"I-I’m sorry! Please wait a moment!" the front desk lady said and quickly grabbed her stamp.

[You have received the Bronze mission to clear the farmland of the invasive Goblins.]

"Yeah, that’s what I thought," Kaelen said to her as he grabbed the stamped mission flyer and walked out of the building.

He hadn’t taken a few steps when he immediately noticed something was off.

The once-busy streets had thinned down to only a few people, and he could see the players among them rushing for their motels or wherever their save points were in the city.

This made him confused.

The only thing that would make players mass log out like this was if something was happening in real life. Something dire.

This made him want to leave the game as well to check the forums for the latest news.

He navigated his way to the nearest motel on the block. But unlike the other players, Kaelen wasn’t doing this to have a safe spawning point in-game.

It was simply because his human disguise was an attribute skill and would be deactivated the second he left the game, which would make him spawn the next time he entered the game as a Slime.

"Good day, sir. How may I—"

Thwink!

He flipped a gold coin onto the front desk before the receptionist could finish. "I need a room."

"Y-Yes, of course."

The receptionist grabbed a room key and carefully handed it to him. She quickly lowered her head to grab his change, but when she looked up again, the man had disappeared.

Kaelen pushed his pod open and stepped out of it to grab his phone, when a dark shadow flashed by his floor-to-ceiling window. He paused to stare at the window for a long while, wondering if his eyes had been playing tricks on him.

His mansion was three floors tall, and his bedroom was on the top floor, which made it highly unlikely that it was a person, and neither could it be a bird—because those didn’t exist anymore inside the strongholds.

He decided to activate his [Sharp Senses] just as a safety measure, when a large object suddenly slammed into the window from the corner. Its sudden movement and speed were capable of giving anyone a jump scare, except Kaelen, who didn’t flinch one bit as he stared at the beast thrashing against the window, trying to break the reinforced glass.

"What the hell is that?" he asked with a frown as he moved closer to inspect the rabid winged beast.

It was unlike anything he had seen before, and Kaelen would’ve loved to observe it further... but it was clearly scratching the expensive glass.

Spark—

A loud snapping sound and a spark in the dark were all it took to make the beast turn rigid and disintegrate into ash.

That was when Kaelen saw it. More of these beasts, ruling the sky and plunging down into the stronghold.

That was when he realized what was happening, and his pupils contracted.

"A beast wave?"

The last beast wave had been three decades ago, even before they gave birth to Kaelen. Long before the first awakener appeared.

It was the beginning of the apocalypse and devastated civilization, leading to the rise of the nine strongholds after humanity’s strongest stepped forward to reclaim it. And it was happening again.

He quickly stepped out onto the balcony and crouched slightly before the air exploded beneath his bare feet, and he soared into the sky as he activated the Reaping Angel’s Wings.

He appeared above the middle of the city, but was relieved to see it was only winged beasts that had breached the Stronghold’s great walls.

But beyond those walls was a great number of all kinds of beasts charging toward the stronghold. The slums had already suffered heavy casualties, and it was only now that the city had mobilized its forces to line the walls and blast the horde with everything they had.

Their efforts were effective in pushing the beasts away from anywhere close to the walls, including the slums, but the damage there was unsalvageable.

Seeing all this made Kaelen’s blood run cold.

Not because of the great number of beasts, but because he’d been living in those slums with no hope for a future barely two months ago.

Without the 10,000× Reward System...

His mind trailed off as he stared at the ruins where his shack once stood.

He was once again reminded why strength was all that mattered, and would ever matter.

Those slums could be the stronghold tomorrow when faced with a greater calamity.

In fact, Kaelen had the premonition that this would soon become reality. And when that time came, the only person who could save him... was himself.

A figure appeared behind Kaelen at that moment. He didn’t need to turn, as he could already tell from the aura that it was President Hunter.

"I’m afraid the time of peace is over. The second wave has begun. But this time around, we will fight back without mercy to reclaim our pride." As he said this, he turned to look at the scene unfolding inside the stronghold.

Kaelen looked down as well, to see a one-sided battle taking place. He’d almost forgotten the stronghold was home to awakeners, and was impressed as more of them trooped out of their homes after logging out of the game, jumping straight into battle like they’d done this one too many times.

He could even see some live-streaming the battle and making fun of the entire situation. But Kaelen knew it was because they greatly outnumbered the winged beasts and were forgetting this was the same event they were told had wiped out sixty percent of humanity in the first few days.

Kaelen was certain this was only the beginning of a much greater war, and the earlier they began taking it seriously, the better it would be for them.

At that moment, a sharp light suddenly caught Kaelen’s attention. It was almost like the reflection off the scope of a sniper rifle. But it was gone almost immediately before Kaelen could get a good look, and when he did, he immediately frowned.

Because the direction it came from was farther into the wasteland than his eyes could see, or his [Sharp Senses] could reach.

"What the hell was that?" he mumbled to himself.

Meanwhile, far away in the wasteland, in the ruins of an abandoned skyscraper, a beautiful white-haired woman crouched behind a futuristic sniper rifle suddenly pulled it back and took cover behind a wall.

"Don’t tell me someone saw you from this distance." An alluring voice came from the shadows as another woman appeared inside the building.

The white-haired woman remained silent as the face of the man in the sky flashed across her mind.

’How did he see that?’ she mused to herself with a slight frown. ’That was too careless of me.’

"We’ve successfully triggered the beast horde toward Stronghold 5. Our mission here is over," she said to the other woman as her sniper rifle disintegrated into light particles.

Her ally didn’t say a word as she turned around and opened a portal in midair, and they both stepped into it as the portal closed behind them, leaving no trace that anyone had been in the abandoned building.
