Chapter 63: Stories Are Only Meant to Enrich Our Lives, Not Replace Them

Out of curiosity, Su Xiaoran couldn’t help but take a look while Lin Haoren was kneading the dough.

She knew it was inappropriate to look into someone’s privacy without permission, but she wanted to know more about Lin Haoren.

As such, she decided to just take a quick look.

However, the moment she started reading the document, she couldn’t stop.

The story was too interesting and written even more beautifully despite its simplicity. It easily captured her attention with minimal words.

A whole new world was perfectly crafted in a simple and concise language.

No heavy description was required to provoke such rich imagination, and the words saved from that allowed the story to flow smoothly and continuously. The pacing was good.

Even if Su Xiaoran wasn’t an expert, she could tell this level of writing required solid skill.

The story was good, and the writer was even better.

Unfortunately, it was too short.

Su Xiaoran finished reading to the end of the document before she realized it.

Oh, no...

What did she do? Wasn’t she only planning to take a quick look? How did she end up reading everything? Was it too late to ask for permission now?

"Brother Lin, are you writing a story? Can I read it?" Su Xiaoran asked with a guilty conscience.

Lin Haoren smiled amusingly and casually said, "Go for it. The rest of the story can be found on Origin Literature, under the pen name Brightest Star Under Heaven."

"Pfttt! This name is so grandiose and boastful," Su Xiaoran laughed and said, "I definitely have to check it out."

Su Xiaoran quickly opened up the Origin Literature page and found the novel under Lin Haoren’s pen name.

She was surprised by the statistics.

Birth of the Demonic Saint was a new novel, but it was already receiving a lot of traction.

At the very least, the number of views seemed heavily inflated compared to the number of available Chapters on the platform.

However, the collections were keeping up.

Moreover, the story was receiving a lot of votes. Thus, it was undeniably popular.

The story’s genre wasn’t her cup of tea, but even she found it to be an enjoyable read. Unexpectedly, Lin Haoren was so skilled at writing.

No wonder he could provide such an in-depth script analysis. He was utilizing his knowledge from both acting and writing.

Su Xiaoran wondered whether Lin Haoren’s novels would ever get adapted, and if she would have the opportunity to participate in their production.

"Brother Lin, why do you think authors write stories?" Su Xiaoran asked.

"Oh?"

Lin Haoren was surprised by the sudden question, but he quickly recovered and contemplated for a moment.

"There isn’t a single answer to this. Each author has different motivations for writing."

"Then, what is your answer, Brother Lin?"

"Mine? Hmm, I have two answers. Which one do you want to hear first? The boring one? Or the meaningful one?"

"What’s the boring answer?"

"The boring answer is, of course, for money. If there’s no money to be earned, who would want to do such a thankless task?"

"It’s fine if you possess genuine skill, but if you don’t, you will spend countless hours wracking your brains—only to be scolded online."

"The only real benefit that is true for all writers is the convenience of flexible work hours and location," Lin Haoren believed.

Of course, there was also the benefit of working alone.

There was no boss to work him like a donkey or steal his credits. He also didn’t have to put on a fake smile to please his superiors.

Su Xiaoran was tickled by Lin Haoren’s honest yet amusing answer.

Isn’t that the truth for everyone?

If there was no money to be earned, who would willingly go to work?

"What about the meaningful answer?" Su Xiaoran smiled.

"The meaningful one, huh? I suppose I had a bit of an escapist, dreamer, and visionary mentality. I write stories to escape the mundane, boring reality and its limitations, and explore more interesting aspects of life that I can’t normally experience."

"The world is clearly big, but my world is very small. Time, money, effort, energy, responsibilities, or even technology—Many limitations are restricting us from doing everything we want in life. We can only pick a few among the many."

"However, these restrictions don’t really exist in stories; I can craft a world or many worlds to my liking," Lin Haoren said.

Su Xiaoran thought about how many years she had spent confined to Jinhai City and couldn’t help but acknowledge that the worlds within stories were more interesting.

Who knows when she could travel to every other part of the world?

As a reader, she didn’t need to go anywhere physically, yet her mind could explore all kinds of places.

As a human, one lifetime was too short, yet in the world of books, she could also experience many different kinds of life.

"Brother Lin, listening to you speak, I suddenly feel like reality isn’t as interesting as the world within stories," Su Xiaoran said.

"The world within stories is certainly interesting, but we shouldn’t be blinded by their beautiful brilliance and lose track of what truly matters," Lin Haoren casually said.

"After all, the world within stories is mostly made up; they aren’t real, and most situations in the stories aren’t necessarily a true reflection of real life. They are only possibilities."

"Stories are only meant to enrich our lives, not replace them. As they say, it’s better to walk a thousand miles than to read a thousand books."

"Perhaps the possibilities that could only exist in books are actually waiting for us to discover in reality," Lin Haoren said with a thoughtful smile.

"Beef noodles are ready," he suddenly added.

"Ooh!"

Su Xiaoran’s excitement surged, and everything Lin Haoren had said was quickly forgotten. Only food filled her mind.

She put the laptop aside and rushed to the dining table after washing her hands.

Lin Haoren saw everything and shook his head with a soft chuckle as he brought the two bowls of homemade beef noodles to the table.

The values in books were quite boring when preached by others.

"Smells so good!"

Su Xiaoran greedily sniffed the appetizing aroma wafting from her bowl of beef noodles and couldn’t help but drool.

She was surprised by the moisture at the corner of her mouth and wiped it away in embarrassment. Still, her gaze remained fixed on her bowl of beef noodles expectantly.

"What are you waiting for? Dig in," Lin Haoren laughed, but his gaze remained gentle.
