something in the mansion displeased you? Whatever it is, please tell us. We’ll have it corrected immediately."

Onilia’s poker face was considerably better than her husband’s, but even she seemed slightly uncomfortable beneath Octavia’s unwavering glare.

Eventually, after several more agonizing seconds, Octavia finally spoke.

"Mamush... why the hell are you so fat?"

The atmosphere in the dining hall instantly froze.

Even the expressions of the guards and maids standing around the room stiffened, while Mamush’s face slowly darkened.

Renlo could only stare at the frowning Octavia in horror.

’What the hell!? How is this a distraction!?’
